*****Official Cubs 2023 thread*****

Matt Shaw in his first three at bats last night went homer, homer, and a double. It is not inconceivable that the Cubs challenge him with a promotion to AA to finish out the season.

There are no ties. You are either out or safe.
Sure, but they called him safe on the field, then went to video where maybe it showed a dead tie (but I still think he was safe) and they overturned the call. It was crap. Pretty big spot, too. 9th inning, Cubs down 2-1 after Happ led off with a HR, then Cody would have been on first with nobody out. It happens, but that was a terrible overturn.

This hasn’t started well for Wicks to say the least.

Edit for him setting down and striking out the side after the first 3 reach including a lead off home run

Wesneski crap the bed tonight.
Seems like PGH had quite a few hits that were of the "accidental" nature, whereas they weren't teeing off on Wesneski. Opposite field, check swing, etc... Of course they all count the same.

Glad the Cubs were able to pull out the win.

The schedule toughens up after Sunday's game. 12 consecutive games against playoff contending teams in Milwaukee, Cincinnati, SF, and Arizona. Of course Arizona and Milwaukee decide it's time to get hot again, especially the Diamondbacks. They looked like they were close to done a week or two ago. Such is the game of baseball. The Cubs still control their own destiny but they are going to need to up their game in the next 2 weeks to remain in competition. Any let down could spell elimination from the playoff race. We will see what they're made of.

So @lucas80 is Aldo Soto. Who'd a thunk it.

I posted previously that Shaw may be MLB ready next year if he comes up as a 3B, at least thats what the talking heads thought/speculated. I guess we'll see....next year.
If my dad hadn’t bucked with tradition my middle name would have been something close to Aldo.
My thought is that he’s mashing high A. Let him face elite velocity pitchers with better control at AA for 2 weeks. He’s hitting the best low A has to offer, but the talent goes up considerably at AA.
He should take 6 weeks off after the season, and then go to AZ to figure out where he can play. The system is flush with guys who can play short, but there is a glaring need at 3rd. Several of the prospects at short might switch to 3rd.
A mid 2024 call up shouldn’t be out of the question if the bat skills handle AA after breaking ST.

One thing the Cubs have done is dig for talent. They don’t always get them, but they are active and competitive.
BN story about the Cubs already pursuing Japanese pitcher Yoshinobu Yamamoto, who will be available this offseason.
I kind of liked this line from the linked story...

Of course, with a player this young and talented as Yamamoto, so many teams will be involved. Heyman lists nine other teams as scouting Yamamoto this week, and it’s all the big boys you’d expect, plus the Cardinals, Tigers, and Diamondbacks.

One would hope Yamamoto will fall in line for the Cardinals way. ;)

Being promoted to Tenn would also likely give him some postseason action, which the SB Cubs have no shot at.

With Vazquez getting promoted to Iowa in late June, The Smokies don't have any Major League talent at SS, so I could certainly see a move like this.

Fulmer, Leiter, and Merryweather were on track for 80 appearances this season. 50+ for Alzolay.
Well, Fulmer is on the IL now.
Hopefully this is basically a move for some extended rest. We'll know when we hear about any kind of rehab move to AZ.

I’m a little concerned that he’s been fighting the forearm for a couple weeks at this point. I’m glad he’s been able to remain effective, but forearm injuries are always worrisome.

UCL surgery is often preceded by “forearm soreness”.
Tough break for Fulmer, but not a disaster as far as the team is concerned. He gone after this season regardless, which was up and down to say the least. Just that much more important for Boxberger to come back his '22 self and for Cuas and Palencia to step it up down the stretch.

Cubs are still doing a great job post all star break-but frustrating the Brewers are also playing winning at high rate so we can’t close that gap. But good for Wild card race.

Is Cody Bellinger getting a 10 year deal this offseason? Just because he’s a Scott Boras client.

If anyone's interested, Amazon finally added Marquee Sports Network - if you have a fire stick/fire tv you can download/subscribe. pricey tho - $20/month.
