*****Official Cubs 2023 thread*****

Anyone have a source on the Bellinger $25M option thing? It’s been widely reported (and consistently reported on reliable sites like FanGraphs and Spotrac) that he signed for $17M with a $12.5M mutual option that comes with a $5.5M buyout if the Cubs opt out. I see nothing anywhere about some magical $25M option. $25M is probably not too far off what the qualifying offer would be, I wonder if someone switched those things around?

Yeah, story doesn’t make a whole lot of sense; I’m just hopeful. Maybe they talked Mancini into donating his ‘24 salary to Belli. :D

I just read an article that Shaw who was drafted by the Cubs this year might be thrown to 3rd base but projects as a mid 2024 MLB prospect to join the big league team. All based on his bat.

Not sure if I believe that but we'll see.
Shaw tripled off of the CF wall in his first AB with South Bend last night. He played SS, and Josh Rivera who was also selected this year as a SS played 3B. Both of them made their minor league debuts with South Bend last night.
The Cubs like to draft guys at SS and shift them to less demanding positions if they don’t pan out.

It’s a sound strategy. When you’re looking at HS and college teams, the star SS are generally among the best athletes on the field. SS can almost always learn how to play 5 other positions depending on speed, agility and arm strength.

Cubs are deep at the position and, you’re right, those guys can move around quite a bit. Looking at Fangraphs and MLB Pipeline top 30 Cubs prospect lists, I haven’t seen Matt Shaw on the list, but I know he’s expected to be a top 10 and maybe top 5 Cubs prospect once all the lists get updated beyond him, here are the Cubs SS in one or both top 30 (note: MLB Pipeline has already moved Made out, but Fangraphs hasn’t yet):
  • Cristian Hernandez: MLB Pipeline #9, Fangraphs #13…age 18 in low A
  • Jefferson Rojas: MLBP #15, Fangraphs #11…age 18 in low A
  • Kevin Made: Fangraphs #19…age 20 in high A
  • Derniche Valdez: MLBP #17, Fangraphs #21…age 17 in Rookie/Complex League
  • Ed Howard: MLBP #22, Fangraphs NA…age 21 in high A
  • Alexis Hernandez: MLBP NA, Fangraphs #29, age 18 in Rookie/Complex League
So add Matt Shaw to that list, plus I think they just made another teenager signing in the Dominican, factor in Dansby & Nico at the MLB level plus Mastrobuoni (Fangraphs still lists as a prospect at #34, but outside top 30 due to age) and it’s pretty easy to see why Made was a guy the Cubs felt ok dealing out of a position of strength. Obviously not all of these guys are going to play SS in Chicago, not all of these are going to stick at SS and several (maybe most?) of these guys will never make it to the bigs, but there’s a lot of options and a lot of guys who can shift around.

Not sure if this source is accurate; but this is where i had seen it. This could have been the original talks on the contact and not finalized; so I certainly could be wrong.

Thanks. I’m 99.99% sure that was an early, erroneous report. All discussions I’ve heard and every major place I go for contract info has the $12.5M mutual option. If it was $25M, it would have been in question earlier this year whether he’d take it or not.

Stroman is going to the IL. He should have gone a few starts ago.
I was wondering why Cuas hadn't official joined the roster, and maybe a potential IL stint for someone might have something to do with it. Now we know.

I see that Ben Brown. went on the IL today, too. That eliminates him from a spot start on Saturday, which would have been Stroman's next turn in the rotation.

Yep, I think you’re correct. That’s the only article I found in those #s as well.

WTF. He just pitched 5 pretty good innings on Sunday. Wonder what happened.

Maybe Assad gets another shot on Saturday; he deserves it.

Cubs should kick the tires on Dallas Keuchel with stroman in the IL. He opted out of his contract with the Twins and has pitched great in AAA. Yeah, he’s old; but maybe has something left. Some contender will give him a shot the rest of the year I would think.

Haven’t reward the details; but, I had no idea a vet could just opt out of a minor league contract like that.

No info on an injury in the world of X or on the Cubs sites. As mentioned on BN it could simply be him being fatigued and they shut him down for a turn or two to bring someone up to get a few starts at AAA.

Caught a huge break there with the fielding error leading to 2 runs. Hoerner or Morel should have driven them in, or at least one of them.

Which error? I think the Reds just committed three in the bottom of the 7th alone. And, the inning isn't over, yet.
It's like watching the Cubs play the Bad News Bears the last two nights. The only thing missing is the Chico's Bail Bonds next to the Kroger patch.

Senzel's error at 3B opened the flood gates.

Hell, if Happ and Suzuki start producing runs, the Cubs may not lose another game this season.
