Soon to be 4 Star 2019 PG DJ Carton is visiting Iowa Sat, Aug 5!!

I want. I watched three videos. Want. Want. Want. Kid is efficient with the ball, efficient with his feet, brings some physicality, changes speeds well, passes the ball on time and on target, leads guys into easy scoring plays, and appears to play both ends—even in AAU/summer camp ball.

Want.

his on ball defense does go unnoticed...probably a natural thing...the unnoticed part. He is capable of guarding smaller guys but also bigger...that is why I think he can play along side another ball handler as well as the so-called point. He also is getting bigger & stronger..added 10 lbs since the end of soph season.

Good outside shooter but needs to get better and he has. Spends his off time in the gym...one of those that has to be told 'leave'...go home.

Yes we want (as does others like Wisc)...we got a shot with Fran the lead recruiter.

Just watched his highlights from the Wisconsin camp here:

Very impressive. He is extremely skilled and it appears as though he'd be a great asset to initiate the half court offense. In the video you see him split a double team (1.05), nicely sets up a pick and roll then makes an excellent pass (1.15), dribble drive then kick it out for an open three (0.50), uses a quick low dribble to get into the lane and make a layup (1.30).

DJ Carton is a must get in my opinion which means nothing. A couple reasons:

A. We will graduate Bohannon
B. He is an elite point guard that fits the Iowa style
C. Our rival is recruiting him hard
D. He is in our back yard. Fran has to win these battles

Side note- is it realistic that Patrick may come on as a walk-on? I can see Connor with the baseball factor. Obviously Fran knows having his son's, who are 4* recruits, as walk-on's is a HUGE advantage.

I'd suggest that Fran is going to be glad it is a short drive to Bettendorf this coming basketball season. He and Dean Oliver might as well reserve seats together to watch the games. Make some friendly bets. Talk about Iowa and how Dean was a Hawkeye. Maybe Dean can give back his Hawkeye stuff. Nah, I still appreciate the old days....But I do think there should be a rule that he can't show up in his employers team colors. To be fair, each coach should show up in Bettendorf team colors. And since Bettendorf is in Iowa, it's OK if those clothes say Iowa. (Hint, Bettendorf's team colors are pretty cool)

Maybe the whole deal should be whichever team wins in the Big Ten regular season, the other BACK OFF, so Iowa can get Carton.

I wish we had a former Bettendorf Bulldog on our team...

I wonder if Dean will drive down through Dubuque? He can tell DJ's parents all about the great drive from Madison to Bettendorf, in the winter. IF he makes it up that long freagin' hill on Highway 61.

That's the route suggested by my computer. 165 miles. Two hours, forty-three minutes...on a good day. And hey, I've driven it. There is an even worse hill leaving Dubuque heading to Madison!

I drive slow and it takes me 54 minutes from Iowa City to Bettendorf. In fact, that's taking two lanes part of the way as I like the scenic route.

I know Wisconsin has a great history the last fifteen years. Makes me nervous about how they can talk about final fours and stuff. I hope they talk about loyalty as well, and Carton can ask Jordan Bohannon about all his Wisconsin offers (zero) after two of his brothers played there. Of course Jordan only made Freshman All Big Ten.

Carton has a big decision to make. And hopefully he takes all the time he has this coming year to just enjoy playing basketball and hearing from other schools. Take the officials that'll come his way.

In a silly way, give us Hawkeye fans time to speculate and hope and enjoy the visits from Don the huge Wisconsin fan who hates Iowa and actually shows up on a Hawkeye site to pick fights.

We've got too much going for us, and we are practically Carton's neighbors. He's a smart kid. I like our chances.

Sorry, let me dumb it down a bit for you.

There will be a lot of visiting coaches at Carton's games this winter, but Wisconsin and Iowa look to lead right now.

Bettendorf's team colors are black and gold.

It is a long, miserable ride from Bettendorf to Madison in Winter. Autumn is nice.

Wisconsin never offered JBo, not even after having two of his brothers on their team (loyalty?)

