Soldier Salute Session IV Thread

I don't think el dub is being sarcastic...just trying to figure out how the fans simultaneously hated the guy and cheered for him the entire tournament. I must admit that I'm a little confused by this as well.
Pretty easy. They appreciate, talent, and good hard wrestling, despite his history. Clearly their approval validated no bias coming into the event.

Then when his history followed him to the present, and he acted like a complete moron, they voiced their displeasure.

What bigger indictment can you see when the crowd gave him the benefit of the doubt and cheered, only for him to poison it to a cascade of boos.

My credit to the crowd who showed proper discernment.

I have an opinion that I don’t think will be met well at all, but screw it.

I think I’m a well reasoned poster and I know I understand the sport. I think we saw tonight why de facto wrestle offs are no longer being held in public.

When Caleb beat VV3 and yelled I beat him every single fing time and I want my spot, then Caleb flexes on Anthony, slaps his chest and yells it’s my ****ing spot. There’s a lot of emotion in this sport. There’s only one spot and often times margins are slim. You have the recipe for fireworks.

Flash forward to Aj vs Glazier. Glazier is a senior that has bided his time, improved year after year, and has wrestled damn well to this point in the season. His match tonight was pry looked at as a de facto wrestle off. I don’t condone AJ’s actions but I sure see how he got there. Imo, that wasn’t the best officiated match. I thought Aj pushed the action for the entire first period. When Zach did start pushing that’s all he did. I don’t know if I saw an offensive move his entire match. After the second stall aj wasn’t happy. I’m not sure I would have been either hearing all the shit that was being said to him Aj wins and snatched Zach’s goal from him, in Zach’s mind. Zach gets mad and acts up. Here comes the part you might not like to hear, I’ve seen worse crap happen in a locker room then what happened tonight. If that same match happens in the wrestling room, you get a push, a bit of talking and nothing else.

As I said I don’t condone what Aj did, but I kinda get it. Again, I’ve seen fights in almost every locker room I’ve been a part off. This is a combat sport and there are 30 people vying for 10 spots. Things like this happen.
There is literally no other room in the country that is this dysfunctional. These guys hate each other.

Ferrari boot lickers before today: I’m ok with him coming in with very specific guidelines for behavior.

Ferrari boot lickers after he takes a swing at a guy and is facing suspension for flagrant misconduct, before even being enrolled in school: Well his fist wasn’t fully closed and it didn’t land. So not a big deal.

Oh, and a guy was excited and flexed. So there.

Fantastic.
So those who don't think like you are boot lickers. Interesting? And why does he have more very specific guidelines than anyone else on our team? Shouldn't they all be held to the same standard? Or are we biased and have separate standards for the ones we don't like?

Rather this happen now with AJ then at a more important event or when he was an actual Hawk. Tom went to bat for them and AJ blew it all up in one night.

I don’t have an issue with what happened in Anthony and Rathjen’s match. Wrestlers pushing each other, news at 11. When Rathjen got in his face and flexed, Anthony took it like a man.

All AJ had to do was pat Glazier on the back smile at even the ones who are booing him, accept his trophy and move on.

The family needs to have a reckoning with AJ and hold him accountable for his actions. Either they do and Angelo stays or they don’t and go somewhere else. Angelo and Anthony are not AJ.
Dude, they are all assholes. If you can't realize it by now, you never will.

Im sorry i disagree. That kid has had to watch others go and all the hype around ferraris had to wear on him. I totally get it and love it by him
I'm sure you're a great guy, but that statement sounds somewhat hypocritical, like you have a standard for Ferrari's and then for everyone else. I know that's not what you're saying but it does look that way...

I must have missed Gabe swinging at a prospective teammate or giving the Iowa coaching staff and the Iowa fans the finger. You can rationalize all you want but this was not AJ’s altercation. Tom took a huge chance and it has not gone well. Desperation often leads to bsd results.
Where did I say Gabe took a swing at anyone or that Gabe gave anyone the finger? You're reading what you want to read vice what I wrote. And what do you mean "this was not AJ's altercation?" I completely disagree; this was AJ's altercation and he needs to be accountable for his actions. Perhaps a match or two suspension if/when he does join the team? I don't know. But I'm not going to kick him off the team for giving the bird or for getting into a pissing contest that resulted in a swing and a miss following a hard fought match.

