Source- Hildebrandt to F*** st.

What do you mean you think this comes down to the hired gun thing? All this comes down to is Penn State filling a hole in their lineup with a High AA, just as we did with Eierman at '41.
If it was NS it would be, he would be going to highest bidder and that’s what I was referring to. Never mind the fact that NS was already at psu and left on a sour note. Much different then JE he wanted to come to Iowa and it had nothing to do with money, as I said I have no problem with the CMU guy switching to the dark side.

This thread is freaking hilarious.

We're debating eligibility clocks when there are TWO GUYS seven years removed from high school starting for Iowa?

We're debating why a contending team would try to improve their roster at a very weak weight? The same people crying over this would be livid if Brands sat on his hands in the same scenario. I have news for you...he wouldn't! He would attempt to do the same thing. At least he better--it's his damn job.

Take your crocodile tears somewhere else. I'm embarrassed for you.

Crocodile Tears - it's a pretty damn catchy song. Good choice Spooner!

There are a few Iowa fans that seem to have an unhealthy obsession with Penn State and a desperate need to believe they are a dirty program. Figured the recent national title would have made them feel better. At least MitchL's obsession with Minnesota and ISU comes from a place of superiority.

Actually I’ve seen a pretty strong Hawk contingent that are saying “who wouldn’t?” which feels like the confidence level is higher than prior years. Hats off to the multiple posters keeping this one in check more than we’ve seen in the past.

Every coach should be looking to improve their team. He won’t beat the hawks. The hawks not finishing or not bonus beats the hawks. I think the hawks have three champs this year and win it.

I’d be thrilled to have him if I was a PSU fan, but I would be concerned somewhat. He didn’t even want to wrestle this year and if he loses in rd 2 or quarters how committed will he be on the backside?

This is wayyyyyyyyyyy better than their next best alternative so I don't get the concern.

So what you are saying is....that you hate PSU and they recruited a 125lber and they have a room full of studs who are bought and paid for and they do whatever they can to win Titles at any cost ???? Thats a HELL of a NOVEL IDEA !!!! you are a true wrestling Guru and maybe the Brands brothers should look at your posts for their plans...
What is it with people from PA??? Is the education system not very good? "do whatever they can to win a title at any cost" Do you mean within the rules, or do you mean without any regards to morals, values, sportsmanship etc......?

What I am talking about is keeping what I consider the greatest sport, and the greatest level around forever. By that I mean, College Wrestling. I like it much more then international which has gotten further away from "our" style. Once again, I only see a handful (or maybe 2), teams being able to compete. I also see a greatly reduced variety of teams with individual champions.

The amount of Wrestling programs has dropped substantially. D1 has what 80? Not liking the direction we seem to be heading. Hopefully I am 100% wrong and all this NIL BS and transfer crap etc... improves Wrestling as well as other sports. Remains to be seen but I doubt it!

you guys are in favor of dragging wrestling down to the level of football and basketball. don't care if it's suriano, hildebrant or jimmy from 7/11 it's not in the spirit of college athletics to bring in someone for the 2nd semester that has no intentions of attending class. it is very cael tho winning is the only thing

Yeah. Iowa has never done anything like that before.

When first saw this headline I was like: Shit NLWC snagged Sarah Hildebrandt. But...it was just her younger brother. Nothing to see here.
When I initially saw the thread, I thought the same thing. Sarah is my favorite female wrestler. Would love to see her at Iowa. I doubt that happens. I would prefer that she not be bought and head to F** State though.

She is awesome - her baby brother is just pretty good. He will be an upgrade for them and will get the kitties a few points at NCAAs. He isn’t a game changer like Suriano would be though - and not one of the world’s best like Sarah.

Will he wrestle this semester? The thing I don’t like is a guy like Suriano can wait until the second semester to join a team for the final part of the season. He’s honestly like a free agent hoping one of the contender 125-133 gets hurt or under performs. If that happened to iowa, penn state or whoever thought they had a chance would jump all over suriano. It would just drive up his price.
Transfers should have to be at least at the school by the start of the season unless the ncaa is the one holding them up.

oh Boy ............. Time for me to do some serious soul searching.... an internet poster from another state dislikes my post !!!! whatever shall i do ?? I mean he is the most intelligent and well respected of all people who post on this board...if you dont believe that just ask HIM.. he faults the people of Pennsylvania yet....somehow fails to realize that at any given time during the past Championship run there were FIVE or so of these Pennsylvanians starting for IOWA and their families were a HUGE SUPPORT system. I must put the same value of anything that Iron Squawk says in the same category as the stuff i scrape off my boots after I've been out working in this fine Pennsylvania soil....and it makes about as much sense.. Having an intelligent conversation with Iron Squawk is like trying to pick a turd up by the clean end....it ain't happening

She wrestles for a living. She is compensated wherever she wrestles. You just don't want her cashing a NLWC paycheck.

