This is actually a perfect post to illustrate what the poll is asking vs. where people’s heads go.
1) The poll is not asking if you had the ability to wish cancer on someone, would you. Rather it is you find out a HORTer you hate has cancer, would you express empathy for them? Or would you say meh, who cares…glad they’ll be gone.
2) Your focus on anonymous is exactly what I think the conundrum is. If it’s someone you know personally, the answer is likely very easy. You’ll have empathy. But if it’s anonymous person, especially one you don’t like, does it change your perspective?
3). Finally, you went right to politics as the reason. I see people hating each other on here for lots of reasons. One of my favorite actual death stories is from the lounge. 73Chief and Gasser hated each other. It was born out of sports arguing but just went to a lot of places (their fans standing vs sitting arguments were eppppppppic!) but no politics since it isn’t allowed in the lounge. When 73Chief died of a heart attack, everyone was pretty empathetic but gasser was absent from any of that talk and it was clear he was happy he was gone. I found that situation to be an interesting perspective on how hateful internet people can be towards one another and it can have nothing to do with politics.
