Perkins

Never dreamed he would be the offensive threat he turned into these last ten games. Went he penetrates he gets a shots off consistently. Bodes well for next year
he definitely showed flashed of fearlessness last season, but yeah never imagined this big of leap! I gotta think lots of PU & IU fans probably are wishing he did not leave the state right about now...

Fran has to recruit Indiana like he did with Perkis....Indiana, Purdue, Butler, Notre Dame can't take all the talent. Same with Ohio States....Greg Stokes and Aaron White.

Just watch the first few minutes of the game, and that turnover that Tony caused on a full court press when Bohannon picked up the ball and went for a layup, at 7:30 Point in the full game video, but not the game Clock.

Perkins goes right back to full court press and is clapping in the faces of the Purdue guards as they are trying to bring the ball up, and already he’s gotten into their heads, which was absolutely tenaciously audaciously epic.

Between Tony and Joe T, we have the ability to get into the heads of opposing players and more importantly, take the ball away from them. Our surge coincided with Tony stepping up in the starting lineup opposite JBo, something not everyone on this forum were on board with. Great move by McCaffery!

Perkins into the starting lineup was every bit as important as JBo moving back to the point. TP is a very tough and athletic 2 which I also believe has freed up JB for open looks.

Tony has all big-ten and all american and even NBA potential as he continues to improve. He's impressing everyone, including and especially the national media who correctly observe that Iowa's next level this season coincided with Tony's insertion into the starting lineup. Fran saw the potential and Tony rose to the occasion.

Now he has even more to prove in the tourney, and I'm sure he'll rise to those (six?) occasions too!

The mid range game is a lost art. It appears he is developing a good one. The mid range game reminds me some of Roy Marble Sr.

Whats surprised me most is his passing. Hes averaged 4.5 assists per game in the btt.

Hes not just looking to score when he drives.

Hes really playing more of the pg role than JBO is at this point. Jbo has been back off the ball more often than not.

Yeah, I think the Jordan back to PG is somewhat overstated especially in Fran's motion offense. Largely what it means is he's bringing the ball up and it's in his hands to initiate the offense. I think more importantly is he and Perkins games compliment each other well.

I’ll admit that I was confused when Perkins was inserted into the starting lineup. He wasn’t playing particularly well at the time and didn’t even get starter minutes during his first few starts. He’s turned into a very dynamic player who breaks down opposing defenses and creates good shots for himself and teammates. It will be Kris and Perkins’ team next year and it’s going to be a lot of fun to watch.

Perkins showed flashes of this last year. there are a lot valuable pieces on this team but perkins provides something frans teams often lack. perkins can drive the lane and get his shot when the offense bogs down and he can defend an athletic opposing guard. i thought he was fearless in guarding ivey and made him work for his points.

He has been great. My biggest surprise is his 3 point shooting the last 3-4 weeks. He is 9-15 since February 25th. Even if he can stay around a 40% 3 point shooter over the next year it will be huge. Allows next year when he and Joe or Ulis are in together they are that much harder to guard. Helping off one play won't kill an offense but off of two makes difficult.

Tony's game reminds me of Westbrook's, not that Tony is nearly that good, but that both are about the same size (6'3"), both are very strong and fast, and both can jump out of the gym. Tony has always been a good defender but he has been coming on strong as a scorer, taking over when he needs to. He's not sfish, almost deferring too often. He is decent at rebounding and running the team, but he's just learning. Not sure where he'll end up as a scorer but he sure has some surprising plays at times. Love that he is getting more confident.

He’s pretty darn good at taking it to the hoop , so closing out hard isn’t always a good idea as he can blow by the defender. This opens his 3 point shot which I think is still a work in progress. It’s been great lately and has given him confidence in shooting it and making it. Next year watch out he could be pretty special

Sounds like the Murray twins.
Id say Frans gotten quite a few under the radar forwards that turned put very good, I was thinking guards. Probably should have been more specific.

In my lifetime Iowa has had very few guards who can put the ball on the deck, blow by the defender and finish above the rim.

Love Tony Perkins. Plays with a chip. Is not afraid and leads the team to play that way. Great offensive roundness and defensive tenacity. Is a bit mechanical with the dribble, but it hasn’t been a problem, so far. Doesn’t overdribble.

His change of speed yesterday was eye opening for me. He schooled his defender and I think this is going to get him on first team all big this year especially if he can also hit the 3.

Murray twins weren't even close to 3 stars coming out of HS.
They were given 3 stars by Rivals when Rivals evaluated them during their prep school year. I agree that they were unranked as seniors in Cedar Rapids.

Gotcha - correct. Their improvement from HS through their year of prep school alone was amazing. What they have become since Senior at Prairie to now is almost unheard of with the jump they made.

now would be a good time to bump the
"why are we giving the murray twins scholarships! fire fran!!!" thread :)

If that game is any indication of how he's going to look going forward, then he's the best guard to play under Fran.

My comment about the Murray twins was intended to emphasize how in one class, Iowa got not one, but three under-the-radar players that have developed into the kind of athletic, all-around scoring and defensive threats that Iowa almost never has on its roster. I think Perkins is every bit in the same class as the Murray twins. I am excited to see what Kris and Tony do this year.
