Players were getting a lot of that before nil. That was the argument I always made... they are getting paid quite substantially if you factor in potential future earnings from networking etc.

Strict Team Caps on NIL
Player Contracts

That would clean up a lot of this right off the bat
I could be wrong but I believe the current antitrust laws/rulings prohibit the NCAA from imposing any such restrictions.

I don’t think you can have a salary cap (I.e. a restriction on a players earning capacity) without unionization and a collective bargaining agreement

The NCAA has become almost irrelevant. They allowed the NIL to get completely out of hand because of the lack of a cap. And ditto for the transfer portal by eliminating the "sit out a year" requirement. Is there any wonder why venues like Iowa are suffering from attendance woes? Fans are quickly becoming indifferent to the game where player loyalty to a school is almost a thing of the past.

Every time they try to put any restrictions on the get sued and lose. I'm not sure what else they could do.

The only real way out of this was having the players unionize, and unfortunately that got resisted by the NCAA and Admins at schools. Now it's totally out of control.

I’ve got another one: Whenever teams get to go to bowl games, all the players (and coaches) get SWAG bags with some really cool stuff. We’re talking hundreds, if not thousands, of dollars worth of merchandise.

Do teams at the NCAA tourney get something similar? I know JBo was bitching about the SWAG not being good enough a few years ago.

he was so pissed he stole a floor mat, IIRC

I will say it's kind of funny just how loyal all the players were to Fran.
I’ve wondered if any players will follow Fran to Penn. Obviously the Ivy League is a step down, basketball-wise; but as much as the players supposedly appreciated Fran, I could see some of them giving Penn a look. An Ivy League diploma might look nice for some of these guys.

For you to go around saying Owen quit on the team and calling him a scumbag is appalling. I think he knows more about his surgery/ medical situation than you do. Just stop the name calling , it’s a really bad look.
Scumbag and a piss poor teammate.

Didn't it come out as fact that Coleman Hawkins got $2M from Kansas State (remember his tearful postgame press conference?)?

I can see how fans are getting turned off.
Well it’s the fans that are paying the players. So obviously they’re not that turned off as the market keeps going up. Everyone says this is unsustainable but it’s cooking right now.

Good for them. I wasn’t fond of his game and then wasn’t fond of quitting on the team. That’s not the player you want in your program.

Agreed. I wonder if Doug has a 2 foul jail like Fran?

Freeman was elite at going to jail quickly

Maybe Kingsbury? 🤷‍♂️

I wonder if Tadjo and maybe Dembele end up there ?
Ivy League schools do not give out athletic scholarships and Penn costs over $90k per year to attend. Unless they can find somebody to pay them significant NIL $ then I don't see anybody following Fran there.

I don’t think what he said is a bad look.

That picture of Owen by himself in the locker room post game…that was a bad look…

But they do give “academic” scholarships.
