Penn State Dual

Not sure why Hawk colored glasses??
Every weight class I listed has a very realistic shot of winning their match.
Because while "can" is pretty loose term - you have us winning as many 5 matches.

Given our recent performances, that's some half full vision you go there.

125 is definitely 50/50
141 is 50/50
149 - we're significant underdogs. Not that we'll get majored, but recent results say this isn't a tossup
157 - losses to Blockhus and Lewan don't give me the fuzzy wuzzies about this one

Now lets talk about 165. Caliendo is so damn athletic. He's going to be the toughest match Mesenbrink has had to date. He should be able to actually wrestle with him in neutral (which no one has proven yet capable of).

I think we should just run out ALL the Ferrari's WWE-Style.

Agreed (but not about 149). I give Caliendo a better chance against Mitchell than most do. MM seems small. MC doesn’t and I worry the Hawk could overpower him. Like you say, Cali’s an athletic, quick kid with a high attack rate. With so many great matchups Friday, this is my #1 because both get after it. Runnerup is 125, where our middle-schooler finally meets an elite. Also think the “real Real” shows up at 141.
Ticket envy, for sure.

I didn't use the word "can". Not sure if you just want to be argumentative or don't take the time to read what I actually wrote. We have a realistic shot at winning the 5 matches I listed. I understand it won't be an easy task, but no one should be shocked if we win those matches.
Mesenbrink is a flipping stud and no one has really gotten to his legs this year to threaten him in neutral. I 100% believe Caliendo will get to his legs and hopefully he can finish. Caliendo is the most athletic guy Mesenbrink will have faced so far this year.
Guess we'll just have to wait and see how it all pans out.
Go Hawks!

Can is a big word like the words if and but. I could see his scenario playing out but I See yours as more likely. So If I had to guess PSU wins 7-10 matches. He says 5, that's his best case scenario. Mine is ten. Yours is close to mine so if I have to make a call I say PSU splits 125 and 141, 165 is a tossup and I give the edge to Messenbrink.

Dang right i'm being argumentative! Isn't that the point?

Hope you're more right than me, honestly. I do think Caliendo Mesenbrink is going to high scoring affair for both guys.

I'm not worried about Drake beating Davis at all. I actually see a path for a major. I see multiple takedowns by Drake and he'll feed off of the home crowd. And Davis will be backing up Lilledahl next year. He's not the same level of recruit that Drake or Luke were/are.

Lilledahl is likely going to redshirt next year. Penn State doesn't really need any of their recruits coming in to wrestle right away. Possibly one of the Mirasolas at 197, but Cochran could do OK there as well for a year (and at least qualify for NCAAs). Truax & Brooks are the only guys in the lineup out of eligibility (and Barr is waiting in the wings to take 184), although Starocci has been saying all along that he's done after this year, so they're probably going to lose him as well, with Facundo back for 174 next season if Starocci is gone.

it's not 100% - but it IS in carver. That's good enough for 2 wins. We're going to find out if Real has hit the typical Iowa senior slide though.
I’m more worried about lingering effects of being sick recently.

This years build up to the dual is disappointing to say the least. Not just because Michigan took Iowa to the woodshed less than a week ago but because even those with the biggest Hawkeye glasses know they have no chance of winning. Both Ferraris would be smoked if we had them, Keuter will get dismantled if he wrestles and Arnold will be embarrassed if he gets on the mat. Doesn’t matter who’s in the lineup, this board is talking about moral victories if Iowa wins three matches and going to the PSU board asking for a 20 point spread to bet. That’s embarrassing.

That was brutal.

No, what's embarrassing is that you posted this taunt. Probably a Nit Troll. They come out of their holes this time of year sorta like Covid. Actually more like ringworm.

I'm the sucker who gave him the 20 points and took the bet! :)

Kind of wrestling noob but am more into it as my boys have taken an interest in the sport. I remember after freshman football our Varsity wrestling coach practically begged me to wrestle and saying no is now starting to be one of my bigger regrets in life.
Anyways as a die hard Iowa fan I've always been aware of the wrestling team being top notch but in the past 5 years or so compared to PSU what happened? We seem to be solid on lighter weights but is it coaching, recruiting, money?
I plan on watching with my son's. I guess I am interested in some background knowledge, thanks!

I'll give you the Ironbird version before he gets a chance to. Penn State and their scumbag of a coach "Krailure" are cheating in every way that a team can cheat.

Then, there are several who like his posts that imply that they are cheating and imply that Cael Sanderson is a scumbag.

If/when Iowa falls out of 2nd place, I'm guessing the teams that pass them by will be cheating as well. More on that in the next few years.

Well, you came to the best, and worst, place to ask. Be prepared for answers in both categories. I'll try and summarize the most likely answers.

1) The Brands are stubborn and old fashioned and it finally caught up to them.

2) Hurricane Karl formed over Pennsylvania and there was no real chance to prepare or get out of the eye of the storm. That storm may or may not have been legal.

3) Relax, we're still the 2nd
to 5th best team in the country, eventually the storm will lose energy.

4) 83% (you'll figure out the meaning later).

5) Trump and/or Biden screwed everything up

6) You may have to provide pics of your wife to get the true answer.

How Penn State hired Cael Sanderson. It really doesn't need to go deeper than that. He is this generation's Dan Gable. Could Brands be more active in recruiting? Absolutely. Does Iowa need improved upper weight coaches? Yes. Would it make a ton of difference in the end? Probably not. Cael caught lightning in a bottle and it is what it is. It would take an equally crazy move on Iowa's part to change the trend line and dynamic in collegiate wrestling.

Thanks for your post. Better late than never. Coaching, recruiting, or money? The answer is yes to at least two of these, with differing opinions as to which ones. The targeted (and unwarranted) gambling probe from last Spring certainly didn't help us either.

Do a search for opinions attempting to answer your questions, as we spend a ton of time on this board debating them, interspersed with a generous supply of venomous trolls hoping to rub our faces in the disappointments of this year's team.

I am certain BK got plenty of reps against bigger guys than he’s ever faced in football practice. I understand in football they aren’t trying to take you down, however there are brief explosive encounters of hand control, shedding and leverage. What I am saying is, he’s had a feel of bigger stronger guys.
If he does go, you certainly don’t want to go under Kerk. He has a better chance of scoring in scrambles if Kerk doesn’t get off a clean shot. There is an outside chance of a freak throw.
Having Fat Cass would help him a ton. Skinny Cass definitely helps but doesn't give that true HWT feel

I believe Luke is wanting to wrestle 125 next year out of the gate. My opinion is Davis will RS and possibly grow into a 133

Nice job fan of scumbag, except for #3.
I've never heard Ironbird (or anyone else) claim that other teams are cheating. You're just trying to share the attention with those other teams. ;)