See, now that I didn't see in the Soldier Salute video feed from BTN+. And had I seen it I would in no way be OK with it. But at the same time I'm not dreaming of throwing a kid off the team for a heat of the moment, knee jerk reaction as felonious as double fingers to the crowd. That said, this is why TnT get paid the big bucks. I will trust that they either develop AJ into a stellar Hawk or release him from the team. But I'm not dreaming of releasing anyone for giving the bird, single or double. Not happy with it, but not going to kick him off the team.

One of the Hawks at the time I used to love watching, Sam Stoll, got into trouble with law enforcement and was "formally charged with 'false report to public entity.' The simple misdemeanor charge can result in up to 30 days in county jail and a fine of up to $625." That said, I don't recall anyone giving one of my favorite wrestlers at the time the boot for said charge. So all I'm asking for is some perspective. What's the maximum sentence for giving the double bird during the heat of the moment at Soldier Salute? One match suspension? I don't know. But I do know I don't want to piss away a chance at an NCAA champ because he's got anger issues. Hell, we're talking about wrestlers; I wish we had a few more with anger issues on our team. Kidding of course, but you get my point.

you’re speaking like he hasn’t had chance after chance after chance. and never once has he apologized or owned his mistakes. you can’t help someone who refuses to be helped.

This.
AJ shit the bed for sure. If he was on the team, he’d be suspended or booted. I feel bad for the kids who had to see the reaction from AJ and the fans.

Best case scenario is Anthony and Angelo in and AJ out. Anthony has bonded with teammates and worked hard to get eligibility.

It’s amazing to watch rationalizing happen in real time. Why did you leave out the part when AJ gave the bird to the crowd?
Friend I can only see what BTN+ shows me on the video. I saw where he gave the bird to his opponent and then he went off screen. That said, when I did hear about it I acknowledged it and gave my thoughts (none of them good) about his actions. Clearly something needs to be done, but I'm absolutely opposed to him not becoming a Hawk because he gave the crowd the bird in the heat of the moment. But I'm good with whatever TnT decide; they know much more than I do and get paid the big bucks for making the big decisions.

I'm not disagreeing with anything you said, though can honestly say I don't know what chance after chance after chance he's had. I only know - at least I think - that he appears to have anger issues that need addressed. If TnT can make it work, good. If not, I'm sure they'll do what's best for the Hawks. Not aimed at you or anyone else, but I just refuse to jump on the anti-Ferrari bus based on what I've read thus far. TnT know far more than me and they still seem to be willing to give him a chance as a Hawk. So why would I go against them?

As someone with family members who are addicts and I myself who has had some legal problems in the past, you don’t just give up on people. Help them learn and grow. This is about as embarrassing as a debut as AJ could have had but you guys having zero leeway is insane to me. He can still have his redemption.

‘Not giving up on him? Brands has went out of his way to give this guy a shot and he doesn’t even have one foot in the door before removing his wiener, doing the splits, and pissing all over it.

Yeah, definitely not a good showing. I'm still hopeful as I've only seen limited stuff on AJ but some of you more steady and knowledgeable posters are making me lose hope. I just want the best for our program and will trust whatever path Brands decides to take. Like you said in another post, he's not yet a Hawk so this might be then end of that journey before it started.

Ironside should have been put out to pasture years ago but this should be the final straw. Yeesh.

while i disagree with this sentiment, i do agree that he needs to be better prepared for these broadcasts. i caught about 5 min of the broadcast friday, where he asked Grace who's this McNeil that Grace kept talking about. Grace replied, he's a returning AA and rated around 5th or 6th. woods vs mcneil was the tournaments biggest potential national match up.

AJ has no business being in an Iowa singlet. Ever.

