*****Official Cubs 2023 thread*****

Shouldn’t really be surprising. Coming back from TJ is no joke. He hasn’t pitched in the bigs since Sept. 2021 and while his getting back to action was actually ahead of schedule, it takes time to get all that feel back. Many guys have come back from TJ and been anywhere from OK to solid and then get fully back that next season.
I agree that we won't know the full extent of Heuer's recovery until about Memorial Day 2024. Anything he can give to the big league club this season is a bonus.

Also, there’s a reason why MLB has set rules on rehab assignment length (can’t just bury a guy in rehab to save roster spots) but also has an exception process for TJ recovery.

Any of you minor league fanatics know what the deal is with Cade Horton today? He has pitched on Wednesday literally every week this season, the South Bend Cubs are finally in Cedar Rapids....and their starting pitcher is listed as TBD????

Edit - Devers listed as starter today. Hope nothing is wrong with CH...

Hopefully Cade pitches the next game and you get to see him. Devers I think is just coming off injury, and has put up fantastic numbers in the minors but not many people believe in the stuff translating to the bigs. Great changeup and pitchability that is too good for A ball hitters (probbaly most of the minor leagues).

Definitely give us a report if you make it to any of the games...

MLB.tv running a Father's Day special, all teams for $60. I broke down and got it. Stanley Cup is over and I can now split my attention between baseball and golf.

Something I am really looking forward to is listening to minor league games while on the golf course with the First Pitch app. Not even sure you need an MLB.tv subscription for that as I had to create a whole new account and never had to link anything or pay a subscription. So probably could have been doing that all along.

Need to find some sweet minor league radio call like in the movie Bull Durham. Some slow, southern drawl that oozes the lazy attitude of listening to a ballgame over the radio on a hot summer night.

The guy working home tonight sucks, but am baffled that the Cub hitters can't seem to figure out Bido is pounding the middle of the plate with fastballs on his first pitch.

It's Marvin Hudson behind the plate, and he's sucking ass. Just terrible.
GO CUBS!! Tauchmann and Happ fueling a rally.

Seriously, am I the only one seeing how bad Hudson is behind the plate tonight?

I've only been watching for an inning, but that "strike" to Mancini that was a couple inches outside is about as bad as it gets.

The Pirates had a really good bullpen prior to this series.

EDIT: They said during the game tonight that Pittsburgh came into the series with the 3rd best team bullpen ERA in the NL and after the first 2 games of the series they had dropped to 10th in the NL, and then we saw what happened tonight in game 3. And, that begs the question:

When did the Cubs and Pirates swap bullpens?😉

Prior to tonight, the Pirates had a team BP ERA of about 21 in the first 2 games of this series. Who'd-a-thunk it?

I think the Cubs also want to carefully manage Cade’s workload. He threw 53 innings in college TOTAL. He’s already thrown 34 innings. Was listening to Greg Huss & Bryan Smith on the Cubs on Deck podcast and this week they talked a lot about Cade and how there may be an inning cap this year considering he’s coming back from major arm surgery and needs to stretch out. We’ll see. I’ve seen nothing about any injury or setback, probably just an opportunity to space his work out a little more.

As he was rounding 3rd I was saying a prayer to the patron saint of hamstrings that he wouldn't pull one.
Watching Nico go from 1st to home full speed was one of the big highlights of the game.

Sure would be nice to see this team go on a run. Like the post above pointed out, the NLC is wide open with no, dominant team. Why not the Cubs? Offense showing some life. If Steele comes back full strength, Taillon continues to figure it out, and our BP find some kind of identity, they certainly could push for a >.500 record this year, which may be all it takes challenge in the NLC.

Anything is possible. The 1973 Mets won the entire NL East Division with an 82-79 record, won the NL playoffs by beating the Reds who won the West with a 99-63 record, and then took the Oakland A's to 7 games in the WS.

I hope if this happens it doesn't take too much of Mervis' playing time away from him. He's not going to develop sitting on the bench. Rizzo really struggled when he first came up too when he was with SD.

BTW, I saw yesterday or the day before that Mancini is 5th in the NL All Star voting for 1B.
Mervis and Wisdom are competing for that call into the manager's office to be given their vacation in Des Moines.

I'm betting it will be Mervis, since Wisdom has a lot more Major League experience, can play 3B and is basically the only fairly consistent power the team has at this point other than Morel.

I like the idea of Bellinger at 1B most days while his knee completely heals and Mervis continues to develop at AAA, as long as Tauchman continues to earn playing time.

I’m actually liking what Mervis is doing at the plate. He’s getting a lot of hard contact and he’s looking silly less often. I think he’s actually making progress on adjusting to the nasty stuff he just won’t see in AAA. That oppo shot he hit almost to the wall yesterday (for an out) was a really good piece of hitting and a good example of him staying on a tough pitch and driving it.

Yeah, I don't expect the Cubs to be the '73 Mets, '87 Twins or '06 Cardinals, but I'd kinda like to see them still in the hunt for the postseason at Labor Day.

The Brewers are in free fall, the Pirates are ripe to be taken, the Reds aren't that good, and the Cardinals appear to be a dysfunctional bag of poop.

Agreed, but if the plan is to put Bellinger at 1B, even if it's only for a week or so, Mervis should go down and get his ABs.

I think it's just more of a numbers deal. Minors are almost always off on Monday, so you have six starts the rest of the week, and South Bend has 15 active pitchers on their roster, and some of that will get worse as guys get moved around the system and guys are promoted. A bit of a new problem after baseball cut a whole layer of teams. As mentioned by @hawkifann you probably have load management issues at work, too. You have to get all those guys work. Devers, who you mentioned, just came back from the IL. He was a break out pitcher last year, but needs to be carefully folded back in. The Cubs also a lot of piggyback starts, so one start a week isn't shocking. It's really about getting in set work.
A lot of people think Horton should be pushed to AA this year, but my amateur opinion is they will artificially limit him to about 100 innings, then send him to Arizona to work on mechanics and physical conditioning.
