****Officially cancelled. F*** ****

So the virus won?

To anyone making the argument the death rate is the same as the flu. That’s probably right, assuming things stay the same The problem here is the volume of people that will be infected. More people will be infected because we don’t have herd immunity. 1 percent of a million is less than 1 percent of 100 million.

How many people would be involved to play a conference tournament without fans in attendance? Maybe 500-750?

How many people ride public transportation every hour? How many went to the grocery store last night to pick up eggs, bread, and milk in Iowa City alone?

Better safe than sorry.

Bingo, that's the plan.
2009. 65 million infected.12k deaths.300k hospitalized. Who remembers? Not even that unusual for a normal flu season. Crazy train panic and rationalizations for wildly meaningless restrictions in a 350 million person nation. Making up doom day scenarios does not equal reality. Wait till your job goes bye-bye and lets see how enthusiastic y'all are then.

So what level of casualties is acceptable to you? If one person died because they contracted the virus at the tournament is that okay? 5? 10? What’s your number? The whole point is we don’t know. As someone said this will help control the spread according to the health professionals. I think that is way more important than playing a game.

A top U.S. health official said the worst is yet to come with the coronavirus outbreak that has already infected more than 1,000 people across the nation and resulted in at least 31 deaths.

“I can say we will see more cases and things will get worse than they are right now,” Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, told the House Oversight and Reform Committee on Wednesday at a hearing on the nation’s preparedness for the outbreak.

Fauci said COVID-19 is at least 10 times “more lethal” than the seasonal flu, even if the mortality rate drops far below the World Health Organization’s current estimate of 3.4%.

Whom should I believe? An expert or random internet poster? tough call......

Believe data. 73,432 closed cases, 68,677 fully recovered. 56,750 active cases, 51,039 in mild condition. The quote is a cop out. What a fvcking epiphany that "we will see more cases and things will get worse". It's a virus. Virus' spread. Get this dude a medal.

But hey that's hysteria for ya. "It's 10 times more lethal than the flu, even if the data doesn't support the claim. Everybody freak the fvck out!"

I agree especially as there will be people who have underlying health conditions that may not know about. It’s not necessarily 100% about the healthy people who contract it and recover, but those they’d spread it to who wouldn’t recover as easily or at all. Why enable the spread of it for entertainment purposes.

Why that many?

Team, staff, refs, scorekeepers, camera operators and a couple announcers ...40-50 people max.

They just said during the Creighton/SJU game that they allocated 200 tickets to family and loved ones. Guessing that was combined between the two schools.

March Madness and tourney week are my favorite sporting event, by far, but it is time for people to realize that how we react in the next few weeks will have a HUGE impact on the spread of the virus. Don't be surprised if you see some areas being shut down, much like Italy or the epicenter in China. There are still too many unknowns to know how this is going to progress, but it will get a LOT worse before it gets better. I just hope and pray that our government and business leaders agree on some measures to protect the regular people from the financial hardship that is coming.

Well one difference is that public transportation/ food shopping etc some airline travel are necessary while a basketball tournament is not. Understand I love this time of year with BB.

These kids have the same probability of catching it at whatever bar they flock to when they get back to campus.

Don't allow the nursing homes to drop their patients off. That would help.

Air travel is necessary? How many lives are you willing to endanger so you can travel faster?

It kills 15% of people over 70, unless they do not matter? All tournaments together are not worth loss of 1 life.
JFC, better shut down everything then. How many people have died in auto accidents driving to sporting/entertainment events over the years? How many people have died from the regular flu after attending an event during that time? Do their lives mean nothing to you?

Please, think. Regular flu kills 0.1%. If we behave the same way as we do during regular annual flu season, we will have 10-30 times more dead. Is that still acceptable for you so you can enjoy basketball games?

How safe do you want to get? Martial law to keep people inside?

For me i luv sports and the hawkeyes but in this instant better safe is the right way to go. its a game that is all and for people to get sick or die that isn';t a game. everybody vcdvd has to make their own decision on safety. The big ten thought better not to play. the world hasn't ended

1. How many people over 70 die from literally ANYTHING else?
2. How many people over 70 would be at these games?
3. Fact check. 14.8% for people over 80, 8% for 70-79

Old people are getting sick and dying, as they always have. The only difference is we gave it a scary name.
