Recruiting

Prediction?

It's a pretty equal dual. Only 1 real toss up (141), and either team is going to need an upset to pull away.

Hendrickson’s a pinner so it could be an exciting dual.

If that’s how 174/184 work for the hawks I would say Brands/Plott is more of a tossup and honestly lean more towards Brands winning.

Nelson ain't beating Plott if he certs at 174 and that's even a consideration. Last I heard, it's 184 all the way.

Plott has gotten a LOT better and now has DT that he rolls with almost daily. None of us should just be acting like it's a foregone conclusion that just because Nelson beat him in 2023 it's an automatic win.

Also not a guarantee Plott beats him either. It's a toss up for sure

Smalls said on his show today that the reason Iowa is not getting recruits is because they don’t win enough? It seems “the brain” is a little foggy. Other than PSU of late who has won more? He also claims recruits won’t come now because of the transfers. I don’t think the recruits that we hope for are scared that a transfer might take their spot and wouldn’t they want to improve their team. While I agree with a lot of what he says todays show left me shaking my head

Re: winning - individual titles.

The Ferrari chase REALLY damaged our reputation in the eyes of recruits. And we continued to entertain it even after the double finger salute.

Vhsalum already said it, in my opinion it’s individual titles. Iowa has the resources, largest fan base, and the history. Other teams are doing quite well in comparison to Iowa when it comes to putting guys on top of the podium. Do I think there are other factors? Yes. But individual titles are at the top.

Last 10 years

1. PSU
2. Cornell
3. tOSU
4. OSU
5. Mizzou
6. Iowa

Last 5 years

1. PSU
2. Cornell
3. Iowa is tied here with 10 other teams at 2 champs

So in the last 5 years we are tied for 3rd in individual titles but we are getting out recruited because we don’t win individual titles. Huh?

It seems parity with individual titles is in play so should have little bearing on recruiting. I think part of the reason 5 years ago is because the stable was pretty full

You have talked to recruits and this is what they said. Ok

Tied for 3rd with 10 other programs. So top 12. Not exactly separating themselves as the place to be to win individual titles. How many kids that wrestle D1 don’t have being a national champion as their #1 goal?

So they are all going to PSU and Cornell. Gotcha

i think you should rewatch the show.

because that's not what i said on either front. i specifically rebutted 'iowa don't win enough' by saying 'outside of penn state, who has won more?'

what i did say is that they need to win more, individually, on Friday and Saturday night.

i also didn't say that kids are scared to come to iowa b/c they'll get recruited over. what i said was that this entire sequence is not likely to help the perception of current recruits.

The issue is it’s the same guy. In the past 10 years the number of athletes Iowa has recruited and put on top of the podium is ONE. And it was Spencer Lee, considered by many to have near generational talent.

That’s horrific. It just is.

Did it REALLY? Are you in or out?

Turk... I'm all in. I like the pickups of Parco, Teemer and Buchanan. This is Brands doing his job. And, with the right breaks, this is a possible title contending team. We possibly have five finalists!

Ayala, Teemer, Caliendo, Brands, Buchanan - 2 of whom are current favorites.

At the same time, I can see the warts and I can only hope that Tom is addressing them. The Ferrari situation looked bad. and to EVERYONE. Every high school coach, every elite recruit, every other college team, and a lot of college guys as well. The opinions varied from just "this is a stupid idea" to "The Brands have no morals." I might be a slight hyperbolic in saying everyone, but it didn't look good. There were Iowa boosters telling Tom not to bring AJ in. Also, everyone remembers Downey was almost on the team. And the worst part about that is - Tom did the right thing there!

Obviously, I ain't exactly Team Tommy - but I can see where the good things are, I can see what positives there are to take. I absolutely do not like chasing guys who aren't in the portal. But it also isn't breaking the rules - so i should probably get off my high horse about it. Not that I will, but i'll think about it.

The perception is going to be the perception. Hell, we all like saying Michigan Mercenaries. They earned that. OkieSt would be getting far more sh*t if Coleman were HC right now considering they clearly talked to Hamiti before he was in the portal.

So i'm willing to see where we're at. We have a team that can contend. Tom did that. I'm a Hawk fan. We didn't break the rules, so I'm here for this team.

Rambling way of saying - LET'S GO HAWKS!

It is actually two (Cory Clark), but still not good considering how many made the finals in those 10 years (more than 10).

Apologies. I rewatched the show. I think Fellers had me all excited 😆

We definitely need more champs. I will say there's a great chance that Covid robbed some individual titles along with the team title. Just knowing how great everyone was wrestling and feeling. But that doesn't change the fact the Hawks need more champs.
