*****Official Cubs 2023 thread*****

I hate how baseball figures who gets the win when pitching. Hendricks pitched great for 6 innings and ends up with a no-decision because Merriweather let's up a couple runs to tie it. Then the Cubs score 5 and Merriweather gets the win. Have never liked how that happens.
That’s why they called Phil Regan, “The Vulture”.

You think it's weird that many Cubs fans would prefer owners who are focused on putting a consistent contender on the field instead of being frugal and focusing on right wing politics or amassing Wrigleyville real estate or buying european soccer teams? OK

I find justifying the long, in house approach to the bullpen in a post and then immediately turning around and crying about said bullpen weird but whatever
The best models are really the Astros and Dodgers. If you’re going to carry star power, it really helps if your bench, bullpen, several positions and maybe the back end of your rotation are filled by home-grown players that haven’t hit free agency yet. Then you can use the financial firepower to pay stars and other quality vets to fill gaps.

The Cubs have both spent enough to win 2015-2020 and 2023, but also should spend more.

Link to my "crying" about Alzolay, Palencia, Leiter, Rucker, Hughes, Assad, Estrada, Roberts or other bullpen arms that are either home-grown or played a majority of their career on the Cubs and are either on the active roster or look to potentially be a big part of the future? TIA

Yeah, politically-fueled rants about team ownership is weird. There are tons of fans of MLB teams out there who either don't like their team's owners or really don't care. You shouldn't let it affect you so much.

Stroman has not been on tonight, but Wisdom has single handedly (well, no handedly looking at his defense) ****ed this games for the Cubs tonight.

Why are you still here? I thought this team broke you around the 4th. What the hell do those teams have to do with the cubs who are on year 8 of rebuild in 14 seasons of Ricketts ownership? Those teams are consistently good. Anyone can slash and burn every 5-6 years and save on payroll while their fans wait years for it to come together, it's lazy as shit.

Yes, you don't have to be a top spending team to win but the cubs aren't one of those teams. If you're going to try to say they were genuinely trying to contend anymore than a small window of these 14 seasons you are delusional

We aren't talking any owners...the Ricketts are the most political sports family in sports as far as I know. Pete is gov of a deep red state and Todd was the finance chair of the Trump Victory committee. They had fund raisers for Trump at Wrigley and so while cubs fans waited their whole lives for a world series we got less than a week to enjoy it before the Ricketts helped deliver the Trump presidency. Keep in mind they own a team in CHICAGO, not Kansas City or Texas.

Maybe you don't have a problem that the patriarch who sold his shares to buy the team is a blatant bigot or how the kids told him that Cubs fans would pay premium prices no matter the quality of the product on field to get him on board....right before they told the fans that they were fans too. Many do care

Maybe kicking out common fans who had been season ticket holders for decades so they could create high dollar club areas or moving the disabled fans to areas where the view was so bad they installed tv screens for them is no big deal to you. It is to many Cubs fans. It's a disgusting family who despite delivering a ring is hated by many Chicagoans. And it's not like their tenure has been much better other than a very small window.

Its would be a lot easier to turn a blind eye to their character flaws if they were winning but they haven't won a playoff game since 2017. 18 and 20 postseasons were so pathetic they don't really count, This is not the bill of goods we were sold in 2009, I'd rather have owners who genuinely want to win for themselves and the fans, not just count their money from gullible fans who keep showing up no matter what. They aren't fooling anyone

And no, you weren't complaining about the guys coming up as I wasn't either when you felt the need to cubsplain the long, in house approach to pen. You were complaining about Fulmer. All I wanted was 1 or 2 proven guys at end of pen to make meaningful games in aug and sept this season possible. Definitely don't have that

End of rant. I'm ready for football

Orlando Magic owners may be more political than the Ricketts.

I’m here because I still like to watch the games and talk about the Cubs, I love baseball.

The Astros and Dodgers are absolutely the models, especially the Dodgers as a comp for the Cubs. They SHOULD be spending more money. They also should not have done 2 complete tear downs in 10 years. There are things to like that they’ve implemented over the last 2-3 years, so I hope this is the last time we’re here. Jed’s stated goal is building something sustainable…and his leash has to be getting shorter by the month.

Currently listening to Dallas sports radio...Rangers need pitching, but the hosts aren't all that high on Stroman. Paraphrasing, he had three great months and currently in one bad month. On the opposite side, I see the Rays are interested in Stroman and they have some major league-ready talent that would help the Cubs in return.

I'm watching of 720pstream, pop up ads suck though

Cards about to take lead
I've got Matt Spiegel on the call with Elise Minaker doing color work via my MLB app. Pat Hughes and all star Ron Coomer are in Cooperstown this weekend.

Spiegel stinks.
I think he is being humbled a little by the experience, and hopefully learning to be less critical of athletes who fail. Talking on the radio for several hours isn't the same as calling a ballgame on the radio. That's why it's so special to see Hughes go into the HOF this weekend. He's one of the best in the business at calling a game.

Hughes is awesome, except for his home run call...."Its got a chaaaaaaaaance. gone"

Mastrobuoni has started to hit, which is a good thing. Can he stick when Madrigal and Swanson come back?
Good question...Obviously Jared Young should go back down when they get back, but after that it gets a little tougher as far as who to send out if not Mastrobuoni.

I figure it will be either Mastro or Wisdom, whoever is the hottest stays. Mastro is definitely more versatile in the field, but he has to continue to hit.

Now, watch it be Amaya.............. :(
