I love Iowa wrestling but am no means an expert. So I see most have Young penciled in as starter but thought Gunther wrestled tough last year for freshman. Will it be Young for sure or will this be a tough battle between the two? Wanted to get some thoughts..

Trust me I don't even know where Gunther is from .. just a question Young's credentials are not overwhelming IMHU.. again just a question
PA state champ, Super 32 Champ, 2nd at junior 80kg this year. Lost in the last 20 sec of that match. 5th at midlands last year beatin a few well ranked guys. Seems to me Young is doing just fine.

It's gonna be a battle. Young by no means has it locked, but I would think must be the favorite.

Young scores more points. He will be the starter IMO.

UndercoverHawk is spot-on implies whoever scores the most points will be starter. However I do not believe Young’s offense can penetrate Gunther. Fans who watched the Hawkeyes last season know that Gunther is incredibly difficult to score against. That season in the inferno means a lot, especially for a freshman wrestler (much confidence). Still there is no question that Gunther must produce some points, that’s Iowa wrestling. Gunther looks like he has really added muscle and will handle 174 nicely. Brands Inc. have been working on the offensive production. Young will contest for the spot, but struggle mightily against the tested Gunther.

I think Joey will get some starts and Young will get some starts before Midlands.Whoever looks better goes on from there.
I have trouble seeing this play out any other way. I agree with PBS, you can pretty much throw out their head to head.

Gunther did more than I expected last year and I love his fight, but Young has more "upside" that will show this year.

Seeing Young in the lineup is one of the things I'm looking forward to the most this season.
Yeah Gunther battled the entire season all 7 minutes - great kid. Hope he continues to improve and gets back in line up at some point. Seems like young has a bigger upside.

Interesting take - and good point about Gunther being battle hardenned last season. We'll see...

I think, other things being equal. you need the guy with better offensive skills in the lineup. I remember being frustrated by Mike Mena in the lineup way back when. Really tough wrestler, all kinds of savvy, but just did not pull the trigger on his offense early and often. Gunther looked like that a bit last year to me. i also don't think beating Young head-to-head (if he can) is the end all-be-all. Would like to see both guys in live matches, especially Midlands, before I call TnT and instruct them what to do (wink)
I realize, of course, that PBS will not come at me because I mentioned two Illinois preps in less than wonderful light...:)

Let's remember Midlands last year. Young took 5 at 165. Gunther went 0-2 or 1-2 can't remember. Gunther had some impressive wins last year and is toug to score on but not everyone can keep winning 2-1,3-1,3-2,4-2 matches like Heil.

Gunther may have the varsity experience but Young would have improved since last year as well

This is a good question. I am equally interested in what we do at 197 w/o PD. Does anyone know where Holloway is at getting back down to 197? Coming out of HS I was expecting a huge upside from him, then with our 285 issues he was forced up has been in limbo since. Anyone with knowledge of this situation care to chime in?

If Gunther has added a ventriloquist to his arsenal it is his spot.

Pretty clear that 197 is Wilcke. I don't think Holloway sees 197 again and even if he does, he's behind Wilcke.

I love Gunther. Unfortunately for him it's going to be Young. So glad we have Gunther on the team and in the room, regardless. He could be a valuable guy.

As frustrating as he may have been, 1) he's very similar to Sorenson in terms of point scoring and 2) he was a winner, I'd kill for 174 to be that successful

Also, the fact that Young is in a real competition with Gunther is not a good sign to me. I'm assuming he's on a large scholarship amount and that alone should be a sign that we are looking at a high AA out of the gate.

I thought Gunther looked a little small at 65 last year so he must have put on a lot of muscle. I also thought he could have reached the podium if he would
have just opened up. I wouildnt question his heart or toughness but most guys that wrestle defensively are never able to change that. If he doesnt change he most likely will be a backup. Clark/Ramos is the precedent. Can he make 133?:D

He is not at all comparable to Sorensen. This does a complete disservice to how good Sorensen has been. Sorensen went 40-6, bonused at nearly over 43% as a RSFR and took 4th, and had multiple high level wins, including beating Tsirtsis, Kindig, Villalonga and multiple wins over Pantaleo and Mastriani.

Gunther went 20-10, bonused at 20% of his matches, DNP'd, and his best win was over, who, Nick Wanzek?

He is comparing Mena and Sorenson.

I think Brands will pick the better wrestler. Unless he reads this board, then he may go with the thoughts of we board people.

Seems like quite the conclusion based on message board fodder. Also not sure that Young was a big enough recruit to get “large” scholarship money. Plus Gunther scored NCAA tourney points last year so he didn’t exactly suck.

Welp. I'm an idiot. Sorry DayHawk. I'll leave my post there for my deserved mocking.

It's all good, some times we just look ahead too quickly. You were right though, if I had been comparing Sorenson and Gunther haha
