*****Official Cubs 2023 thread*****

I think it's just more of a numbers deal. Minors are almost always off on Monday, so you have six starts the rest of the week, and South Bend has 15 active pitchers on their roster, and some of that will get worse as guys get moved around the system and guys are promoted. A bit of a new problem after baseball cut a whole layer of teams. As mentioned by @hawkifann you probably have load management issues at work, too. You have to get all those guys work. Devers, who you mentioned, just came back from the IL. He was a break out pitcher last year, but needs to be carefully folded back in. The Cubs also a lot of piggyback starts, so one start a week isn't shocking. It's really about getting in set work.
A lot of people think Horton should be pushed to AA this year, but my amateur opinion is they will artificially limit him to about 100 innings, then send him to Arizona to work on mechanics and physical conditioning.
Horton listed as starter tonight. Looks like he just got bumped one day to make room for Devers.

Who gets optioned when Steele is re-activated tomorrow?

Both Wes and Assad looked like garbage last time out. Since Assad at least has the experience of pitching multiple innings out of the pen (which might be required for Steele's first start back), it makes sense for Wes to go back to Iowa and work on his consistency.

Then again, with only 12 pitchers on the active roster, maybe a position player gets sent back down. Mastrobuoni makes the most sense in this case (he was optioned just 7 days ago and was only able to be recalled because of an injury).

I would imagine Mastrobuoni, but there’s a case to be made for Patrick Wisdom, who can still be optioned. I think it’ll definitely be a position player to get back to a 13-man staff with Wesneski going to the bullpen, where I think he could have an impact.

I just finished interviewing Alex Cohen, voice of the I-Cubs for the episode I’ll drop this afternoon, we spent about an hour talking about life on the fringes of the bigs and he had a lot of interesting things to say. One thing he did talk about is that he thinks Keegan is starting to turn the corner and that he could be an absolute impact arm to the Cubs bullpen in the 2nd half.

Thanks for this post about the interview and especially great to hear the part about Keegan!

Not mad about today's loss - it felt different. I didn't feel like the Cubs blew anything, they just got beat one of three by a very good team. On to Pittsburgh!

Myrtle Beach won, giving them the first half championship in their league. I’m confident the big league club is on the right track, just a matter of getting the moves the next year right. Signing Stroman, flipping a few guys, make landing a two way whale in the off-season

Have you caught any of their games on Marquee? Seems like MB gets a lot of airtime. In my opinion they are the least talented of the teams below the AAA level. Solid pitching, but not the brightest of offensive talent. Hernandez at SS, and that plump little catcher seem to be it. A couple of one tool guys (Power), to fill out the roster.

I mean, really, low A should be the least talented, but so many guys have moved up past low A the past couple of years. A few guys worth watching:
  • Jackson Ferris - last year’s #2 draft pick as an overslot
  • Drew Gray - coming back from a major arm injury who could quickly become a top 30 prospect
  • Moises Ballesteros - the ”plump little catcher”. Projects well offensively, though maybe not at C
  • Hernandez
  • Reggie Preciado - another piece of the return for Yu Darvish
  • Jefferson Rojas - hitting the crap out of the ball right now

Meh, talent is talent. It has to be developed at each level. The thing working against MB this year is they've already pushed a lot of good players up to SB and TN, and they haven't filled in as well with guys down in Arizona.

And now it sounds like Ballesteros is moving up.
