**Paris Olympic Wrestling**

In the moment, it does suck. Then time builds perspective. It reminds that but for a crafty vet’s savviness, the medal’s gold. If either of two “grounded pushouts” puts two freakin’ inches of air under Rei’s kneecaps, the lead’s 3-2, Higuchi’s the one overextending to catch up, and Spencer’s tacking on that TD capper. Time will also recall that no one else threatened Spencer on this ultimate senior stage, not even pesky Zou.
I hope quality days with family in France starts the healing. I hope he realizes how successful the trip was and the great value of the medal he won. And, if health allows, I hope we see him in LA.

I’m hoping Spencer decides to compete for at least another four years. He should consider visiting/training in Japan for a spell, imo. I’m sure there are other freestyle hot-spots around the world but it sounds like he appreciates the Japanese culture. I’m starting to think US freestyle wrestlers might benefit from immersion in another country’s techniques and training methods.

You heard it here first….

Can't speak for the Hawkeye wrestling club, but there's a steady stream of top level international guys coming through the NLWC.

I am just venting, but it just felt like we were due for something amazing. For the past several years it just feels like we have been denied, like we cannot have nice things. I thought we were going to win in 2020, denied. Back to back? Denied. Kemerer wins a title! Denied. Fine, but Spencer will when his fourth title, the first Hawkeye to ever do so! That cannot be taken away! Denied.

I know he lost to a worthy opponent, still quite a feat. Nothing to have shame about. But again it just felt like something amazing was coming and it is so disappointing coming up short again.

Also another reminder of just have ludicrously hard it is to win Olympic gold. I think about all the amazing wrestlers Penn State has had and they only have 1 gold to show, and even that was but the slimmest of margins.
This your first time being a Hawk? It’s our destiny unfortunately

Day two update from Paris. Man what a day. The full range of emotions from ecstasy to agony on display as competitors' dreams were realized or crushed. Spencer's match had me as nervous as I've ever been watching or competing in wrestling, and I've never wanted something so badly as a fan in my life. Props to Higuchi, he wrestled a smart and tough match. Can't remember a time when an opponent's head/hands kept Spencer out like that. He is extremely good.

Being there live was heartbreaking to witness, so I can only imagine what Spencer is feeling right now. The thing that got to me most was during the medal ceremony. They put the gold medal around Higuchi's neck and he held it out to look at it. Spencer looked over briefly at the gold and then down again at his silver, and the pain on his face brought my wife and I to tears. How brutal this sport can be for those who invest their entire lives into it.

After listening to Spencer's interview, I hope he knows that a lot of people--from Hawkeye nation, the USA, and around the world--do really care about what he accomplished this year. Twenty, hell forty, years from now, I'll still be rambling on about the way he wrestled to anyone who will listen, and I know I'm not alone. What he battled through to take the silver medal on the world's biggest stage is truly remarkable. He has inspired countless people from young kids to even this aging cynic. No idea what comes next for you Spencer, but I hope you know how your career has inspired us up to this point.

It was great to see Brooks and Helen battle back for bronze. Brooks getting fed up with the Uzbek's stalling and just start hitting blast doubles was a thing of beauty. And I am absolutely elated for Helen to earn her third Olympic medal. She is the trailblazer for American women's wrestling, and after the adversity she's been through, this was an incredible accomplishment. Her medal celebration had me tearing up again.

Overall, despite the tough losses, it's been a really solid Olympics for the USA. Five medals and counting. I'm old enough to remember much darker days for team USA. The expectations have certainly risen.

Other random thoughts: Jason Bryant is the English announcer in the arena, and he is killing it. Props to Japan for coming ready to ball out, but I don't want to hear your national anthem again for a long time. Hanging with foreigners here is great fun. Had some beers and exchanged BS at a bar tonight with some Germans, Japanese, Iranians, and local French tonight. Go Hawks, Go USA, and we love you Spencer!

You didn't have to wait for the Olympics to be so insightful...you could have posted this amazing comment about Keckeisen the last 5 years. Guessing you would have received the same amount of likes though: 0

Well, they should fire those clouds and replace them with clouds that will let an Iowa wrestler win an Olympic gold medal.......

Olympics had to make room for break dancing and the mixed relay walking marathon.
Can’t believe they showed all the break dancing medal matches on the main NBC network, along with women’s artistic dancing, but can’t show even the wrestling gold metal matches. There can’t be that many more breaking and artistic swimming fans watching than wrestling fans.

tuned in late and missed his first match but snyder won 9-5

zain lost 8-0 to Iran. very tough matchup but he never got close to scoring.

ok dude. i don’t know if it was the bald part or plumber part but i apologize for hurting your feelings. hope you have a nice weekend

I think the inability to ever be satisfied is both a blessing and a curse for people like Spencer Lee. He has 3 jr world titles and 3 NCAA titles plus too many other titles to even count and he isn't satisfied. Does anyone think that if he had he won a Gold yesterday, he would have been satisfied?
That drive to excel and get the next win is what propels him to excellence, but it also leaves him wanting more. Who among us wouldn't be happy with his career? I guess that is why he is Spencer Lee and we are not. -That and some serious genetics. With all the sacrifices he has made and the injuries and frustration, I would hope he can at least feel some satisfaction, gratitude, and peace with the results of these years of dedication. If not now, hopefully in the near future.
I do not think Terry Brands has ever come to terms with his Old Bronze. That is sad, because the journey they both had was amazing and only something most of us can dream about.

In the Medal stand pics of Spencer Lee, there are 4 dudes on the podium (Japan-gold, USA-Silver, India-Bronze), what medal does the 4th wrestler (from Uzbekistan) have on his neck? I did not know there was a medal for 4th in the Olympics?

The worlds and Olympics give two bronze medals. In their version of wrestlebacks, the group of wrestlers who got beat by both finalists wrestle back against each other. The Uzbekistan was the winner of Lee's group. Today, Zain lost to the Iranian who is in the semis. If he loses, Zain is done. If he wins, Zain is "pulled back in." Personally, I think they should have a true 3rd.

I’ve always disliked the grounding rule in freestyle. Spencer’s match is a textbook example of why it should be changed.
It should only be for times when both men are scrambling and go out of bounds. If one man is in control like Spencer was, and the other just drops to his knees when being controlled and pushed out, it should be a point for the one controlling the action. That is just a form of stalling. I’m still trying to understand freestyle. Glad they got rid of that ball grab thing.

🤦 That would have been absolutely awful officiating considering Japan took almost all the shots.
Just because you got off more shots in the first period, doesn’t mean you can’t stall in the second half . It’s not a get out of jail fee card for the rest of the match.

2 bronze are stupid. Have a true 3rd or wrestle backs. That would open up 6 medals for 2 more weight classes.

I don't know if it's been mentioned, but Trackwrestling shows Dake forfeiting out.