SOMEONE talk me down!!! WTF just happened!?!?!??! This is a 5 alarm fire, and we are at DEFCON 10!!!! Why, WHY wrestle AJ here? What was there to win? I hope I am over reacting but I am not seeing any light right now!!!

Hoping there is some kind of plan that TnT have but I certainly do not see one? What do you do for next event? I guess sit AJ IF he is even on the team after that sh*tshow??? We can not afford to lose the younger ferrari, AND somehow have to pick up more TOP recruits!?!?!?

F*CK!!!!

The problem isn't that Brands had Glazier and Ferrari wrestle the match. The problem is that AJ Ferrari has a broken ego and no emotional control. He'll continue to behave this way until he either is actually held accountable for his actions, or preferably, the people close to him in his life (his family, coaches, etc.) make it unambiguously clear that his behavior is completely intolerable and unacceptable.

Inexcusable. Teach restraint and self control. The wrestlers appear to be a reflection of their coaches. These guys need to be shown examples of elite combat athletes who have self control and respect for their opponents. GSP is one example. There are plenty of others.

Quit trying to act like the next Conor McGregor or Logan Paul.

The mental game is important. Impulse control is important. I was one of Desanto's biggest critics after his Micic match. It's impressive and admirable how he developed and grew as a man to control his emotions and respect his opponents. He had setbacks, but I don't recall any his senior season or as a graduate.

Wrestle offs were public for years without issue. Competition hasn't changed. There's always going to be some heat and maybe some lines crossed. That's ok. As long as it's addressed and corrections are made.

Humility needs to be taught, encouraged and valued. You can be humble while also being hyper competitive. Countless athletes have done it. You can even be cocky and egotistical. What you can't do is repeatedly cross the line and disrespect your opponent, teammates, or community. Especially when you're already on your 4th chance.

Was this before the Glazier Ferrari match? What the **** are these reporters doing? None of them even ask about Ferrari's post match antics? Please tell me I'm missing an interview. If this wasn't asked by the reporters and addressed by Brands, that's egregious incompetence by both.
Exactly what I was thinking. I wanted one of them to ask the hard questions about AJ. Instead they avoided any difficult questions and asked about some things not at all important or interview worthy at this stage. I'm thinking perhaps Brands told the reporters in advance to not even go there. That said, Brands clearly stated that "it wasn't all rosie" and that they've got to work some things out. Below is a link to an interview with Brands talking about ADS a few years ago. Based on his dialogue in the interview I don't think AJ's going anywhere just yet. Just like Brands said about Austin, I think Brands is thinking we do need AJ and we do need Angelo, and AJ, if he becomes a Hawk, is going to spend a match or two watching Glazier beat Allred (would love to see that) and perhaps Joles. Really curious to see how it unfolds. And no, I'm not saying AJ's post match antics from today were synonymous or comparable with ADS' from years past. I'm just making a deduction based on the Brands' interview regarding ADS, specifically the part about how bad we needed ADS, and inferring the same need for the Ferrari's. Would love to see AJ control his emotions and become a national champ for the Hawks.

I don't think he did; he's just jaw-jacking. That's why it's worth paying $14.99 to BTN+ so one can actually watch what really happened before running their mouths. I'm telling you right now, if we lose the Ferrari's this entire anti-Ferrari crowd is going to be crying puppy dog tears and hating TnT next year because we're once again not competitive. I watched Gabe put on a much bigger flexing demonstration than anyone and I loved it. Good for him; he's a fired up college kid! 149 Ferrari didn't do anything wrong and was the much bigger - by a long shot - person in defeat than Rathjen was in victory.

And as for AJ, I just got done watching that match and the post-match shit. I haven't read all the posts yet, but if, once again, one actually watches the video one will see that it was Glazier was every bit involved in the post match activities as AJ. In fact AJ did the typical "I just won and now I'm going to push you and your head down because I can" maneuver, which ignited Glazier (which I loved seeing), which in turn ignited AJ. And that "punch" that caused the DQ wasn't half as close as I saw in the Rocky I - Rock IV movies. That missed Glazier by at least 6 inches. It was more of a FU throw, followed by a FU finger. So in the end, I think the FU finger was the worst thing I saw.

