Saturday will be UI's 4th rematch vs a B1G team (Purdue, Nebraska, Rutgers, Illinois) this year. The #Hawkeyes are 3-0 in previous rematches

FM: The bye allowed us to give some of the guys who have been banged up a couple of days off so they could recover while also working on us.

Fran McCaffery said today that he was in Philly in 1980 watching as a fan when Iowa beat Syracuse & Georgetown to advance to the Final Four.

Yikes, Iowa was 9-8 coming into this game, with Troy Skinner as our starting PG. Just a slight drop off from BJ Armstrong.

The message boards would have been interesting back then!!!
That game was in the midst of the whole Deon Thomas fiasco. Interesting energy in that game. Lou didn't want to shake Dr. Tom's hand before or after the game. Iowa program was fighting for its identity a bit with recent release of super-talented Ray Thompson, and also recent return of Acie Earl from a three-week suspension for off-the-court issues.

Les Jepsen was great, and I mean great, in this game. Also this game reminds me of the talent Iowa never really got to enjoy: Rhodell Davis. He had a lot of game and a lot of bounce to go with his incredible natural strength. But he never could get his knee right. He would have the occasional "good knee" day in practice and nobody could handle him. He would make James Winters look like a little high school kid.

Anyways, as I watch this game so many years later, I almost sense that while Illinois was pissed at Iowa for drawing attention to their shadiness, they knew they were just mad for being caught. While Iowa, on the other hand, was pissed for "stealing" Deon, then further pissed for being treated like they were somehow just as much in the wrong for exposing Illinois. So it's kind of like the energy of this game reveals Iowa's anger as more justified, if not morally superior.

I think I'm making sense. Interesting game to watch and think about the circumstances surrounding it.

Bold Predictions: because of today's occasion, Illinois walks into a buzz saw that is an unusually lively CHA

my doctor says not to watch this one...
he says the pressure to win this is way too enormous...

but Imma gonna watch anyway.
this is the kind of game that can springboard a team to a National Championship.

This is a game the Hawks have to win. They are on a 2 game losing streak, so it is important not to fall into a "February Swoon" like they have been prone to do.

Go Hawks!

To the comments regarding Rodell Davis, I knew a guy from Chicago who played hoops against Davis and others of that era in CPL and other venues and he said Davis pre-knee injury was nearly unstoppable. One of the best players he's seen. He claims that Rodell would be remembered as one of the Iowa greats had he not suffered that knee injury.

Fran should probably ditch the defense that leaves the tall guy under the basket all by himself...

Yep, dude is definitely a what-could-have-been. Paul Lusk as well.
