*****Official Cubs 2023 thread*****

Basically the poor play has put them into a position where they have to sweep the Rockies this weekend. It's a shame. If they'd played .500 ball the last two weeks they'd be sitting pretty. But, this team now looks spent.
I'm not sure if it's true, but on the Score Leila Rahimi said that Kris Bryant hasn't had a hit since the series in Colorado.
That seems about right for the way things have been going lately.

BA has named Owen Caissie the Cubs minor league player of the year. I have not been as high in his prospects due to his abysmal contact rate last year and to start this year. However, he drastically cut down on his K rate, and didn’t lose the tantalizing power he possesses. He projects at AAA next season, where I hope he gets some time at 1B. His outstanding AA numbers this year came as a 20 year old player. Time enough to get the contact rate up with another year in the minors, and to build positional flexibility.

I”m just going to put this out there. Last year, the Phillies were in control of the 3rd WC when the Cubs swept them Sept. 27-29. With 3 games left, the Cubs had erased the Phillies lead. The Phillies bounced back and the Brewers choked out.

It ain’t looking good right now, but there are 9 games left and the Cubs are fighting it out with other teams that have been completely unable to create any separation.
Correct. All these teams have faults and that is why they can't pull away from each other.

it's baseball. i could totally see the Cubs going on a heater and getting in. I could see them tanking on their way out. Either way, none of these teams are beating the Braves or Dodgers.

I think his high SO rate early in the season may have something to do with the "sticky ball" that the league allowed to be used at that time. After it was disallowed, his rate came down about 25% IIRC. The kid does have a ton of power and is pretty much the last remaining prospect from the Yu Darvish trade that would seem to have a legitimate chance of playing MLB. First base would be a position of need going forward, especially with the glut of outfield prospects the Cubs seem to have. I remember him hitting a tremendous HR at the D'backs park during the last World Baseball Championships.

I come in peace....but can someone please explain to be the fascination with Crow Armstrong?
I've probably watched parts of 6-8 games and this kid looks vastly overmatched for the Cubs.
Today he was dead meat on a pick off throw and survived.
What does mgmt see that I don't?

I think he is only 21. He has started slow at other levels and then proceeded to turn it around. His glove is elite and I think in the minors this year he hit about .280, about 20 HRs, and about 80 RBIs. He is rated in the top 10-20 of all MLB prospects and hopefully takes over CF for the Cubs for the next dozen years or so.

Can the Yanks take care of the D'backs this weekend for us?

Most NYY fans hope to "lose out" so both Cashman and Boone get canned.

They are a massive shitshow this year.

Well, you've seen more of him than I have, then. He hasn't gotten enough ABs to form any opinion.
But, he's got a lot of tools, and he's got what many call, "It".

I know Smyly hasn't been in a ton of "high pressure" situations as a reliever; but his stats as a reliever have to be pretty decent.

And I see Stroman is starting tomorrow. Not sure what his pitch count will be; but, may burn some relievers if he can't go more than 2 or 3. Didn't pay a ton of attention how many pitches he built up to before being brought back up

Not with the Cubs, but he’s been in plenty big situations as a reliever in his career. He was a key guy in that 2021 Braves pen that helped them win a title.

As far as tomorrow goes, i wouldn’t be shocked if they have Wicks set to piggyback and take the bulk of the rest of the game.

Good point. Was specifically thinking his stint with the cubs.

Knowing the Cubs like I do .... I fully expect them to sweep the Rockies this weekend, making the dropping of the series against this same Colorado team about a week/1.5 weeks ago all that more maddening, considering where its put the Cubs in the position of needing to win as many as possible in the last 8/9 games just to 'sneak in' with that 3rd WC spot.

We're in the last week of the season, second in the division, in playoff position, and playing meaningful games down the stretch. I didn't expect that this year. I feel were s year early but have now arrived and will be in contention for years to come.

We coming.
Can't really argue that. Spot on.

(but since the Cubs played really good ball to get themselves in a playoff-worthy position, its still kinda aggravating they might just miss out if the dominoes don't fall just right for them in the last week+ after a losing skid vs a lot of inferior competition)

Yeah, they had a great set up agains the Rockies and Pirates. Is what it is now. Gotta play it out.

Assad was brilliant in relief in what was basically a piggyback start, I assume.
Sucks that Boxberger is out. He looked decent in his few appearances back.

Mastrobuoni pretty directly got them a couple runs today. Good to see contributions from the bench when shots are given.

He has proven to be a very valuable bench piece the last half of this season. I'm happy to see it. I remember how much grief he caught while playing RF in an early game against Milwaukee. Happy for him.

HOLY COW!!!!

I saw that the Reds had jumped to a 9-0 lead after 3 innings and assumed that they had beaten the Buccos.

Little did I know.

Pittsburgh ended up winning 13-12, while their closer, Diaz, pitched 2/3 of an inning and gave up 5 runs. Looks like Cincy has overused their BP as well. Pittsburgh scored 12 runs between the 6th-8th innings. Maybe the Cubs gave them some momentum????

LOL

Come on Brew Crew! Beat Miami tomorrow!

EDIT: It was the Reds closer Diaz who totally collapsed, not Pittsburgh's. Just wanted to clarify that point.

Chi Cubs sweep....and Tenn Smokies are one win away from Southern League Championship.

Chi Cubs dug themselves a hole the previous 13 games before the Rox series, so they gotta win at least 3 out of last 6 to have a chance for the postseason, I think, especially with losing all the tiebreakers, and hopefully even THAT would be enough. Looks like pitching lineup will be Steele-Taillon-Stroman/Assad-Hendricks-Wicks-Steele (hopefully last game won't be relevant and Wes can get a start so we'd have Steele for Game 1 of WCS.

For the Smokies, Game 2 at Pensacola Tuesday, with Game 3 at Pensacola Wed if necessary. I don't have info on starting pitchers, but my best guess is K. Franklin Tues, with Horton Wed if necessary.

Haven’t the Braves lost 2 starters this week? Decent time to catch them if they are resting guys.

I assume they’ll cycle guys. They already get almost a week off with the bye, but they’re not going to want to risk injury. Probably a couple normal starters down every day in this series. Doesnt’ really matter, Cubs just have to play good ball. When they’re sound, they can compete with anyone.

I hope Bellinger enjoyed the raucous celebration with the fans after today’s game. I hope Suzuki took a video and sent it to his pal Ohtani. Wrigley is magic.
Not saying Bellinger gives a hometown discount, but he lives in AZ where the Cubs have ST, and several of his other suitors have their ST in Florida.

As long as the Cubs don’t approach this expecting a Belli discount, I think they’ll get a deal done.
