*****Official Cubs 2024 Thread 🚽*****

Well, the positives after the first 2 games after the AS break are:

1. The BP has pitched 8.1 innings of shutout baseball
2. And...

I don't think we are going to get fooled again this year that we can get to the playoffs.
And yet the team really isn’t built to sell. 3 no-trade clauses, only a couple expiring contracts. Even as I wish they’d just effing go for it and spend more, they spend enough to compete, but they’re doing it so poorly. They could trade Taillon, but then you have to replace him for next year, so that’s just buying another guy on the FA market. If a team takes Bellinger, I’m in for clearing his player options. Nico could be an interesting trade.

The pitching (Hendricks & the bullpen in particular) have gotten a bunch of attention this year, but it’s the offense that’s KILLING this team. They had Gallen on the ropes multiple times, including a 2nd and 3rd with nobody out and couldn’t score. Hendricks wasn’t perfect today, but the Cubs gave up 3 runs. You should be able to win that kind of game.

I'm going to throw out there another big concern for the entire athletic training staff and perhaps all the pitching coaches. There is no way that every single pitcher on the team should have arm problems. It's absolutely absurd. The Cubs have to go out and buy another retread journeyman pitcher every few weeks just to fill the active roster...until he gets hurt, too, then do it again...

I’m actually less concerned with the arm problems (that’s kind of just pitching in 2024) and more concerned with the surrounding soft tissue injuries - obliques, rib fractures, neck “stress reactions”, etc. Cubs have had so many of those this year that I have to wonder about strength/training practices.

I've seen a few posts on different sites that say the Cubs are about middle of the road when it comes to injuries, but there is always room for improvement.

I've never really been a fan of robot umps, but when you see garbage like that it becomes more palatable. And, the atrocious call on Morel clearly affected Swanson's approach. He swung at two balls that were low and out of the zone because Ortiz had called that same pitch out of the zone a strike several times today.
I didn't understand why Counsell didn’t get himself thrown out of the game after the series of bad calls.

WTF has he done for this team? He sure the didn’t support the players Friday.

I think he was trying to bait the umpire to respond to him so he could come out and get tossed. I generally assume umpires know they are missing a few calls, especially with instant feedback to k zones. They can hear fan reaction to replays. Unless your a raging moron like Joe West or Angel Hernandez you know it.

Two interesting posts on Bleed Cubbie blue yesterday;
1. This season is pining for the fjords.
2. Hector Neris is tied for the team lead in wins, and leads the team in saves. That is one crazy stat. Supposedly it hasn't happened since the 1950s when a Pirates pitcher finished the season leading his team in wins and saves.

Hard to believe Mike Marshall (Dodgers) didn't do that back in the 70's. His 2 years (1973 and 1974) are still 2 of the most incredible seasons for a relief pitcher ever. 25 decisions in '73 and 27 in '74. And led the NL in saves both years! He had another big year in Minnesota in 1979. Crazy. :)

Year...Games...Starts.........W-L......Saves....ERA........Innings
1973.........92.............0..........14-11........31..........2.66..........179.0 Finished 5th in MVP
1974........106.............0.........15-12........21..........2.42.........208.1 Finished 3rd in MVP

1979.........90..............1..........10-15.......32..........2.65.........142.2 Finished 11 in MVP

The 2025 schedule was recently released and I see games at the Yankees and at Toronto as possible trips to plan. Nothing beats watching the Cubs in Wrigley, but it is also fun to attend a Cubs road game and see the great Cubs fans support. What are some of your experiences attending Cubs games on the road?

Here are my Cubs road games experiences with some game detail assistance from Baseball Reference box scores:
  • Baltimore earlier this month, attended both shutout wins. Cubs fans were loud!
  • Philadelphia in August 2019, brutal 3-game sweep including a 9th inning collapse. Cubs led 5-1 and lost 7-5 on a Bryce Harper walk-off grand slam.
  • Pittsburgh in June 2017, Cubs split 2 games, win included a 6-run 9th-inning rally.
  • Boston in May 2011, Cubs scored 8 runs in the 8th and won 9-3, Babe Ruth’s daughter was honored pre-game.
  • Detroit in July 2001, Cubs win 10-6 and Ron Coomer had 5 RBIs.
  • Milwaukee sometime in the early 2000s, all I remember was a close loss

Cubs at Brewers in 2016 (July 23). Cubs lose 6-1. Ross brought in new lefty reliever just acquired in a trade (from KC, I believe) to face left handed hitter Kirk Nieuwenhuis. 1st Hitter he faces hits a 3 run HR in 8th to seal game. We laugh and say that was a great Cubs' debut for that pitcher - will he ever pitch a meaningful pitch for the Cubs?

The pitcher was Mike Montgomery ... who got the last out of the World Series that year. :)

I was listening to Ian Happ on The Score when I was running the bulldozer. That turd could care less about baseball all he wanted to talk about was his craft beer and breweries.

Neris is tied for 19th overall with 8 wins. As frustrating as he has been for the Cubs he has been fantastic for my fantasy team.

6-29-19 @ Cincinnati. Cubs won 6-0 and Javy hit a grand slam.
6-29-24 @ Milwaukee. Cubs won 5-3 and I was 50' away from plummeting down an escalator after the game.

I've seen them multiple times in St. Louis with mixed results.

I'll be in Kansas City Saturday night to check that one off the list. Not sure I'll make it to a game at Wrigley this year. Hard to justify dropping the money to support this extremely mediocre squad.

Also, while not among the elite closers, he’s converted 13 of 17 save chances since being pushed into the closer role.

I lived in Colorado for 10 years so probably saw 15-20 Cubs games at Coors Field. Been to a couple in St Louis (old park), Milwaukee, and SF as my sisters live in the bay area. Also went to Yankee stadium to see them get swept in 2003 I think.

Looks like the Cubs won’t be buyers, instead putting focus on 2025. Pretty pathetic, how Hoyer keeps his job is amazing.
