****Officially cancelled. F*** ****

Ridiculous overreaction. Yes, this virus is significant, but no need to incite mass hysteria.

What next......shut the country down completely for the next month or so? Then what? This country is going to be needlessly destroyed.

Stupid, stupid, stupid.

I'm not the one getting enraged at the idea that cancelling the NCAA basketball tournament isn't the end of the world

I don't think I said anything about the tournament or it affecting me in any way. I'm enraged by the lack of accuracy in the information people like you are spewing. You're literally feeding the hysteria.

But I see you're done now, so all is well. Go Hawks.

I am literally just stating facts and nothing I have said has been an exaggeration. It seems like it's actually you guys who are flipping out about this for some reason.

When you say other people aren't panicking as much as I am, are you referring to the NBA, NHL, NCAA, and MLB who have cancelled their seasons? Or the various local and state governments who have banned gatherings of over 250 people? Or are you referring to the lead infection disease expert in the country projecting 100 million cases and 50 million hospitalizations?

I am referring to the fact that you are coming unglued over this and ginning up panic.

I'm sorry - what information have I said that is inaccurate?

So they are cancelling the rest of the school year or do they expect this to go away in a couple weeks?

Currently online only through April 3rd at Iowa- I assume they’ll re-evaluate the situation continuously and extend if they decide its necessary

Thanks to the needless panic and mass hysteria that is being whipped up......there is likely to be total anarchy. Because of the extreme overreaction, tens....maybe hundreds of thousands of businesses are going to go under. Millions will lose their jobs. Many more millions will be ruined financially because they will have no income for several weeks when businesses are closed.

There will be a shortage of food and medicine. Medical facilities will be needlessly overrun by hysterical people, which will result in people who really NEED treatment to not get it.

Talk about fear mongering. Holy overreaction there, Batman!

It kills 20% of people over the age of 80. It's going to kill over 100,000 people. Wake the **** up man.

I'm sorry - what information have I said that is inaccurate?

For starters it's at 14.8% for 80+. 100,000 dead, while not completely wrong, is broad speculation.

But specifics aren't the point I'm trying to make.

My biggest issue is your determination to create fear by citing what COULD happen. At the end of it all you might be right. Can't argue that. But what sense is there in inducing panic with hypotheticals? Look, I can tell you're very informed on the topic and have put a lot of thought into the fallout of it all. I look at what has happened instead of what could. Really no sense in getting heated about it, I just think your views are exaggerated. None of it was a direct attack at you (except maybe after the R word, that fired me up a bit).

At the end of the day I see the panic as futile, and you see it as warranted. Agree to disagree.

Go hawks.

I'm so impressed with the amazingly large number of people on this board who are already experts on this virus that had never infected a human being until last fall. This place has always been such a great resource for accurate information. How many of you has the WHO already contacted for advice? I wish I were as smart as all of you.

This is not the first pandemic to hit the USA but it's certainly the most ginned up one. The Swine Flu during obama's years was pretty devastating but the media didn't gin it up like this one. I wonder why?

Maybe because...

1. The world learned a lesson in 2009.
2. Obama at least acted like he was taking it remotely seriously instead of calling it a hoax.
3. World communication is much quicker and faster now and thus misinformation and panic spreads quicker. Old people didn't even know what Facebook was in 2009.

Just what do you think will happen when this country gets shut down for a month?

Personally I hope this doesn’t happen. But given the fact this country is being whipped into hysteria (unnecessarily), I don’t have any good feelings about the future.

Why is it unnecessary? Don’t care about other people’s lives? In Italy they’re overrun with cases and can’t treat all. Basically they’re treating it like war and deciding who to treat and who to not treat.

Completely understand the sentiment. Unfortunately, it is war. It's the outbreak vs apparently all weak immune systems. I think what's being misinterpreted is the perspective. A lot of people will die from this virus. The final number will be continuous and disheartening. Spend more time with the older category of your loved ones. But in the grand scope of the population it'll affect lives the same way the flu or even cancer do. It's just the new cause.

Not the first to say I'm mad as hell that no tournaments are happening. I'm notorious for dedicating a room in my house to ALL tournament action. I think the extent that all major sports organizations have taken this to is excessive based on current data, but it is what it is. Card laid, card played.

Here's to the 2019-2020 year for Iowa sports in general. Exceeded expectation across the board and high hopes for next year. Great to be a Hawkeye.

So, creating mass panic and hysteria is going to avoid overtaxing healthcare facilities, hoarding of food, and economic collapse? Ohhhhhkaaayyyyy.

1. How many people over 70 die from literally ANYTHING else?
2. How many people over 70 would be at these games?
3. Fact check. 14.8% for people over 80, 8% for 70-79

Old people are getting sick and dying, as they always have. The only difference is we gave it a scary name.
You really don't understand much. Young people also catch the disease, and can pass it on, even if they don't get really sick or die nearly as often. So, you and those, who don't give a shit about old people, must have terrible family lives with no one older, who you care about.

I'll do the number thing again, just because it's more fun.

1. Never said young people couldn't catch it. I think that's pretty obvious in a pandemic.
2. I give a lot of shits about old people. Loads and loads of shits.
3. I love my family dearly and I hope they all make it through this.

Let me reiterate - I LOVE OLD PEOPLE! My parents and grandparents are the coolest cats in the litter box. But I can't do a damn thing about them dying. Or anyone else for that matter. Neither can you. So you and everyone else with a savior complex need to realize that you're a small helpless drop in a huge ocean that's partially poisoned.

Glad to hear it. So, follow directions that the medical experts are providing, and don't infect the ones you love.

Thank God our President banned travel from China early on, and the nation will be spared what Italy and the rest of Europe is going thru.

At the end of the day, this will come down to basic hygiene practices. While there will be people infected of course, the US (with it's second-to-none healthcare system) should be fine. This is not the coming of the zombie-apocalypse.

Outside of the mentally ill (i.e. homeless people, socialists, greta thunberg acolytes, etc) everyone else should be smart enough on their own in assisting to mitigate the spread of this virus without such draconian measures as currently being implemented. They are all mostly for psychological purposes.

My two cents.

Thanks doc
