Soldier Salute updates

They think Gabe is transferring and gonna go to Okie St? I would bet any amount of money in the world that if Gabe ever transferred (which he isn’t) he would retire before going to Okie St.
No idea, and I don't mean to suggest anything nefarious. It was just noticeable that he was watching almost the whole match. Gabe was putting on a pretty good show though.

All 8 starters (incl Kennedy) in the semis +2 non-starters (Petersen & Ferrari).

Rhodes, Schriever, Voinovich & Fleshman still alive in consis (3rd-8th).

27 Iowa wrestlers entered, 14 will place.

Of non-starters, I'm most impressed with Ferrari, of course, but beyond him, Petersen & Voinovich. Most disappointed in Rathjen.

Looking forward to some good wrestling tomorrow.
Honest question. What other teams sent their starters?

Several teams sent a mix of starters and backups like UNI, MN, WY, UNC. Most weights have multiple ranked guys/NCAA qualifiers. Big improvement from two years ago. Still needs to get better but they appear to be on their way.
UNI sent 2 starters. How many did MN, WYo and UNC send? I hope for the best but only 2 or 3 teams sending their actual team is a hard sell with limited dates. You would think the Iowa brand would be able to do better right?

I don’t know. Why don’t you do the legwork instead of asking other people to do it?

Like I said, most weights have multiple ranked wrestlers/NCAA qualifiers. 149 and 174 are pretty good weights.

It really doesn’t work that way, that you just start a tourney and teams flock to it. Especially not in today’s world of “pitch counts.” Still a lot of room for improvement but it’s become a legit tourney in year 3.

This time of year is a shaking out period and most seasoned starters don’t need the grind this time of year. There is no other tournament right now doing any better.
These tournaments are good for teams/wrestlers/coaches that need or want the work, they will never be much more then that nowadays.

Curious what impressed you about Peterson? I don’t know anything about the kid he beat in the quarters but doesn’t seem like a kid we should be losing to the majority of the match and beat cause we caught him. The only non staters that I thought looked pretty dang good yesterday were Ferrari and Estrada.

Just because you say “no excuses” before stating the excuse doesn’t not make it an excuse. 🤣 looked just as healthy as every other wrestler out there while scrambling with ISU.
considering Caleb is MFFing out of the tournament I think it’s okay to assume he may not be at 100%

Not saying it was an amazing win or anything but he’s a NQ and the match was tied. Solid win.

Actually Cullan going toe to toe with that Navy kid caught my eye. He just needs to push some more action early and maybe takes that match against a real top quality guy.
Big issue I see with Cullan is he has no problem getting in deep on takedowns but really struggles to finish. It just hasn't got better over the years. I seen in his first round match he again couldn't finish a shot so finally just through the guy down and jumped on top of him for 3. That just isn't going to work against good wrestlers.

Losing a close one to a National Qualifier would be impressive for a true freshman, but Schriever has been in the room a long time and still struggles on bottom and has a hard time finishing shots. He’s obviously a hard worker. He never gasses out and he’s a pretty tough rider, but that match vs Koderhandt was as good as I’ve seen him look and he still came up short.

I thought Peterson looked fine especially knowing he weighed in much lighter which was planned . You left out the fact the other guy also "caught" him, but kp fought off his back and had the energy to get back in the match. The size difference clearly factored into him getting caught also in my opinion.

IDK, it seems like Ben "isn't right" for most of his matches against decent competition. Maybe he's just not going to be a dominant heavyweight - which shouldn't be surprising considering how small he looks.
It’s a pretty unpopular opinion but I’m not sold he’s gonna be what everyone in Iowa city has billed him to be. Great multi sport athlete but he just seems undersized for the big hwts

He looked about how he usually looks. He hasn't shown he can consistently get take downs. He has trouble getting in and finishing on people. Also not a dominant rider so closer matches.
I think he had riding time? 🤣 Also, 2 stall calls, kid wouldn’t engage. Wrestled safe to get the win. Kid was also short, Ben shot 4 times, so agree on that one. Needs to finish. Hand fight, move his feet, fakes, etc.

He started at 217 last year and is up to 240. Listen, he gets a chance to adjust to D-1 wrestling, like everyone. He has 3 more years! Sure, let’s get on a message board and determine his whole future and minimize, downgrade all he has accomplished. SMH, what a puke. You know where you can shove your un educated opinions. I’m in suite 6 if you want chat about it, dumb a@@.

It seems like he hasn't put on hardly any weight since high school. I'm guessing he has but man did he look slim yesterday. I don't think he wants to be fat but jeez he could be not skinny.

Please correct me if I am wrong, but if the match was tied and he caught him for the pin, would that not also mean he was going to be up at least by 4 points if he didn't get the pin? Seems to me that just because you may be trailing or tied and then get the pin the win should not be considered to be less of an accomplishment. I agree with you - it was a solid win.

I think too many fans have an unrealistic expectation with how much these guys can bulk up while trying to get better at wrestling. Remember he played football till January last year. Then moved right into wrestling. No serious downtime to focus strictly on gaining good mass as the #1 priority. Spent last summer training for worlds and right into the college season. Gaining 20lbs is pretty good considering he’s been on the mat. Slow and steady

That’s because your view of guys putting on weight is in the 90s.

College football/NFL players aren’t putting in mass/muscle to look like body builders. Kueter has put on “good” weight. He hasn’t sacrificed speed for mass. You’re looking at what an actual NFL body/talent looks like without pads. And dude has a long frame.
