Ohio State allowing 1.83 yds/rush attempt (#3 Nationally). Do we have a Pass Offense that will work when needed?

Sure, except KF's "developmental program" ain't known for developin' much out of a bye week. Maybe Lester will change that trend. He'd better, because a one-dimensional Iowa offense is a formula for (1) getting embarrassed and (2) getting RBs hurt.
This is silly. KF has been here 25 years and we've seen plenty come out of the bye week. Cannot confuse the last three years with KF's entire tenure.

They HAVE to develop a package of RPO's for Sullivan. They HAVE to. And they have to commit to playing Sully early in the game, no later than the third series of the game.
You may very well be a lot closer to the game plan than you know. I don't know about 3rd possession but ... based on information and belief Sullivan will see a lot more downs against tOSU.

Spartans knocking off the Buckeyes this Saturday just seems like the perfect Iowa thing to go down...

Fat chance of that happening

If anything, tOSU might be looking ahead to their game the following week at #8 Oregon.

Ohio State's (3-0) remaining schedule:

Sep 28 at Michigan State
Oct 5 vs Iowa
Oct 12 at #8 Oregon

*****Oct 19 Bye*****

Oct 26 vs Nebraska
Nov 2 at #9 Penn State
Nov 9 vs Purdue
Nov 16 at Northwestern
Nov 23 vs Indiana
Nov 30 vs #12 Michigan

OSU will probably play the hawks straight up to start with, 7 in the box, and maybe one safety a couple steps closer to the LOS. Right now OSU with better defenders than Minny is not real scared of our passing game. But I watched Marshall and they really made some good pass plays, with some really good receivers.

But really a passing game for Iowa is to run quick slants and other patterns that get the receiver between our QB and the defender. Throw them the ball, catch hit, and sustain the hit or get some extra yards.
Getting the LBs and DBs to stay put and not crash down to the LOS will be an imperative. I have more faith in Lester coming up with a game plan than Brian ever could. Whether it can be executed is always the unknown. Cade must be better. The WRs must be better. If they are, it will be an edge of your seat close game.

The D and special teams can't give up the big plays.

I agree with you; I think Lester will have a good game plan. It still probably won't be enough, but I am hopeful we won't get blown out this time around........

I put the odds of beating OSU at about 5%.

We have not been competitive with top 10 programs the last 5 or so years.

Iowa passing vs Minnesota:

7-13 for 16 yards in the first half
4-6 for 46 yards in the 2nd half
........................................................................
11-19 (58%) for 62 yards overall

3.3 yard/attempt

0 TDs

0 INTs

Good points. There is little doubt that OSU is going to score points, Iowa is just going to have to make them "earn" it. I would also expect that OSU will score on a long one - even in the 55-24 beat down, OSU scored early with some long passes - they're that good. They just need to limit those and not panic when it does happen. Iowa will need to score at least 24-28 points to be in the game, so they'll need to keep their foot on the accelerator on offense. Getting a small lead and trying to squeeze the life out of this game won't work, not against OSU. It's far from an easy task to go into Columbus and win, or sometimes even be competitive, but Iowa is capable of making a game of it. I think we'll know by the end of the first quarter what kind of game it will be.

Do you guys remember what happened the last time we went to Columbus with the thought of, “We’ll have to pass it to stay balanced and catch them off guard and keep it close!!”

We turnovered ourselves out of that game in a hurry and wasted an incredible performance from the defense.

As another poster said, we need to play this one like Michigan played USC. Teams that load the box against us are making themselves very susceptible to the big running play. Maybe OSU can get away with that. Maybe not.

I’m not expecting a real close game, but I wouldn’t be surprised if it happens. Lester seems to understand what we do well, and he throws more wrinkles out there every week. We’ll see if he can cook something up in a couple weeks.

Great point, honestly. And it's not like everyone still isn't stacking the box any differently than they have been in the past. We're just a lot more successful at it. But damn wouldn't it be nice to be able to hit them w/a play action bomb after a few successful runs? I mean when was the last time that even happened over the last 3-4 years? I guess the Penn St game in Iowa City when Petras did it. Can't even remember hardly scoring in any other games against the big 3.

I pretty much agree. Come out and establish the run. They know we are going to run but can they stop it?? THEN Lester should be able to see how they are playing us off of that and THEN he can start calling more pass plays based on what he sees. ALSO I hope Phil was talking about Harris today when he was talking about tackling. He whiffed a few in the MN game. Made some good plays as well, but for sure has room for improvement.

Protecting Cade is going to be huge. How many times have we seen missed pass blocking assignments in big games destroy drives.
Penn State terrorized us last year, and this OSU DL is at least as good as that one…probably better.

The boys up front are far better at run blocking than pass pro and tOSU has some dudes that can get to the QB, as always.

Tim is going to need to get creative in play design and calling to keep this close into the 4th.

Our line is playing much much better than last season. We do have the wild card of a player that the defense knows will can go for six on any play, lacking last season. Our QB is better than the QBs last year, including his own game; and he may not be the QB as much in the tOSU game as he has been thus far.

Hard to see an Iowa win, Iowa almost always, and since the league was first formed, loses at Ohio State. This year's offense is much better than whatever we put on the field against Penn St. last year. My biggest fear is the receivers get behind the unusually forgiving Iowa secondary.

Yep, going into this season I thought our defense was built to make things really tough for OSU; big, physical, difficult to block front 7, with a secondary that keeps everything in front of them and limits YAC. Well, the front 7 is as advertised, but the secondary has to get much better in a hurry to resemble what they have been in years past.

Brutus always has great receivers.
