*****Official Cubs 2023 thread*****

Finally above .500 since the AS break. At this rate we will be at .500 about Labor Day...

MLB Network had a rather long discussion on Bellinger last nite.

They really think the Cubs can get "a haul" at the deadline moving him.
Heard someone on the radio say that Houston’s offer for Bellinger could start with Bielak and Drew Gilbert, their top prospect.

I think Gilbert was their #1 pick last year but his MLB ETA is 2025. He's 22 now and hitting about .230 in AA after hitting about .360 in High A with about 100 PAs early this year. The problem as I see it is he is an outfielder, which we probably don't need at this time. He's listed at 5'-9" and seems to be showing about average power in the minors so far.

I would like to see what the Cubs might be able to get with a Stroman and Bellinger package.

I have said before, if they trade Bellinger and/or Stroman I want major league ready talent in return. The Cubs are done collecting A or AA players and they need to address 3B, 1B and pitching on the major league roster.

Texas has couple guys, Owen White and Brock Porter. I’m not sure they would deal either, but Stroman and Belly would, at least be of equal value

But teams trading for help at the deadline will never give up current major league talent.

Without researching, I can't think of anyone that's done it recently.
The Cubs would be fools not to trade Bellinger.

Fun game so far. I need to start watching more baseball... rule changes have really made the game so much more enjoyable.
I like some things, some I don't. I wish they'd tinker a little with the pitch clock. There is a little too much discretion for the umpire on violations. I have enjoyed the increase in steal attempts, but the limit on throws to first is artificial.

Gritty win today. I didn't get to watch much of it, unfortunately.
I'm becoming a big fan of Alzolay as the closer. I know it isn't a trendy stat to follow, but he's got the attitude you need in a closer.

Major league ready, could be a top 50 guy blocked with his current team

Tyler Mahle for Spencer Steer and CES, both needed an opportunity and so far that trade is working out well for the Reds.

Texas is focused on pitching, their biggest need is getting bullpen help and possibly another starter. Tampa has some guys that could help at 1B/3B and Baltimore has two 3B prospects if they want to get some pitching.

I was looking at the Rays, they have an Aussie 3B and another decent first base prospect

Mead hasn’t had the year they were expecting but he’s still highly regarded. Manzardo is good 1B prospect and Caminero is the best of the bunch and is most likely untouchable. Aranda just needs an opportunity and is a bit older but has put up good numbers. All, except Manzardo, could play 3B. The guy I like the most is Coby Mayo in Baltimore, but doubt they want to move him.

Had to listen to this clown do play by play the last two days. He's horrible. Can't wait for Pat to get back. The woman wasn't bad but he's absolutely horrible at play by play.
I would love to see AAA play-by-play guys get an opportunity to fill in on occasions like this. Give guys who actually do this for a living an opportunity.

One more biscuit for breakfast, and that one would have been out of here.
Bellinger just missed a grand slam.

I can see them trading Stroman and keeping Bellinger. Wesneskie and Brown can fill in for the rest of the season. And, it isn’t a total white flag. Just speculation, but the front office may value the compensatory pick they’d get for Bellinger when he walks in the offseason more than a prospect.

It’s definitely going to be an interesting week! If they go 1-5 or 5-1 these decisions get easier. I agree that losing Stro won’t hurt 2nd half chances as much as losing Belli, but with the way Belli is hitting someone might make an offer Jed can’t refuse

I just read an article that Shaw who was drafted by the Cubs this year might be thrown to 3rd base but projects as a mid 2024 MLB prospect to join the big league team. All based on his bat.

Not sure if I believe that but we'll see.

Matt Shaw?

I can’t believe the Cubs would trade Bellinger and keep Happ and Suzuki.
Nothing to do with which players are better and everything to do with contracts.

I am tired of the Cubs selling every year. Ever notice how the players performing the best and are always in trade talks are always guys on one year/last year of their contract? Like clockwork. I knew Belli would have a great bounce back year as a Cub. Also note how the Cubs seem to have no shot at resigning these players either so we "have to" deal them? Frankly, it's probably for the best as Belli's production will probably crater next year anyway after he secures a nice, comfortable contract. This is a perfect example of buying high. Soak whichever team wants him in a trade for every top prospect they have.

So if the Cubs need to deal guys, go ahead. I'm just patiently waiting for the day when the organization has these contracts layered so that they can bring guys up out of the minors in stair step fashion, constantly replenish the team year over year, and supplement by signing a FA here and there to fill in the gaps. The boom/bust rebuilding every 7-8 year model is getting really, really old.

Happ & Suzuki aren’t rentals, as they’re each under contract for 3 more years after this one. Additionally, both have no-trade clauses in their contracts.

I’d prefer to just not be a major seller this year. I’d also bring Bellinger and Stroman back next year. Either one or both may want to actually hit the market to see what other offers are out there, but I think both would be really open to re-signing with the Cubs. As for Bellinger, he’s healthy and you can see changes in his swing. No guarantees he doesn’t fall off again, but he’s only 28, so it’s not like he’s a guy about to start fading with age.

A bad July and that player option will hinder what the Cubs get in return if they want to trade Stroman. From everything I’ve heard, there is little-to-no doubt Bellinger is going to free agency, and why wouldn’t he?

I like Belli but I'd prefer we trade him for a reliable SP and 1B

I was going to say that $19.99 per month was high priced but the MLB.tv single team price is $130 for the season and the all team package is $150. So it is high priced compared to the league package but not that far off the MLB single team option, 6 months = $120.

Why not go for it this year? Sometimes it isn’t that you’re good, it’s that the other guys stink. Reds and brews stink and are bound to fail imo.

Get to .500, hang around and let the other teams fall apart. Then we have a decent 1-2-3 for the playoffs in Steele, Stro snd Kyle H.

Also, why not Morel at 3b? Get Candelario for 3rd if they refuse to give him a chance.

He's a high level bat, but 3B might take more time. His arm isn't the greatest. But, there are some things they could work on, I suppose. I've seen more stuff that he looks like he'd stick at 2B. Unfortunately the Cubs have a pile of prospects at 2B that they need to move to other positions or maybe flip.

Yeah, it was purely speculation but I suppose it makes sense with Hoerner at 2b and a bat upgrade over Wisdom and Madrigal at 3b.

He already knows that. He just wants to make sure everyone in this thread knows that he's an armchair GM douche-nozzle who thinks that all you need to do is trade all your players who aren't performing at a hall-of-fame level and replace them with players who certainly will...

You're only getting prospects. Maybe ones that pan out or that can be flipped for those spots.
Cubs wouldn't get just A-level prospects for Bellinger. If he gets traded, the Cubs will demand MLB-ready talent. There are a lot of players stuck in the minors who just haven't gotten their shot yet, playing for an organization with a loaded MLB roster. The Cubs would pick up at least one player ready to contribute immediately.
