*****Official Cubs 2023 thread*****

Uhhhh, why is Michael Fulmer starting tomorrow? Only Steele was listed as a starter for this series per the BN write up, so before today's game the Cubs new there was a hole in the rotation. Fulmer gives you what, 2 innings?

Maybe the Cubs are hoping his right arm falls off so they can negotiate a release without having to pay his full salary…

I wish I could watch the game. F*** MLB, and the Ricketts family for putting this on Apple after telling me I needed Marquee.
It's not Ricketts - MLB made this arrangement and Apple gets to pick a set number of games. Like if they were on Fox or ESPN.

F change.
I do wonder a bit if someday we'll have an actual MLB network with MLB network talent calling the games? Just the local staff calling the games, and no team affiliated broadcasters?

Just came about this article

As a "cord-cutter" and someone who tried Fubo and ****ing hated it, this is big news. Currently I have an MLB.TV sub, along with a VPN pretending I'm in Uruguay to be able to stream a Cubs game in Des Moines.

I think the impending demise of the RSNs will lead to something probably much more cohesive.

Orlando Magic owners may be more political than the Ricketts.
Maybe ballpark but one guy doesn't equal an entire family, one of which is governor and another a finance chair. Its a lot more appropriate being an active republican in FL than Chicago obviously.

I don't even know what the political affiliations are of my other teams, I can assume but nobody flaunts it like the Ricketts

Are only like minded people allowed in Chicago

I think he is being humbled a little by the experience, and hopefully learning to be less critical of athletes who fail. Talking on the radio for several hours isn't the same as calling a ballgame on the radio. That's why it's so special to see Hughes go into the HOF this weekend. He's one of the best in the business at calling a game.
What makes you think he’s being humbled? I’ve listened to that guy for a long time and humble doesn’t really come to mind, especially when talking baseball. Believe me, I understand filling in is super hard, I filled in for two weeks at the ol KJOC in the QCs doing three hour shifts and it was difficult and I was not very good at it. Just never been a fan of his and his Cubs opportunity has only inflated the ego.

I’m here because I still like to watch the games and talk about the Cubs, I love baseball.

The Astros and Dodgers are absolutely the models, especially the Dodgers as a comp for the Cubs. They SHOULD be spending more money. They also should not have done 2 complete tear downs in 10 years. There are things to like that they’ve implemented over the last 2-3 years, so I hope this is the last time we’re here. Jed’s stated goal is building something sustainable…and his leash has to be getting shorter by the month.
I was just giving you shit, the "broke me" line was a little dramatic. Maybe those two teams are the models but they are falling flat on their face if thats who they are trying to emulate. As a lifer Iowa and Cubs fan I'm admittedly sensitive about the loyalty of fanbase being exploited and those leaked emails definitely indicated winning wasn't the top propriety

There's definitely things to be optimistic about but its been awhile since it has felt like they were really trying to win a pennant. 3 division titles in 13 (likely 14) seasons when you are the only big market team in an extremely winnable division isn't cutting it, especially when 1 was the covid yr. They won 3 in the 7 years before Ricketts took over and that was when there were 6 teams in the division.

I hope things change soon, as I've said before if you've made it the most expensive gameday in MLB for the fans you need to spend accordingly

I was there with Travis Fox and Scott Daly

Only an idiot would come up with that based on my posts but even you should be able to understand that doing things to piss off a vast majority of your local fanbase isn't wise, especially when you're not winning. Helping to elect a vile human who has done huge damage to the country is doing just that.

You seem to be fine with blatant bigotry but when the guy who puts up the money to buy a team is a known bigot its a big problem in a diverse city like Chicago. We aren't talking shithole Clarinda here. I assume Jerry Reinsdorf is a R but he doesn't advertise it like the Ricketts.

Do you think the majority of Cub fans live in Chicago?

I seriously can't tell if you're a troll or just this dense but I'd venture to guess that a majority of the people who spend big money on season tickets and those who go regularly to games do live in the area, yes.

You don't seem to know shit about business but being overly political either way just isn't wise when dealing with a broad base of customers. Coming from a guy who has called espn woke i thought you might be able to grasp that concept but I guess not. They had their worst attendance since the 90s last yr and they've had plenty of worse seasons in that time

We are talking about owners who cried poor and talked about "biblical losses" during covid, completely slashed payroll a year later, and then less than a year later were trying to buy Chelsea FC for billions.

They've had the money to buy up wrigleyville and turn Wrigley into a Cubs themed amusement park designed to extract every penny they can from fans. If that doesn't raise eyebrows for you then fine, I'm just not so gullible when it comes to greedy billionaires.

All I said was I wish we had owners focused on the team, not politics or real estate or European soccer. If you have a problem with that I seriously question if you're a real cubs fan or a bandwagoner who jumped on board 7 years ago. JFC

Been a Cubs fan since the early 80s, watched Ron Cey, Jody Davis, Jamie Moyer… Paul Noce filled in for Sandberg. Do I wish the Ricketts spent more on the team? You bet. I think they spent a ton on renovating the area, Covid hit and it threw a huge monkey wrench in the plans. There were some bad trades and contracts too. I just don’t think the politics keeps Cubs fans away. No matter who you support, you puss off some other segment of the community. Separate the Ricketts actions as Cub owners from their politics, or don’t, but the politics don’t have an effect on the wins and losses

I listened to a little bit of Bruce Levine on the Score this morning and he suggested that starting Fulmer may be part audition, and part plan for what happens after the trade deadline. Fulmer might want to start some games if he isn't dealt to prove he can return to that role as he is a FA this offseason.

MLB Network had a rather long discussion on Bellinger last nite.

They really think the Cubs can get "a haul" at the deadline moving him.

They both have no trade clauses and the Cubs are not eating 130M on guys who can play.
The Cubs will be DFA on Suzuki before the 2025 season. They massively overpaid Happ as a fourth outfielder. The best case scenario is that PCA, Caissie and others out perform those two in the next three seasons. It wouldn’t be hard to do with Suzuki because he’s a bum.
