A little. I thought the day off in Arizona would help. Losing Candelario seems to have really impacted the line up, too.
Idk, Candy was hitting sub .200 his last 100 AB's. Probably missing his glove more.

I’ve been a light Ross defender most of this season. On the whole, I think he does a little more good than bad, but if Hoyer thinks he has someone better he can replace him with, fine. I like the fact that the players like him, I think he helps draw FA interest and he hasn’t lost a clubhouse during some pretty difficult situations.

All that said, I think a good chunk of what we’re seeing now falls right at Ross’s feet (with a share to Jed for roster construction). I get that he is trying to roll with the guys he thinks are the best 9 most days, but as @lucas80 and others have noted, he’s just running these guys into the ground. It’s also having a compounding effect, which we saw in the extra inning game on Saturday - bench guys are getting very little reps, so when you need them, they’re not ready to step up.

I know I had my stretch this year where I somehow because the Miles Mastrobuoni podcast, but I’m going to use him as an example. When Dansby and Madrigal were out in July, Miles actually stepped up and played pretty well for a couple weeks then he rightly went back down to Iowa when those guys came back. He was recalled August 19 and from that time forward before Saturday, he had a whopping 2 plate appearances in almost a month. You’re then in a HUGE game with massive playoff implications and you start using your bench deep in a game and not to defend anything (he actually hit the ball pretty hard), but you’re going to a guy for literally the third time in a month.

I don’t need Rossy to go back to the Maddon days of using 5 almost completely different lineups every week, but I am a believer that every bench guy should get 1 start every week to 10 days. Dansby shouldn’t sit 2x per week, but a day off every 2-3 weeks would absolutely be good for him. Having some variability also opens up the possibility that a guy on the bench goes on a brief heater like we saw from Tauchman this summer - if Bellinger doesn’t go down, then maybe we never see Tauchman in Chicago or maybe he’s the OF version of Rios/Torrens/Mastrobuoni and never plays.

Some of this is on Jed for not giving a deeper roster, but Ross still has to work with the roster he has and make sure he’s keeping all the guys fresh. It would certainly be easier if 90% of their games weren’t close and down to the wire, but you’re still going to have times like Saturday when you need a guy off your bench to step up and get a hit or make a play and it’s helpful if they’ve seen a live pitch in the last couple weeks.

3 games in Arizona over the weekend, and PCA didn't start. It's a huge CF, and they threw three mediocre righties in the series. Oh, PCA got in, but he didn't start. That's Rossy being Rossy.

I read the Cubs are altering their rotation against PGH. Assad, Steele, and Hendricks will start. Taillon getting skipped over and will pitch against Colorado.

PCA's mom will take the walk.

Was hoping for some magic his first plate appearance at Wrigley.

That 5 game losing streak was a killer in the standings. Pull 2 of those out and there's a little breathing room.

No breathing room now.

No, but at least they had worked to position where they have a chance to weather that 5-game losing streak.

Getting it done tonight so far.

The boys must have went to the Mark Grace School for Slumpbusting after last weekend.
They went to a bar on Sheffield and smoked cigarettes and banged married women trolling for jocks?
Whatever works! I say that because I saw it in action a few times. Grace and Paul Assenmacher on the prowl was a funny thing to see.

Paul was the Assman before the Assman.

Down on the Farm, congrats to the Tennessee Smokes for winning Game 1 of their Division Series. Especially impressive given all the guys who started the season at A-ball (Shaw, Alcantara, Horton (W), McGeary, Ballesteros, Pagan, and others).

On to Chattanooga for Game 2 tomorrow and Game 3 on Fri if necessary.

Hopefully the Big League club can turn things around and finish the season strong so they can have a postseason of their own.

5 solid innings for Horton last night. He could be special.

Am I the only person who thought Canario didn't get much of that grand slam last night? It didn't look great from the CF camera. He's got tremendous power, and it was a smooth swing. Just amazing how it sailed.

The Cubs are 10-1 against the Pirates this year. Why am I now so nervous about tonight? Todays' starter for the Pirates is Mitch Keller, who was the starter in the only game the Pirates won so far this year against the Cubs.
