Bo was forced out,.. by his wife.
and his kids
Bo was forced out,.. by his wife.
You are definitely wrong about Lute. He did a great job at Iowa and would have kept the Hawkeyes in the upper echelon of the Big Ten.
I could be wrong but I always heard that he left because of his wife.
I think it was Iowa’s high income tax rates!I could be wrong but I always heard that he left because of his wife.
The rumor was that she was sick and the warmer weather was better for her. They eventually made public that she had late-stage cancer in the late 90s
I think he even said publicly that warmer weather was part of the reason for leaving.
Bingo!I have never understood the obsession over the exact reason Lute left. People leave jobs for many reasons all the time. There is rarely ever one specific reason. Time and place. He decided we wanted to take the opportunity at Arizona. BFD. Worked out well for him.
Same with Bob Stoops taking the Oklahoma job. people need to stop looking for reasons or someone to blame.
With help from his wife.Bo Ryan willingly retired. He wasn't forced out.
They used the possible move as leverage to improve their contract and probably the contracts of their assistants. They may or may not have had any intention of leaving. I take it you never looked for another job or ever asked for a raise? If kicking someone to the curb because they are looking at improving their situation is your answer to that, then you learned from a shitty mentor.Bingo!
Agree 100%!
If a coach wants to go, if I was AD I’d give’m a list of movers to contact.
Iowa should have done that with Fry back in ‘85-86 when he was sniffing the USC job. Iowa should have let Kirk explore those NFL jobs after the ‘02 season too. These often are empty exploitive contract extortions and not much more.
You pay a coach as well as you can, you support him the best you can and honor your contract…but when they come out “sniffing” at other jobs, that is the time to let them go….and find a coach who wants to be there.
Oh, If I were king!
I took 3 different jobs in my life…Twice I talked with the new employer and a few day later gave my old boss my “2 weeks”…neat and clean. I liked the “new” offer better than my current situation. No use letting my boss think I might not wanna be there. I would never use “exploitation” as a negotiating tactic. That is not fair to either of us. $$ of course, I told bosses I needed more money..sometimes I got it. My work performance pretty much spoke for itself. I got fired once, too. They used the possible move as leverage to improve their contract and probably the contracts of their assistants. They may or may not have had any intention of leaving. A good boss knows people look from time to time. If you were at the top of your profession and still wanted to stay at your current job, your employer had a choice. Match or lose. Exploitation is not the same thing as leverage. Some times you have it as an employee and some times you don't. But for a boss to simply show you the door because you look to use it is wrong and likely not an employer that will earn much loyalty from his/her workers.I took 3 different jobs in my life…Twice I talked with the new employer and a few day later gave my old boss my “2 weeks”…neat and clean. Well they both grew up in North Dakota. Iowa is like Florida to those who live ND. lolIn his autobiography of 2006, :"Lute...The Seasons of My Life"
Lute Olson says that one of the major reasons for the move
from Iowa to Arizona was to go to a warmer climate. His wife
did not like the winter weather of Iowa. Lute himself did not
like the travel conditions for his team from December to
February.....too much snow and wind.
I had an old buddy who moved to DSM from Duluth Mn. about 50 yrs ago…he and his wife thought they had moved to the tropics after their first winter here…Well they both grew up in North Dakota. Iowa is like Florida to those who live ND. lol
Sometimes you need to break an egg to make an omelette….😉 If the Big O moves on, so be it…😎With Kalkbrenner on his 12th year at Creighton I’m assuming he’s gone. Creighton does play a fast tempo game and loves to shoot the 3 like us. He’d be a great fit for them. Hate to see any of our top guys go but if we do actually bring in a new coach we’ll probably lose almost everyone.
Weather and living in the "Fish Bowl" of Iowa City. I don't think Jim Bain was scheduled for Arizona games, either! LOLI could be wrong but I always heard that he left because of his wife.

You on your 2nd bottle of whiskey?Heard some stuff today, call it from a sister of a sister of her friends boyfriends type of thing-
Dix/Freeman/Harding to Creighton
Fran resigns
Iowa hires McDermott
McDermott brings Freeman/Harding back
Dix to Nebby
The problem with that scenario is why would any coach think about taking the Iowa job with the miserable student and fan bas, let alone McDermott who has Creighton in a good place, he'll be there as long as he's coaching. As far as the players are concerned It all depends who Beth can convince to take over for Fran after the season. Iowa needs to push the reset button no matter who stays or go's from the roster. You on your 2nd bottle of whiskey?
