*****Official Cubs 2023 thread*****

I assume he’s expecting to have to use Wesneski for multiple innings today piggybacking on Smyly. What I don’t get is with the big early lead, why not go Rucker/Palencia unlessor until someone gets in a jam? Ideally, both Fulmer and Leiter would have stayed down yesterday.
Wesneski hasn't pitched in 7-8 days by my count. He could go two days in a row. And, despite it being a long season, you have to manage game by game. It isn't like they couldn't shuttle an arm in by tonight.

I hate to hijack a good Cubs thread with White Sox news, but thoughts on this? Would they seriously leave Chicago or is this just a negotiating ploy by Reinsdorf?

I saw this yesterday but the headline was framed as a move out of Guaranteed Rate Field in 6 years when the lease is up. Sounds like ownership is trolling for public funding for a new stadium. I don't think Florida is a legitimate threat, I mean, look at the pitiful attendance in that state. Nashville is going to be used as leverage, guaranteed.

As a Cubs fan, well, good-bye. Would suck for baseball to lose something historic like the Chicago White Sox but it's not like it hasn't happened before and worked out, Brooklyn Dodgers to Los Angeles, NY Giants to San Francisco, Boston Braves to Milwaukee to Atlanta, Philadelphia Athletics to KC to Oakland to Vegas?

Means the Cubs would have Chicago all to themselves.

No team in the history of sports has left a city after being there >120 years. This would put those other relocations to shame. IMO, the Cubs-Sox fan rivalry is one of the best parts of both franchises and would be deeply missed by both teams, whether they want to admit it or not.

I’m most surprised that they didn’t go to Palencia or Rucker in the 7th.

A little late this week after a knee injury and a reaction to anti-inflammatory meds.

Anyone else really enjoying this amusing story about Shooter from T-Mac?

They can not continue to put Smyly out there every 5th day. They are playing from behind every start he makes.
He has taken Taillon's designated spot in the rotation. Hard to imagine he nearly had a perfect game against the Dodgers earlier this year.

Jordan Wicks better be starting in five days.
Wouldn’t be surprised nor disappointed with the team making that move. This franchise is only in so many pennant races; can’t be essentially forfeiting every 5th game.

That said, I think Wes has earned another shot at the rotation. As long as it’s not Smyly. He’s obviously toast as a starter, but he’s been fairly effective out of the pen, where they really need a serviceable lefty.

Welp, seems that Smyly is staying in the rotation for now????

I just don't get it. This is plain sabotaging the team. Smyly has been trash as a starter for the better part of 2 months, while being fairly effective in the bullpen, where the team really needs a lefty. Meanwhile, Wes has had a great July-Aug, including a few starts, yet has been relegated to an undefined relief role (which has included trying to stop the bleeding after Smyly gives up 6-7 runs). Assad took some time, then was ready to step up into the rotation, where he has been great. I think we would see the same from Wes at this point.

Dang. Cubs lead 4-0 ... Taillon loads the bases in the 6th inning with no one out. He gets 2 outs and looks like he might get out of the inning, and then ...

Grand slam for Carpenter. It's tied at 4.

I was listening to portions of the game driving around town, and I could just sense the grand slam coming. Hall of Fame broadcaster Pat Hughes seemed to be attempting to will the ball to stay in the park.

Cedar Rapids plays South Bend on Marquee tonight, if you are interested. Connor Noland on the mound for SB.

This is a really interesting line up for SB tonight.
Shaw has been on fire since making his pro debut. Triantos and Alcantara are legit prospects. Ballesteros is one of my favorites in the system. He's a chunky little guy, but he hits. He just hits the ball. I don't know if he'll be useful enough at any one position, but he may have a home as a guy who can play 2-3 positions passably and stick if the bat holds true.
A little disappointed that Ed Howard is not in the line up tonight. He's stayed healthy this season since returning from surgery. He just needs work to get back in position to climb the system.

Ross has overused him. He needs 2-3 days off in a row.
There may be some truth to this (even though he DID have 2 days off prior to his appearance today). Due to being mainly a starter throughout his minors and MLB career, in addition to his injury issues, his 50 appearances is by far his pro career high (30 prev high in '21). He literally had NO SAVE OPPORTUNITIES in the minors, and only ONE in the Majors prior to this season, so he is being used in a way in which he never has before. At 56 2/3, he has thrown more innings than every other closer in baseball other than Bautista with BAL. This is largely due to his not being used exclusively as a closer until July, before which he had a number of 2-3 inning outings.

As effective as AA has been overall, I don't like the way his ERA has gradually crept up the past 2 months. But, his job is to get saves, and he hasn't blown one since the 4th of July, so I'll take it (especially since no one else has been even close to as effective in the role). I just hope his body is up to the challenge for another 6-8 weeks. I think the first thing Ross needs to do is completely stop using him in non-save situations (3 in each of July and Aug).

Great gutting out another tough win today. On to Pittsburgh.

If he had to, I think Merryweather could take over closing duties right now. He’s been nasty and getting nastier.