If anything else is too complex don't worry about it. :)

You talk about loyalty and yet DJ was what, the 4th pg offer Iowa sent out? Doesn't seem like much of a priority. As usual, UW gets on a kid before he blows up. The last QCE kid to go to UW has done pretty good. I like our chances.

you have no idea what you are talking about Jon when it comes to DJ Carton...I guarantee you a few Iowa posters can tell you I'm 'real' close to Carton's recruitment & his advisors.

Loyalty has zero to do with it...zero. Iowa was the first...to become aware of DJ and that was before he played a single second of varsity ball... I repeat..the first. Iowa was the first to be sitting in the gym when the season started. What does that mean? Zero.

This has nothing to do with who offered first...has nothing to do with Happ & the QCE...you do know where Nicholas Baer played high school.
Loyalty?....where was Wisconsin when they took one look at Baer? You know the kid who kicked your ass last year.

Unlike you...I dont feel the need to go to your Wisc Rivals site & talk smack...how old are you? I would think your education should apply....don't you think Jon?

Where DJ goes will not be determined today because the process has just begun. Wisconsin will be in play as they should be. So will Fran & Iowa.

Sure I'd love to see the kid in an Iowa uni.. great to see all the hard work paying off...pretty neat to know your efforts have led to a paid for college education regardless of where...before you have started the 11th grade.

Keep in mind this went from a Wisconsin lean according to some (which there wasnt one) and I posted then more offers forthcoming....to now the likes of Kansas & others getting involved.

So I have never been able to contribute much on recruiting since I don't like speculating when I have no credible source. But for once I have some pretty credible information. Though I am sure there will be posters who think I am making this up but here goes.

So I was at my buddy's wedding reception this weekend here in Davenport. His younger half brother goes to Bettendorf and actually plays basketball with Carton. When I ask him if we as Hawkeye fans want Carton at Iowa, the answer is a resounding yes. But then he shares a tidbit of information with me that is very disheartening. My buddy's bro talked with Carton about his recruiting and straight up asked him about his thoughts on playing at Iowa. These were the words that were shared with me that were said to have come out of DJ Carton's mouth. "I ****ing hate Patrick McCaffery." Paraphrasing what Carton continued to say about PMac was that not a lot of kids want to play with him. Didn't give my guy a reason per se, just that Carton strongly disliked the kid.

Again, take this for what you will but my buddy's bro would have no reason to make up something like this, especially being the huge hawkeye fans that he and his family are. I want to say that from what I have read on here that PMac was well liked. I guess not by everyone.

Let the speculating begin...

Who can provide a little insight into the above report from Hawk40?

After a day and a half of silence, it may be that this subject is too hot to touch. Since Patrick is not an average recruit... from either the standpoint of skill or bloodlines... this can be a pivotal event in the future of the program. There may be a reasonable explanation: the most simple being that these are two highly competitive, very young men. Or... this could be a much bigger concern than we would care to address. The silence is a bit uncomfortable.

Not sure what you expect? Are we going to kick PMac off the team because a recruit said he does not like him according to a conversation relayed from a buddy's bro at a wedding? In the end if Carton does not want to be a Hawk so be it. He's not the only guy we are recruiting.

Cool story bro. You haven't contributed much at all not just in recruiting in the almost year and half as a member.

Unfortunately Hawk40's post resonates a bit with those butt hurt tweets a few months back in regards to another kid earning the Mr Basketball title or somehing like that. If PMac's character is truly questionable, at least he's got a few years to mature.

Hawk Central article

McCaffery boasts his own sterling credentials. He is considered the No. 31 overall player in the country, according to the latest Rivals rankings. The 6-foot-8, 180-pound forward is tabbed as a four-star prospect. Many believe he’ll end up playing for his dad at Iowa — and even bring others along with him.

“He’s just got an electric personality that people really enjoy being around it and being part of his team,” Greg Stephen, McCaffery’s AAU coach, told HawkCentral in May. “And I think, again, if he decides to go to Iowa, I think there’s people that will want to go there because they want to play with him.”

