*****Official Cubs 2023 thread*****

It’s a good point on Assad, as I think he can only go down one more time, after that he would have to clear waivers and he wouldn’t.
Now the Cubs are in a bind with Miles - it’s the 4th time he‘s been optioned, so if he comes back up again, he’ll have to stay on the ML roster or else the Cubs will have to put him through waivers and I’d be really surprised if he cleared.
Just to clarify - Assad has been optioned 3 times and Mastro now 4 times. I thought the rule was that a player could be optioned 5 times per option season. Can't remember my source and too lazy to look it up, but I thought you could enlighten me.

2 small things. Tonight's line up is indicative of a roster defect, no left-handed batter to put in as DH against Wainright, who is a shadow of himself.
I'd rather have Morel at DH than any left-handed hitter we have in the organization that isn't also in the lineup. Not sure there are any reasonable acquisitions available out there that I'd like to see in his place, either.

MM has a .297 obp, 1 HR and 4 RBI. Granted, he has 10 stolen bases, but his primary strength on offense is that he stands inside the LH batters box when he tries to hit.
I agree with the move, and MM is obviously a fringe Major Leaguer at this point, but he's had an OPS >.800 his past 15 games, which is pretty darn good. It's tough sending a guy down to the minors when he's playing his best ball of the season.

I can't be the only person who tightened up when Assad ran that ball most of the way to 1st, then seemed to short arm it to Bellinger.

I thought Ross may have screwed the pooch by not letting Taillon pitch the 7th inning, as he only had 84 pitches through 6 and he was pretty much cruising, plus the BP was a little bit short tonight.

Getting some very positive vibes off this team right now.

Okay geniuses, who are the prospects the Cubs are trading? They are now buyers, correct? Extend Belli and Stro, and let's go!

Bleacher Nation/ Cubs had a pretty informative piece earlier today as to who the Cubs might offer up as trade bait. It was a very good evaluation as to who might be expendable and who won't be.

It looked a little awkward. He did it like a little leaguer which was okay 👌

3-4 is an excellent road trip, but I was greedy looking at the starting line ups today. But, baseball is funny that way.

The Cubs released Edwin Rios today. That clears up a spot in the 40 man roster in case anyone was wondering.

Pedantic qualifier, but they actually passed him through waivers and then outrighted him to Iowa, so unless he refuses the assignment and takes free agency (I think he has that right), the Cubs didn’t release him, but the main point is that lucas is right and he’s off the 40-man.

Got it, I Lucas was right. :)
I won’t quibble over pedantic qualifiers on a Sunday night.

I didn’t feel good about posting that.…but unless he refuses the assignment and goes for free agency, the Cubs do still have him. 😜

Just a mention, not even a real rumor, but if the Padres decide to sell, should the Cubs go after Soto? I’d inquire. He has one year left before free agency.

Seems to me that the only reason the organization would outright a player that’s already in the minors is because they are planning a move to add someone to the 40 man and active roster soon. No evidence that Boxberger is ready to return yet, so I expect a minor deadline trade for a bullpen arm. I don’t know what the deal is with the Fulmer/Smyly/Wes starts these past few rotations, but I suspect that Wes will head back to Iowa after this move is made today or tomorrow.

Candelario to the Cubs…love it!! For Herz and Made
First I’m seeing who they gave up. Seems like a good return for Was; as I believe most still have both these guys in the cubs top 20 prospects. Plenty of SS prospects in the cubs minors; but starting lefties are few. Admittedly haven’t followed the farm system like I used to; but hate to see Herz go.

Was arguably the best hitter on the market, fills a need at 3B/1B, switch hitter, having a good season, love it. Hope they don’t stop there.
