*****Official HORT Golf General Discussion Thread*****

As of now in my year long big $ salary cap league I have:

Rory, Bryson, Hatton, Cam Young, Pavon, Bhatia. Subject to change. Best 3 scores is the format. If you have more than 3 MC you get the worst score of the day as your placeholder (I have never had to worry about that, knock on wood).

As far as Vegas bets I have:

Rory (1/2 unit) at +800
Koepka (1/4 unit) at +4300
Hatton (1/2 unit) at +2800
Scott (1/4 unit) at +6000
Morikawa (1/4 unit) at +1650
Cam Smith (1/4 unit) at +4500

I also still have Koepka in my preseason bets to win any major (I already hit the first 3 on my preseason prediction bets). That's 1/2 unit at +500.

I changed my team based on gut and some intel. Rory, Bryson, Koepka, Pavon, Hatton, Olesen. Final.

Let’s go.

Okay you magnificent bastards. Moving to the second best and final major:
Give me your:

Core 4
Longshots
and Fade

Core - Finau, Aberg, Schauffele, Lowry

Longshots - Pavon, Bradley, Rai, Harman

Fade - Scottie because I’m a Moran - I have this on hot key

Still waiting for weather forecast to lock in.

Granted 1st round is under way

Core: Åberg, Rory, Morikawa, Kim
Longshots: Koepka, Hatton
Fade: Schaufflee

I still have a chance on Scheffler to win and Morikawa T-5 finish...

On the other hand, both the Finau T-10 finish and Fleetwood T-10 finish tickets are dead.

I opened up my Open app a few days ago, and whenever I bet a major I’ll highlight the players I have money on as one of my “favorites”, where it puts those players at the top of the leaderboard to make it easier to find their scores. It still has my saved players from last year and I immediately remembered how horrible this tournament was for me last year. So, I quickly decided not to place any bets this year.

Probably a good decision, but a little painful to see that Lowry and Rose were two of my guys last year. Also, I’m currently in Florida and unable to get even if I wanted unless I went with an offshore.

So who is the leader for POY now? Xander has two majors and top 10’s in the Masters and U.S. Open. Scottie has 1 major, 6 total wins including the Players. Top 10 in the Open but a disappointing 41st in the U.S. Open.

Still has to be Scottie, yes? 6 wins and a major. Stats are borderline Tiger-ish this year.

Joel, Have you got your new irons yet? Would like to hear your feedback on them after you get a few rounds under your belt.

“My irons”….no……it will be a couple of weeks, anyway. I am using a set now, however (loaners)…..Tghere are two differences….one is these are steel shafts…I am going the graphite route….the BIG difference is the “loaners” have an oversized…and I mean OVERsized grip on them…..It makes oit difficult to release the clubhead at impact….I have to be very careful or I hit a lot of “push fades”…..and then occasionally I overcompensate and hit some dandy pulls! However, the irons are very easy to hit and feel solid. I am sure I will get along well with the new set…once they arrive. I will keep you posted.

Xander is just so damn solid. Zero holes in his game. Meanwhile, Scottie's putter varies from week to week. Scottie has the edge right now, but I expect Xander to overtake him down the stretch.

Outside of my wife, I haven’t shared with anyone that I have been using the golf forever program for 1.5 years now. It checks all my boxes. Good cardio workout, great physical lifestyle workouts (focusing on flexibility, longevity, injury prevention), I can golf 72 holes an weekend and not be the slightest bit sore (outside of plantar fasciitis foot issues) and it has brought my driving distance up to an average of 260-270. It’s not a program to fix poor technique but my flexiblility and rotational power is night and day better.

I’d recommend to any golfer, but not the people I golf with 😝.

Xander’s final round was truly a thing of beauty. He was in control damn near the last day. Hardly ever out of position and the last 9 holes was like he was having a good day on the links worth the boys.

I looked into this last winter but didn't pull the trigger. Do you have a referral code?

