From what @smalls103 said, it doesn’t sound like the portal matters at all. Guys can just leave a school, enroll somewhere else and they are in.
In order to take advantage of the 1 time transfer rule, an athlete must enter the transfer portal. There are exceptions for coaches leaving, graduates, and getting a scholarship reduced/eliminated/kicked off the team. The devil is in that last detail. If a coach doesn't want to stand in someone's way and is willing to help a guy transfer, they can take that step and they are free to go. It becomes very murky at that point. That's the way I understand it based on a convo I just had.

I wish Glazier the best. I really enjoyed watching him develop in Iowa City. He had a stellar regular season last year with several clutch wins. Sad to see him go, especially after AJ got ran out of town.

What I bolded above will never sit well with me and I won't ever get on board with it. What the Hawks are doing might be the best way to get back to the top with the landscape that's here, but it doesn't sit well with me. Loyalty matters, to me and I think this will hurt Iowa in the long run. Not sure how, but it's tough for me to watch bridges being burned.
I also think that the Brands are great people and this whole thing probably has them losing sleep and questioning their morals.
Agree wholeheartedly with this sentiment. I’m guessing this new NIL/transfer happy landscape is a little uncomfortable for Brands and staff, but I appreciate them doing what is currently required to get the Hawks back on top. Recent results and recent national champs matters and we need to get some more guys wrestling and winning on Saturday nights and preferably in a dominant manner.
These recent moves give the team the best shot at that and I commend the staff for probably doing what is contradictory to their preference, but what is required given the current situation to get back on top and become a bigger draw for recruits.
Not going to go through this whole dream scenario, but exactly how is Arnold going to score more points than PSU when he just lost two straight to the PSU guy who will not even sniff making the lineup this year?

Spooner said earlier that the coaches could reduce or take away his scholarship if he asked or they wanted to, which would allow him to transfer without using the portal. I'm sure if that is true TnT would be willing to do that to let these guys try to be a starter somewhere else. This will hurt all teams depth if true I'm guessing.
When your whole thing is "breaking news" you don't get the benefit of "some of the times he's even right!"
Yeah it's a double-edged sword swung exclusively at Iowa.
If TNT stand firm and back Siebrecht, Riggins, Hill, and Glazier they're recruiting sucks and they aren't doing enough to win.
On the other hand they go out and land MONSTER transfers in Parco, Teemer, and Buchanan (and let's not forget Caliendo/ Franek), which are clear upgrades and all around better wrestlers then they get crucified for it.
Michigan did the same thing and dare we ignore a few of the big mercenary hires PSU has stirred up?
I've been critical of TNT over the past few years and rightfully so, but the transfer portal is one area they are kicking ass in. Now they need to compliment this advantage with legit blue chip recruits that actually pan out.
I think if you were sitting in front of either guy right now and asked them if Tom or anybody from the Iowa staff contacted or recruited him, you would get a "No." In fact, I think this is part of the process with an inbound athlete. Shady? Meh. The ground shifted and this is going on throughout college sports. Adapt to the new reality and rules (or lack thereof) or turn down 25-30 team points.
Let me turn this around: What if the fanbase found out that we could have legally gotten these two, within the ruleset, and wrapped up in a pretty bow and Tom said "no dice...I like my guys." That would not go well. In fact, many would accuse him of not doing his job.

Good point. Will be a good measuring stick to gauge Brands and staff's abilities to take guys that were close to the top and hopefully push them over the edge.
It seems Iowa may be approaching a bit of a "sh*t or get off the pot" position with the current coaching regime. I'm pulling for them to prove they can get more champs and be the differentiator to help get guys so close to finally capture that top step of the podium.
If the apples to apples comparison favors the other coaches who are working with the former Iowa athletes though, the criticism and possible regime change would at the very least have more recent and tangible results to base moving on from such an accomplished coaching staff and figures amongst the greatest to don the black and gold.
I love the high risk for high reward approach though and am excited to see how it all shakes out. The status quo wasn't going be enough to leap frog Penn State. You got to mix it up or try some other tactics which is exactly what the staff is doing and should be commended for such.

Hurry up and wait. Thankfully the temperatures weren't too bad and the wife (no pics) wanted to be more poolside than really kill it at the parks.
They both made the finals at Iowa (and were as close to a title as you could be and not get one) which was better than either did at their previous schools so I don't know that you can use that against Tom. While they weren't champs, both were damn close and finished highest while at Iowa so not really a failure in coaching.
Exactly. Didn't quite get the results with those two. It'd be nice to get a bit of a larger sample size to come to a more definitive assessment to rule out situations where injuries likely had an impact and no amount of coaching could overcome that.
Can't argue the talent with the incoming transfers and am excited to see how they develop or at the very least hone their skills/conditioning in the Iowa room.
