WrongIt absolutely does. Someone can't restrict your right to free speech if what you are saying isn't threatening, abusive or causing a disturbance.

You a jealous poor?Let’s see…SEP and Ankeny. 99% chance the fans and students were complete buttholes. Good choice to clear them out.
You a jealous poor?
#MidwestRichI have a 3 stall garage.
Apples and Oranges. (kids vs professional sports)I bet you’re a blast at a sporting event 😂. Can you imagine Bryce watching LeBron play a game with his fan base yelling “foul”.
Imagine the amount that criminal, derogatory, offensive “foul” word is yelled there. I’m surprised Laker fans are allowed to attend games anymore.
Well you will get it. Most venues have rules of conduct that can be quite arbitrary and if it is thought you are violating them you can be removed. If you refuse to leave you are potentially trespassing. Not one person here wants you here or wants your opinion.
Yes they can, it might not be a prudent move, but it can be done.Disagree. Rivals can kick you off this website for anything they want. You can get fired from your employer for saying you like the Iowa State Cyclones. The constitution and Bill of Rights protects us from the government. It does not protect you from other individuals and private companies. One could argue that the school district is a governmental agency, but they are allowed to put in protective measures for the safety of the kids. If there was any hint of violence at the meet, the school district’s rights trump those of individuals. Frankly, people have no constitutional right to attend a wrestling meet. That is a privilege and that privilege can be revoked. The school could ban attendance for the rest of the year if they wanted.
I also officiated for many years, and yes at times you do come across some pretty terrible fans. I personally never kicked out a fan, but did once eject a coach. Anyway, this official will have to answer to the association for his actions and they will look into it and determine if anything should happen with him, or the schools involved. They could suspend his license, but probably not with the big shortage of officials across the state. Fans are the biggest reason for the shortage because the way they act or verbally abuse the officials. What is really sad is that when I got out of officiating, I was one of the younger officials in the state. Young people do not want to do it because of what they see by the way people act towards them. or through experiences of volunteering for youth games and tournaments. Even at this lower-level people are terrible in the way they act, and young people do not want to deal with this, and I personally can't blame them. I will say clearing the whole gym does seem a little over the top, but then again I was not there. The state association will investigate this and determine what steps need to happen next.I don't need a safe space believe me, that crap is complete bs imho. I even originally said the ref probably overreacted, I wasn't there, don't even really care. I've just sat through (as a supervisor) for the past six years watching kids and parents act like complete idiots towards refs and opposing fans. I was making a general statement regarding the actions of fans at high school events. Watching/supervising the sporting events should have been one of the best parts of my job but instead it became one of the worst. Constantly having to approach fans and ask them to improve their behavior just got old real quick. Again, you make fun of a ref that's terrible but these are the only people that will do the job because of the crap they have to take from fans. Not sure how it is in IA but for football a couple years ago we had to start playing games on Thursdays and Saturdays because there aren't enough officials these days. First year it was one game each, it was up to two last year.
The referee exercised his 1st Amendment rights and said ‘get out’You are absolutely wrong. Police officers can only give law abiding citizens lawful commands. Please stop arguing with me about this. The people last night had committed no crimes and weren't being disruptive unless like I said earlier, saying stalling is disruptive.
If someone threatened the ref or was being aggressive or committing some other crime the ref could have the police remove them or arrest them. There wasn't anything like that happening. They were yelling stalling.
This is America and we ALL have rights and a terrible ref or a tyrannical AD can't infringe upon our rights without consequences.
The only way the Police Officer can tell anyone to stop saying something is if he or she feels that the words are causing a disturbance and then they would still have to justify it to their superior and the court. Saying or yelling stalling at a wrestling meet doesn't meet that threshold in any way.
Lol, nobody's free speech rights were violated there. The referee exercised his 1st Amendment rights and said ‘get out’
Whose rights won? Looks like the ref.
Was he right? No idea. Free speech isn’t free from consequence.
