*****Official Cubs 2023 thread*****

Rays acquired RHP’s Adrian Sampson and Manuel Rodríguez and international bonus pool money from the Cubs for THP Josh Roberson.

Sampson is the most likely to contribute for the Rays over the final two months as he’s made 72 appearances (44 starts) in the big leagues dating back to 2016. The 31-year-old righty hasn’t pitched in the majors this season, and missed a significant portion of the year due to knee surgery, but could wind up helping down the home stretch.

Cubs designated 1B/OF Trey Mancini for assignment.

This move seems to have been building for some time, as the 31-year-old slugger has really struggled at the plate this season — slashing .234/.299/.336 with just four homers, 28 RBI and a 78/21 K/BB ratio over 263 plate appearances. He could attract interest on waivers.

It seems official. That's a lot of money to eat, Jed. Probably shouldn't have signed him in the first place.
Been calling for this for months, but a $14M bath! Ouch!

The team isn't even in need of a spot on the 40-man (unless Boxberger is ready to come back, and nobody knows it). You know you suck when the team would rather eat your $14M than option Wisdom or Madrigal, or even eat Barnhart's $6.5M.

That’s nothing compared to the bath they’re going to take on Suzuki.

I haven’t heard that Boxberger is rehabbing anywhere, much less getting close to returning to the big league club.

Marquee just reported Bellinger is returning to the Cubs in 2024 for a $25 million mutual option??????

I haven't been drinking guys, but I swear I heard that correctly.

Even bringing up the idea of optioning Madrigal at this point is idiotic

Well, the original mutual option was for $12 million. It sounds like they made an arrangement for him to come back next year but for Swanson-level money. my guess is that the deal had been in the works provided that he wasn’t getting traded at the deadline. Definitely good news if true.

I didn’t hear them say it was already mutually agreed; but, I thought the mutual option has always been $25m, with this years contract of $12.5m and a buyout of $5m, so essentially $17.5m guaranteed. Or is that new?

I don't even know who the Reds manager is, but he's just letting Lively take a beating tonight. I know in a four game set you want to save some arms, but this is a horrific beating for a guy to take.

Bellinger and the Cubs agreed to the $25 million option, but he'll test free agency if he keeps hitting anywhere near this level. The Cubs will at least get a decent compensation pick out of him walking.
There is no way Scott Boras let's Bellinger waive his right to test the market.

Yeah, if true. I was flipping through the channels and hit Marquee just as they were wrapping up the story. I haven't heard anything about it during tonight's game though so now I don't know for sure what I heard.