I checked if I had one to give out for a discount for you and maybe something for myself and did not find anything, but it does look like there is possibly coupon codes or other deals online.

A little more background on the workouts:
They each consist of two parts: foundational/activation workout and a rotational power related workout. They get chosen for you based on your progress, etc. Most workouts use bands and the golf forever swing deal. I have a few favorites, I go back to often. One of my go to’s is a 7 minute “warmup to hit bombs” workout… I do that before actually golfing.

Obviously I strongly recommend it and it is cheaper than a gym membership, but it is a touch spendy.

Am still going with this setup. Adding one more course to Friday, but not sure what yet.

Ideally would find a best shot that we’d play in too but having a hard time finding anything unfortunately. Aug 8-11 in case anyone here knows of any tournaments
The week has arrived and weather looks incredible. High of 80 each day.

Thursday: Bos Landen
Friday: TCI and Otter Creek
Saturday: Coldwater and Waveland

Had to pivot a bit because Copper Creek didn’t have any tee times available. Think it works out better for us as our Saturday combo is better than what I think the other combo would have been (Copper Creek and Terrace Hill).

Casino/Horse track Friday night too.

That looks like a great few days!

I’lll be playing in a 3 person best ball tournament on Saturday in Quimby iowa. Three man on Sunday at the home course and a chamber two man on Monday.

This past weekend, I golfed spring valley (Livermore) for the first time ever. One man best ball tournament, ended with a 76 from the tips, couldn’t hit a putt and recorded one double bogey on 17. Damn there were some high level golfers out there that day. I also ate some mushrooms at the turn, that was fun. But that course is top notch.

Sounds like a great weekend.

Spring Valley is a real solid course. Grandparents were from that area and I played it often.

Nice!

One observation is many approach shots, one does not have an actual view of the green surface. Not every hole, but I found myself hitting approach shots into the green and having no idea if it was good or not without having someone give me a signal.

Their one par 3 like the one Augusta, my favorite hole of the day, I had a 8 foot complete bender of a birdie putt, had to putt up slope to let it come back to the hole, otherwise it would have rolled off the green.

I felt like if I knew the course, I could have golfed better.

Curious, the membership and green fees look very affordable; is the backstory where the family hasn’t really been concerned with turning a profit, but rather taking pride in the course?

Haven’t played it for several years, but from relatives there, heard that the course is in great shape and that the owner is putting a lot of money in it - more than can be generated for a course only open part of the year.

But don’t know why or backstory.

Perhaps other posters or @fan_4_life knows? He’s from that area.

I live 1.5 miles south of Spring Valley but I don't golf so I don't have much insight. I would guess that the location of the course is what keeps the fees low. It is roughly 12 miles south of Algona and 16 miles north of Humboldt. Not a huge distance to travel but Algona already has 2 courses and Humboldt has one too. Fees have to be reasonable to attract people out here.

How did your mini golf vacation turn out, Hope you had a great time!

Fairway Finnigan here, your intrepid 2024 US Women's Amateur reporter ... kind of.

Well, I just mean both of the finalists on this day were actually girls. One was a 17 year-old Filipino, Rianne Malixi, who I am going to endearingly call Maxfli (Ya know I had a red golf bag with MAXFLI in big white letters when I was a teen. It was ratty but I thought this unique find was just toooo cool).

The other girl I'm going to refer to as Asterisk (*) because ... that's her name of course! Asterisk Talley. So here we go again, that's toooo cool ... AND she's a 6 ft 15 year-old US phenom. But Maxfli is no slouch, she's beaten * twice this year, iirc.

(Incidentally, no. 7 was the first hole of play I viewed)

and Asterisk's approach shot a good 100 yards closer. She had caught a little downslope, but still I thought she would be blowing it past Malixi all day (did not prove to be the case). But Malixi would stuff it to about 10 ft and Asterisk, already 2 down, would pull it 25 ft left. Boom! Asterisk drains her putt ... but Maxili sunk it right on top of her! Lol, these young girls are good!
