*****Official Cubs 2023 thread*****

I saw it coming. They played out of their ass for a month. The trend all season was around .500 tops
Going back to June 1, the Cubs are 36-27 - that’s a 93-win pace for 2.5 months. This isn’t just “hot for a month”….and the series right before June 1, the Cubs took 2 of 3 from Tampa. Just gotta get more runs tomorrow and get the win. The Cubs weren’t going to go 12-0 on this stretch of games, so just have to go get wins.

It looks to me like the Cubs are playing loose against the good teams (Atlanta, Toronto) and tight against the poor teams (Mets, White Sox). And I like David Ross, but he didn't help that last night with losing his cool and being ejected, plus I assume his decision to bring in his closer down a run.

I never knew what the ejection was even about, but apparently he was complaining about a missed balk call. I don’t think that really moves the meter much, either way. As for the Alzolay thing, I have no problem bringing him in - he had only pitched twice in the prior 7 days and can go 2 days in a row, if necessary, with the off day on Thursday this week. I get the workload, but that was a 1-run game in the 9th and, as the home team, there was no potential save situation to save him for. The standard rule of thumb at that point is to go ahead and use your best reliever in that first inning of leverage.

Yesterday was just one of those games. Hendricks got BABIPed to death early (a couple sub-50mph exit velo singles) and the Cubs offense couldn’t capitalize on some chances to score more. Can’t stack these games up and make up ground in the playoff race, but they’re going to happen occasionally. Hopefully Assad has another good outing tonight.

PCA is going to have some weight on his shoulders to live up to the hype
I can see them calling him up in September as an extra glove and PR. He’ll get a couple starts, but he’ll get to experience a playoff race and get used only in spots where the Cubs think he can succeed. Could be a great way to get his feet wet.

If PCA, Caissie, Alcàntara and Canerio live up to the hype but are getting block by Happ and Suzuki I’m going to be pissed. I don’t care how much money they’re making.

Some combo of those guys will get traded - that’s part of prospect value. Trade from strength to shore up an area of weakness. In any event, there’s no scenario where all 4 of those guys are the starting OF for the Cubs. Alcantara’ s timeline actually lines up with the end of the Happ and Seiya contracts anyway.

Great win! Unexpected.

You have a better chance of winning the World Series with Cory Seager and Freddie Freeman on your team than building a team around Happ and Suzuki. Why does everyone think so damn highly of them? They’re average a best and you guys think you can win a World Series with them as the Cubs best players.
The Cubs may win the World Series with Happ and Suzuki on the team, but they wouldn't be their 2 best players, just like they aren't now.