What's your point bro? Does it matter what I have or have not contributed in my time on here? No, it doesn't. All I did was share information that I got from a source more credible than just about anyone on this site could provide, including you. Can't get much more credible than a player who plays along side Carton and is friends with him. Guess because I haven't contributed much invalidates his credibility.
I never said he wasn't going to commit to Iowa, just that he apparently severely dislikes PMac for whatever reason and that it might hurt Iowa's chances of getting the guy. A guy people are super high on, including the guy I talked to. I thought that would be information people would like to know. But instead of responding or reacting to the credible information, you have some snarky comeback. Good for you bro. Good for you.

They obviously aren't going to stop recruiting PMac because one player said he hated him. I would hope that wouldn't be the case. Like I said in my original post, most everything I had read or heard about PMac was positive. Which is why I found it fascinating that a coveted Iowa recruit would say something so strongly about him and I wanted to share that with all of you. Like a previous poster said, these two have a few years to mature and hopefully come together because like I was told, we want this guy.

its fair to say that teenagers say & do things that are a direct reflection of being a teenager. we all know this...so that is that.

we also know that sometimes in the heat of competition.....

will simply say that Carton is a good kid & now the recruiting world knows a pretty good basketball player (been saying it for a year)...would love to see him allow Fran to help make him even better in 2 years...BUT....there are other programs (such as Wisconsin) that also have a lot to offer.

In the end it will be Carton's choice...for his own reason(s).
I trust Fran (if its not Carton)....I'm sure we will continue to see recruits that fit much in the mold of what we currently see on the Iowa roster.

Keep in mind these are 16 year old kids with an athletic rivalry. When I was 16, I hated several guys I played basketball and football against for years. Fast forward to college and beyond, several of them became good friends of mine.

These two are on high level high school teams that compete against one another, same thing with regards to AAU teams. A lot can change when they get to spend time with one another beyond just competing on the basketball court.

Why would Carton go off on why he "f'ing hates Patrick McCaffery" and say that not a lot of kids want to play with him, but not say why???

I'm not saying that I don't believe your information, just that it seems a little odd that you didn't get any real reason why DJ said what he said...

One thing for sure, it's on the world wide web now and it'll be at least known by Fran, Patrick (if they don't already) and DJ, whether true or not, and will be addressed in some manner behind the scene. Lemonade is made everyday from lemons my friends!!

I appreciate your insight, and have no reason to doubt you. I am not real sure why some are butt hurt over your comment. Ignore them.

As someone else said, it is no big deal if Carton said this. These are two ultra competitive teenagers. I hated everyone I played against growing up. That is, until they became my teammate. Then they became some of my closest friends, still to this date. It is called being competitive and wanting to beat someone. Nothing more, nothing less.

I can kind of see how HS kids would make a claim on this however so easy to change that tune. When I was playing AAU ball in 90s Iowa was when you basically played with guys from your HS or surrounding area and only had one super team with Martin Bros. I remember one team we played lot a tournaments couldn't stand half the guys on the team and thought they were aholes from playing them. Sure enough one summer at Iowa bball camp get 2 of them on my team including their best player and ended up could not have liked the guys anymore and they were good guys on and off the court and opinion of them drastically changed.

Point is maybe comment Carton makes and he doesn't really know Patrick that much and more likely disdain from playing against one another in AAU ball and both the alpha dogs on their teams. However play together be around one another like on a recruiting trip ones opinion can quickly change.

I don't think his comment about PM means much. 40 years ago I was a preferred walk on (not basketball) for the Hawkeyes.. That summer the coach told me I would be rooming with Brian -----. Brian happened to be a cross town kid that I had competed against in a variety of sports since the 5th grade. I would have used pretty much the same words to describe him that Carton used to describe Patrick. We became best of friends and now 40 years later still consider him one of my closest friends.

Man, these kids have to be very careful what they say and who's around when they say it at all times.
If I had to guess this friend of a friend of a friend of a player probably heard 12th hand something that was said and as usual it morphs into something unrecognizable from the original conversation.

Is Sweet 16 close enough to the final four success? I know it's closer than anything Iowa has done lately. Wisconsin isn't falling off any map anytime soon. It'll be UW or blue blood for Carton.

You shut your whore mouth.
