**** Official Israel War thread****

Not going to happen. And, don't lay all the blame at the feet of the Palestinians. Israel has not made a push for a two state solution. As one commentator said on NPR this morning, Bibi has been okay with, "mowing the grass", occasionally. Low grade conflict was good for him politically.
Why do you suppose Israel hasn’t made a push for a two-state solution?

People forget that there are real humans suffering so that morons can stay in power. It's a shame that govts have propped up both sides and allowed this to continue all these decades instead of forcing a solution.
Some day this kid will fight in this conflict and people on the internet will blame religion.

I’m not so sure they aren’t ready/want this fight. They saw how well Afghanistan resisted and they are much more militarized. And I don’t say that to take a shot at our time in Afghanistan, that’s not my point. My point is it was an excessively long, prolonged, drawn out war and I think Iran/Syria want a fight.
The only thing I would say is that this won't be like Afghanistan or Iraq. We took over those countries pretty quickly, it was the occupation that was the issue. This won't be the same because we aren't going in, Israel is doing the fighting, we're just in a support role. Also, we played by rules of engagement in those theatres and had our hands somewhat tied. Israel will come at them swinging.

I don't think the Arab states should want any part of Israel. It has always ended up badly for them.

Pretty good speech by Biden. I just wish he wasn’t so bad at talking and trying to relay a message.
Completely agree, it’s absurd a nearly 80 year old man is running the country. I’m also thankful he ran and beat trump. I don’t think anyone but him could have beaten trump at the time. I’ll gladly vote him a second term if for nothing else but keeping trump out for good.

I’m a proud and happy Biden supporter, if nothing else keeping trump far away from DC. Feel the same way. You know he has a good heart and a great message to convey but it’s clearly wearing on him at this point. Like the post by Solar, I’ll vote for him a second time but man wish we had a younger leader at this point in time. Obama’s speaking skills would’ve killed it tonight, hell W could’ve fired the public up with the message.

Maybe send the MAGA republicans over to the West Bank since they don’t like CNN either.
Maybe send this bunch instead with a one way ticket!!!

The US has used its veto at the UN security council to block a resolution calling for Israel to allow humanitarian corridors into the Gaza Strip, a pause in the fighting and the lifting of an order for civilians to leave the north of the besieged territory.

The text – supported by 12 of the 15 members of the security council on Wednesday – contained criticism of “heinous terrorist crimes by Hamas” and made no direct reference of Israel. In an attempt to win US support, the draft resolution did not explicitly call for a ceasefire, instead referencing a “humanitarian pause”.

But the US ambassador to the UN, Linda Thomas-Greenfield, said the resolution, carefully crafted by Brazilian diplomats, was unacceptable because it made no mention of Israel’s right to self-defence. The UK abstained, saying the resolution lacked mention of the way Hamas was using ordinary Palestinians as human shields.

The US ambassador said she was horrified and saddened by the loss of life, but that the actions of Hamas had brought about the humanitarian crisis. She also called for time to let Joe Biden’s diplomacy play out.

Israel thanked the US for using its veto. China described the move as “nothing short of unbelievable” while Russia said it was an example of US double standards.

Two members of the G7 on the council – Japan and France – broke with the US by backing the motion.

The draft resolution also called for “humanitarian pauses to allow full, rapid, safe and unhindered humanitarian access for United Nations humanitarian agencies”. Its failure to pass represented another blow to the authority of the world body.

CAIRO, Oct 20 (Reuters) - Hamas' armed wing the Izz el-Deen al-Qassam Brigades has released two U.S. hostages - a mother and her daughter - "for humanitarian reasons" in response to Qatari mediation efforts, its spokesman Abu Ubaida said in a statement on Friday.

Abu Ubaida said they released the citizens "for humanitarian reasons, and to prove to the American people and the world that the claims made by (President Joe) Biden and his fascist administration are false and baseless."

Well shoot, I'm convinced - grab a guitar and let's sit around the campfire and sing kumbaya

Good move on their part, and I doubt that humanitarian reasons played any part of the decision. Releasing two Americans creates a bit of hope that more hostages will be released, and creates discussion in Israel about whether or not to go in with ground forces. It was a delaying tactic.

They marched on the White House to make their demands clear: a Biden-brokered ceasefire — now; the release of hostages held by Hamas militants; more forceful American condemnation of Israel’s bombing of Gaza; and, eventually, major changes to the current Israeli government’s treatment of Palestinians.

The protestors, gathered Monday afternoon by progressive Jewish American activist organizations, represented various segments of the US political left: Palestinian and Israeli Americans, Jewish and Muslim people, longtime activists, and newer allies sympathetic to a more nuanced position of peace and reform for Israel and Palestine.

But they also represent a more mainstream progressive vision of Palestinian liberation and anti-Zionism than the one elevated in the days after the Hamas attack last week. Early news coverage, social media algorithms, and politicians and commentators from both major parties zeroed in on protests celebrating Hamas, social media posts by far-left groups, and open letters and rallies organized on college campuses as the true face of the American left. But many of these activists and organizers have spent the last week rebutting that image, refocusing the political and media narrative about the consequences of the Israel-Hamas war and American complicity, and building up support for American diplomacy from the grassroots and in Washington.

This wasn’t the first major demonstration in the capital — a weekend protest organized by the pro-Palestinian advocacy group American Muslims for Palestine also drew thousands — but these anti-war protestors marched to the White House as their calls picked up institutional recognition and support in the halls of Congress. On Monday, 13 progressive members of Congress — not just the Squad — signed on to a resolution calling on the Biden administration to broker an immediate ceasefire in Israel and Palestine and urge de-escalation in order to bring humanitarian aid into the Gaza Strip.

“That resolution represents what most of us actually want to see,” Beth Miller, the political director of Jewish Voice for Peace Action, one of the groups that organized the Monday protest, told Vox. “The most important thing for our members of Congress to understand and for the general American public to understand is that there is no military solution to what is happening right now. Israel is dropping bombs on entire families and neighborhoods of people, and it will not solve anything. It will only lead to more violence in the long run.”