Yelling stalling at a wrestling match doesn't break ANY rules of conduct. If they remove you unjustly, there can be consequences.Well you will get it. Most venues have rules of conduct that can be quite arbitrary and if it is thought you are violating them you can be removed. If you refuse to leave you are potentially trespassing.
If one was to say something derogatory and/or hate speech, what law would/could be enforced by the officer?Bryce, the gym was cleared because the ref said clear the gym. It was ridiculous but he has that power so whatever. What concerned me more was a Police Officer telling people they couldn't yell stalling at a wrestling meet. That is not a lawful order and can not be enforced by a Police Officer, period. It wasn't abusive, threatening or hate speech and it wasn't derogatory to anyone so it could never be enforced by the officer, the Ankeny PD or the Polk County attorneys office. And ultimately that is where it would end up if push came to shove.
Say a parent sues the ref and school for being removed and not being able to witness their son wrestle a varsity meet. Who wins then? The referee exercised his 1st Amendment rights and said ‘get out’
Whose rights won? Looks like the ref.
Was he right? No idea. Free speech isn’t free from consequence.
Harassment, disorderly conduct. If one was to say something derogatory and/or hate speech, what law would/could be enforced by the officer?
I’m hoping you aren’t arresting folks for violating “hate speech laws” or being derogatory.Harassment, disorderly conduct.
It was a stupid thing for the ref to do IMO, but that doesn't mean anyone's right to freedom of speech was violated.Say a parent sues the ref and school for being removed and not being able to witness their son wrestle a varsity meet. Who wins then?
As I have said previously, nothing threatening, abusive or harassing was being yelled by anyone. The worst things I heard were a couple ankeny fans yelling at the SEPolk coach to sit down and the SEPolk kids yelling stalling and scoreboard. The ref was having a mental episode or something and lost his mind because people cheered and he cleared the gym.
Part of your challenge is your verbiageYelling stalling at a wrestling match doesn't break ANY rules of conduct. If they remove you unjustly, there can be consequences.
The point that I have been trying to make, with no one listening is that I had the problem with the LE Officer telling people they can't yell stalling at a wrestling meet. He absolutely can not do that. It is not a lawful order by him as no laws are being broken. Law enforcement Officers can not enforce policies or rules, only laws. If the ref or ad wanted someone removed they would have to trespass them. Then the Officer can step in. If the Officer determined you were causing a disturbance you could be removed but again he would have to be able to justify that to his superiors.
Regarding your interpretation of the first amendment? No I was not wrong. I was not responding anything you said about the LEO and what he did or did not do.Well, you're wrong.
Please read the thread, no one said the ref violated anyones right to free speech. It was a stupid thing for the ref to do IMO, but that doesn't mean anyone's right to freedom of speech was violated.
In post #11 you said:Please read the thread, no one said the ref violated anyones right to free speech.
Priceless 🤣Please stop arguing with me about this.

I used to referee powerlifting meets. I haven't for a long time because it was usually an unpaid thing you did out of love of the sport. I just don't have the time to do it anymore. Most lifting organizations have some official referees or if it's not a high-level meet they will have lifters handle it themselves.I also officiated for many years, and yes at times you do come across some pretty terrible fans. Well you did. Please read the thread, no one said the ref violated anyones right to free speech.
You should look up the definition of average.I used to referee powerlifting meets. I haven't for a long time because it was usually an unpaid thing you did out of love of the sport. I just don't have the time to do it anymore. Most lifting organizations have some official referees or if it's not a high-level meet they will have lifters handle it themselves.
But yeah, my seven-year-old son had a poor game in a basketball game one time and he started to blame the referees. I stopped him short and told him those men work really hard so you kids could play a game. They don't get paid a lot son and if they were the best of referees they would be full-time employees but the NBA. So they're human beings are gonna make mistakes just like you do.
If you can't handle that, and if you're gonna blame other people for your own failures you're not gonna play. Do you understand? It was answered by a yes sir and I've never heard him really complain about referees after that.
Your average fan is horrible .
