PMac gone for a bit

You never really know how things you say and do can impact others. Sure, it sounds like PMac has been dealing with stuff since HS (per Connor) and I’m sure all the stuff around his cancer played a role and he just might be naturally wired for it anyway.

It’s still perfectly OK to not be an a-hole on the internet.
Of course it is. But we all run into aholes. And that opportunity is 100 fold behind a screen. Players should do what they can to not let them look to twitter for validation of any sort, because unfortunately it’s more likely it will cause more harm than good.

Anxiety is a different conversation and I was just move off of putting blame on toxic things said online. This issue likely is way more complicated otherwise someone like himself would have found a solution already. Hope Pmac finds a good game plan to overcome it.

I respect Pmac for doing what he has to, to address his anxiety. And I’m sure it’s legit and not simple to understand the cause.

But to suggest some are struggling with anxiety because of what strangers on the internet are writing about them… well to me that is crazy. Negative or positive, it shouldn’t be anything they allow on their radar. Interact a little on Twitter if you want to give back to supporters sure, but there’s no benefit from spending time reviewing what people they haven’t met are saying. You would only go after that if there was something else wrong already and you were trying to fill some void.

I don’t blame players for wanting to call out some of that stuff. But they really should do what they can to not let it affect them whether it’s positive or negative, care about what your peers, family, and leaders think… not the internet.
I agree that Patrick's anxiety is probably not being "caused" by social media, but some of the crap I have read about Fran showing special treatment to his sons, for example, certainly can't help. Anxiety and other mental illness is way more complex, and I suspect Patrick has been and will be getting help from professionals, who will look for root causes and make suggestions how to address the problem. As others have said, this is likely a problem that Patrick will need to deal with for a long time. He is fortunate to have a really great support system around him. We can't help much, but sometimes a few bad or good words can exacerbate or improve what the person is experiencing.

Well when Margaret tells Fran her sons aren't playing enough there's a lot of smoke here. You ever notice there's always a McCaffrey on the floor at all times. Connor started over a lottery pick 2 years ago. Patrick started over Kris all of last year. I have a hard time buying that those two decisions aren't heavily weighed by Connor and Patrick being Fran's sons. I'm certainly not the only person on this board that believes this. Maybe you're proving one of the posters correct that Patrick needs to transfer if he can't handle the crititism that comes with being the coaches son.

I somewhat agree with what you are saying, but it isn't quite as simple as you make it. Keegan should have been getting starter's minutes by the end of the season two years ago. He was probably the third best player on the team as a true freshman, and Connor wasn't healthy (but not as good anyhow). Last year, Kris was still pretty inconsistent, but was overall, probably better than Patrick. There was something more to consider, given Kris was the only real viable back up at 4/5, and was foul prone at times. Regardless, this can't help Patrick's anxiety, especially when some even suggest that Fran's sons aren't worthy of being in the rotation, which is nonsense.

So, you guys believe that Margaret calls the shots in the Mac household? She was probably the best BB player in the family.

You’re joking, right?
No I'm not. I have seen zero comments attacking Pat for stepping away from the team, It's been a long time since I have heard anyone ridicule another person for being depressed. I don't know a single person who looks down on people struggling with mental health. Stigmas attache to mental illness are at this point mostly imagine and are a relic of the past. For being such a stigma it is openly discussed ALOT.

Maybe you had better check out Twitter before making wide, sweeping generalizations. Let me guess, Twitter doesn’t count, right? You wouldn’t want your narrative ruined. Piss off

You are very angry for literally no reason.
I think he's right.....there still is a stigma associated with mental illness. I think it has significantly declined in recent years, but it's still there.

I think things like PTSD with veterans, and the pandemic, etc. have made it more a part of the mainstream discussion and been more widely acknowledged, but there's still a stigma. Fortunately it is getting better.

"Can't handle" in your statement makes it sound like your calling him, soft or weak. You do realize I hope that what he's dealing with (anxiety), is a disease, much like obesity is for many people who have it. Its not like you just suck it up and move on. For many people it takes therapy or medication or both. You'd think the conversation by many around the country would have shed some light, for those who are unaware, but maybe not.

That's what I responded too. If criticism about being the coaches son is affecting Patrick's mental health/anxiety then wouldn't transferring help with Patrick's mental health/anxiety?

I wouldn’t call it angry. But you literally have no idea what you’re talking about.

I had undiagnosed depression for 20+ years, even tried to end my own life. So go ahead and ask me if there’s still a stigma around mental illness.
I've had the same issues for 30 years and take meds and done a lot of therapy. There is a stigma about mental health and I've seen it up close. I agree with you 💯

Understanding that this wasn't necessarily your statement,..

Any criticism resulting from Patrick simply being the coaches son is invalid, unwarranted and totally unwelcome. Same goes for any other father/son athletic situation...

I have been really pleasantly surprised with the comments I have read on these boards...almost all supportive.

I have only read one ignorant comment....about maybe he should transfer if he doesn't like the pressure of being the coaches kid...or something like that.

I use the term ignorant because that is just what it is....someone who obviously doesn't understand the issue of dealing with Anxiety. Would Patrick be affected by criticism of he and his dad/coach....certainly that could contribute to the anxiety....but that isn't what this is about. It is only one small part of it. That's my ignorant opinion anyway.

yeah, PMac transferring was a weird take

I guess I am fortunate. I have been depressed maybe 2 days in my life. And don't think I have anxiety, but do wake up in the night these days and start thinking about things that may go wrong! LOL
Anyway, it is hard for me to understand this illness. My son has been on anti-depressants for > 20 years tho, so know it is real.

Diseases like cancer people understand. You oftentimes see GoFundMe's started up.

Diseases associated with mental illness? Unfortunately, people oftentimes don't know what to say or do.
