Session III Thread

They still don't do a good enough job of calling stalling on the top wrestler, IMO

Honestly, in Gilman's 1st period I was surprised they dinged the bottom guy; both were just sitting there waiting for the other one to make a move. I would have called double-stall.

Also, by rule when Gilman pushed him out of bounds at one point it should have been a stall on him.

But I agree that stallling calls have been better this year

How many offensive points has Sorenson given up this year? I can't think of any other than Zain. Did Sueflohn get him at the Midlands maybe? His defense is impressive and he knows there aren't many guys that can score on him. He's so efficent when he gets to the leg that he's like a sniper. One shot, one kill and he picks his opportunities very carefully. Like it or not, he's very effective.
Sueflohn got a td in the dual meet

Interesting tidbit --- at 157, Nolf's next opponent is 15 seed Walsh from Rider, who has scored 11 pts. in each of his three wins, including against #2 and #7 seeds
Interesting stuff.

That trend is going to change in a hurry, unfortunately.

Did anyone see the Hall Garrett match? Did Hall have Vaseline on the back of his legs. Is that why they stopped the match early

If true, then why not score more? Lower the risk of getting caught in a scramble late and losing.

Cooper in a shot, but Matthews comes around and now tilts Cooper to his back.

This will be challenged. It's a 6 point move for Matthews unless they call it an illegal hold.

You guys are being too easy on Sorenson. We got ourselves another M*/Evans. Great job getting the W, but as most on here always say "win by the close match die by the close match." Seen it way too often.

In theory I agree with you but Collica had to beat both Tsirtsis and Mayes to get here. He is wrestling pretty damn well
No doubt Collica is wrestling well, but style and match-ups often trump how well a guy is wrestling. I like this match-up stylistically for Brandon. Collica isn't going to out-quick him for a blast double like I'd fear from Mayes. I'm not thinking of seeds, either. First, Collica is better than 11, IMO. I don't consider his win over Mayes much of an upset. Still, would rather see him than Mayes.

Cooper working an arm bar in the second period, but can't turn him. Matthews escapes and it's 7-0 now.

Cooper shoots, but Matthews comes out of it and gets the TD. Now leads 9-0.

Cooper doesn't have the horse power to pull off the cowcatcher. I think he'd be better off "running it to the butt" to get the guy to sit then running it over.

Yeah M*/Evans except Brandon is going to win national titles.

Cooper sure did look like a D2 Runner up. Did he want to get pinned? Way to go out Mr!

It's stale and old....we need a better assistant... No surprise they wrestle like him as that's who he probably works out with. Iowa has settled into a nice little 3-5 place national team with our current setup coaching wise. Wrestling is and has changed, we need athletes, we have a lot of kids who can wrestle but they have cement shoes and move like a turtle

Not every wrestler can have the same Metcalf/Ramos/Brands style. You can be successful in different ways. I agree wrestling is changing but kids need to be coached to their abilities. I love aggression but Sorensen is going to win 1 point matches, thats just the way it is.

I'd like to see him widen the gap on guys, but it's hard to argue with his results. He's already on pace to put together a much more successful career than either Ryan or Mike, so that's a poor comparison.

Iowa fans always want to see our guys pile up the points, but I don't think it does anyone any good to piss and moan about a sophomore who placed 4th as a freshman, has one loss on the year by 4-point decision to one of the nation's most dominant wrestlers, and has a great shot at the finals.

High expectations are great, but I'd like to think Iowa fans are more interested in supporting their guys than bitching 24/7 about every conceivable negative aspect of the program.

We're a spoiled bunch.

Briiliant. Go back to the basketball board.

This team needs to work on rolling around on scrambles because they stink in them. Any kind of funky mat guy and we look clueless. Some of the moves we get caught in, smh. Not to mention we never hit these or even anything as crazy as a cradle on anyone else. Out of the major teams we have the most limited big move repertoires.