I beg those of you who haven't watch the video to please do so. The horror stories you're being fed aren't as bad as you think. And all the shit against the 149 Ferrari is just that, shit. That kid pushed in response to Rathjen's push and again was a much better loser than Rathjen was a winner. And I don't hate Rathjen; I'm glad he was fired up. But if you're going to point a finger please watch the video so you know where to point your finger. As for AJ, I think he wrestled like shit against Glazier...and kudos to Glazier for not taking any shit and keeping it close. But the post match activities were pretty weak. Yep, weak fist thrown and yep, very blatant "you're number one" finger was also thrown. But again, all pretty weak.

Some of you younger guys, please Google TnT matches from their college days, and read some of the shit their opponents said about them, and then come back and tell me how bad it really was tonight. We need to focus on controlling the emotions (a little), keeping the fire hot and room competition even hotter, and doing what it takes to make this team better. Try to see the good side of our team and don't focus on what others want you to see or think. Are you men who see what you see and make your own decisions or are you f'ing ants who wander through life following the ant in front of him.

If one didn't like Gabe (and how could you not like Gabe), one could have easily gone the f**k off the reservation WRT his post match antics, flexing, etc. But for the most part nobody did because he's Gabe and we love the guy.

Look at all the extracurricular shit you see when watching college or pro football games; there's nasty shit happening numerous times each game and nobody's getting thrown off teams and the fan bases aren't asking for their $10m/year cornerbacks, linebackers and safeties to be kicked off the team because they gave somebody the finger or threw a punch or acted like dicks. It's just the heat of the moment. And those guys aren't nearly as up close and personal for the same continuous duration as the fellas on the wrestling mats. We need to be better fans. I mean this is wrestling after all. Just my very wordy two cents.

No one is going to take your seriously when you compare Gabe Arnold's post match flex to AJ Ferrari throwing a slap and flipping off his opponent and the entire arena while doing the splits. In his first competition in a HWC singlet after recently have a sexual assault case dropped and nearly killing someone in a car accident.

Nah, Rathjen gave him a little shove after the final whistle blew. It wasn't much but as amped up as he has been he may have added in a colorful comment as well. Anthony got up and gave a more aggressive push in the back but Rathjen definitely initiated the post-match pushing.

Can someone link this shove that Rathjen allegedly initiated? I didn't see anything that I'd define as a shove. I could've missed it though.

Thank you for posting this, my friend. I just finished watching college football...saw much more egregious post play interaction during that game than what I saw from Glazier and Ferrari. Again, I didn't appreciate the finger or the punch that completely missed, but it's heat of the moment stuff. We need to not do it, but I think some of our posters are going a bit overboard with the "that's it; he needs to go" talk. If he joins the team we need to do what we can to make him a better teammate.

What game were you watching where you sAw more egregious post play interaction than flipping off the entire arena?

while i disagree with this sentiment, i do agree that he needs to be better prepared for these broadcasts. i caught about 5 min of the broadcast friday, where he asked Grace who's this McNeil that Grace kept talking about. I genuinely like Ironside and appreciate the insider info he brings, but he's said some bone-headed shit the past two or three broadcasts. He was absolutely tone deaf this weekend and as you mentioned, needs to start doing research before he shows up. Cringe-worthy.

If he can't do that then someone else needs to step to the mic because this has been by far his worst season I can remember.

What game were you watching where you sAw more egregious post play interaction than flipping off the entire arena?
I meant the jaw jacking and pushing/shoving, etc., that occurs at the end of some of the more aggressive tackling/hitting plays. I didn't see any fingers today though did some research and saw where an NFL QB was fined $12k and flagged for unsportsmanlike conduct (15 yards) for flipping off the opponent's sideline. No release from the team or suspension. I'm not sure the bird is considered so egregious though it's clearly very inappropriate and not the standard of excellence we expect from our athletes.