Refresh my memory. When did Eierman begin classes last year?
Last year? I believe he started at the beginning of the fall semester.
You're misremembering the details of his transfer. He announced said move on Nov 6, 2019 and took an Olympic redshirt and sat out a year. However, after entering the portal, he immediately moved to Iowa City and joined the HWC. He was in IC for close to a year before suiting up for the Black & Gold.

Nice try using Eierman, but they aren't even close to similar circumstances. Would you like to try again or are you fine losing this one?

I know when he moved to IC and began training...when did he enroll in classes at U of I?

well in reality it is usually pretty fertile and under the right conditions can produce some pretty tough wrestlers!! There are a few... a HELL of a lot more mountains here than in Iowa but besides the big cities most of the people are good hardworking folks...the cities are full of idiots who don't and most won't think for themselves...but thats a tale for another day !!

I know when he moved to IC and began training...when did he enroll in classes at U of I?
He showed up in the student directory in January 2020 because there were talks of him pulling the Olympic redshirt and possibly joining the team that year that ultimately didn’t happen. Not sure on enrollment but assume he was enrolled for the full 2020-2021 season.

Pretty sure he was here a year before he wrestled.

Comparing somebody who spent a year in Iowa City with the HWC before wrestling for the UofI, who also plans to wrestle long term for the HWC, to somebody who is going to show up second semester (may or may not attend any classes), wrestle one national tournament, and then be gone simply because they both enrolled in classes at the same time of year automatically shows that you aren't worth another reply.

Hey good answer, Yes your previous post that I commented on was so good I should have known you is one of the smart ones!

Most here seem to understand what I am getting at. Maybe try and follow along? As has been said, say someone like Surrianno, or how about Gable stevenson for another example. Say he said he was not going to wrestle. Then a team, could be any team, which has some slush $$$$. Makes an offer, 10K to wrestle for us. Come in 2nd semester, sign up for 1/2 a credit or so who cares!?!?!? Wrestle, and go on your way. Would this be OK for you???

No dog in the fight but I don’t see how it rises to the level of even minor moral turpitude. (But then, I might be more of a secular capitalist than many around here.)

Well if you are saying it is not a crime(?) and I am assume you mean for the kids? You are probable correct, but if you have seen what happens to sports that are driven by money only. It gets very ugly pretty fast. I use to watch the NFL religiously. I watched plenty of MLB too back in the day and even some MBA basketball. Basically do not watch any of it anymore. Would much rather watch a HS or college Football game. Do not see any reason to support what I consider organizations that continually support and do the wrong things!

Wrestling has mostly avoided the crap/garbage or whatever you want to call what goes on in those sports. I do not mind a kid such as Spencer Lee or any other that has done well enough to create a brand for themselves and can make some money. However, if teams/wealthy donors or the likes can just pay them, in any sports, this can become a problem.

I am not certain how this all plays out? I do not think anyone is? I believe it will be college football that could show first what is to become of these new rules. For example, I do not see any reason why something like SMU back in the glory days could not happen again, but now be perfectly legal. You may see this as, OK if someone wants to pay then....... But now you are destroying college sports!

No one remembers bringing in PD3?
no you see this doesn't count because he was soooo poorly behaved that he got kicked off before he could wrestle so that displays good judgment from the coaches. i mean, who could have predicted PD3 couldn't walk the straight and narrow just because he'd already been kicked off multiple college/high school teams?

bottom line, we had a hole at 184/197 and there was a national championship quality wrestler on the market. brands shot his shot. it didn't work out. oh well.

the moral grandstanding on this thread is asinine. the coaches are paid to win. part of that job is to explore every possibility to make the team better. if we didn't have desanto at 133, it would be a dereliction of duty for brands not to recruit suriano.

Just because it didn’t work out doesn’t mean Iowa didn’t try to do it. They so very clearly did. They were trying to upgrade with a hired one semester gun. Parsing that is reaching. What they did was actually worse in that he was a well established POS but they tried it with him anyway.

If Cael didn’t at least try to do this he wouldn’t be doing his job. If the shoe were on the other foot Brands would have the same obligation and we’d all be ecstatic if he were successful.
