Tennessee preparing to add 10% 'talent fee' to ticket prices to raise money to give its players

Not sure the G league thing commands the money. Schools have built in fans (students) that strongly identify with that school and related teams. Decades of history and ties. Now you throw that out the window. And a G League type deal will command that kind of money??? No way! I give you MLB triple A ball as example 1. How many of their games are on national TV and command BILLIONS?
History and tradition have already been thrown out the window by the powers that be.

Maybe the NFL could kick in some money as they benefit greatly from players going through training in college. I am sure they would say get lost to that idea.
Lolol..again thats NEVER going to happen. They have a farm system where their future stars train right now and they don't pay for it. At least the NBA has the G league for border line kids to work on their game if college isn't their thing. MLB has the minors. Its only the No Fun League that gets a pass, and they're going to have to be dragged kicking and screaming to change that...

Georgia, with the governor signing an order permitting payments, and Tennessee together are giving a giant middle finger to the NCAA. If the pathway wasn’t opened already to full on university participation in NIL, it is, or soon will be. Their function, if any, is purely window dressing. They ignored it for so long that it got completely away from them before they realized what happened. They focused on crap that didn’t matter. Low hanging fruit and didn’t address the 800 pound gorilla. Their failure to act has led to their own demise.

If the revenue sharing gets sorted out, I'd like to see Iowa do the following:

Iowa FB: 64%
Iowa MB: 9%
Iowa WBB: 9%
Iowa Wrestling: 18%

These percentages are based on the max scholarship limitations now in place (105, 15, 15, 30). If the pot of money is $22,000,000 that pencils out to an average annual amount of ~$133,000 per athlete. I included these sports only because they are the ones that draw the most eyeballs and interest from fans and Iowa has traditionally been successful in all of them.

If these athletes are smart with their money, they'll likely graduate with a nest egg of $350,000 or more after taxes just with the revenue sharing piece. Full scholarship athletes don't need to pay rent, groceries, utilities, tuition, books, fees, etc. Everything they need to survive as a student athlete is at no cost to them. They can still pursue NIL deals themselves like Caitlin, who it's speculated was pulling down $3 M in NIL.

Continue the Swarm and use that NIL donated money for the other university sports athletes. I personally would be OK with an NIL charge of $100/year to season ticket holders as well to sweeten the pot too. I do like that a component of Iowa's NIL deal requires our athletes to put in some public service in the community which is a win-win for those athletes and the nonprofits they assist.

Just a comment...I think wrestling now has a roster limit of 30, but the number of scholly's remains at 9.9. I think. :)

Honestly, I don’t see how, either. The current system is skewed heavily to about 15-20 teams… and UIowa isn’t one of them. Nor should it be.
Correct! College football is moving to the NFL model. 15 -20 teams across the country. Conferences and divisions and playoffs just like the NFL. Teams like Iowa etc. will not be part of it. They will have expansion every few years to keep colleges trying to get in just like cities try and get an expansion team now. It will cost them a fortune to get in and try and get players to stay with them. The 15-20 teams will just pluck good players along the way from teams outside the college league. There will be no SEC/Big Ten etc. conferences. Get ready because this where it is going. College degrees mean nothing for this future league.

This will not happen.

And that is when I stop buying season tickets. It was a good run, 33 years and counting. Times change but this wouldn’t be for me.
It’s disgusting. How quickly have I started to despise my favorite thing for 50 years…

I gave up tickets 3 years ago. Screw them.

It wont because there will always be college football. It do believe that college football at its highest level, will soon resemble the professional game as far as payment and buying/recruiting of players. There will be 20-30 teams of consequence….
Like my entire life.

This is the new reality. Everything will get more expensive because the $$$ for player will continue increasing over time.

No, it's a terrible idea.

The whole NIL is a terrible idea.
I agree - but it’s here and it’s not going back. We have to try and compete in the new reality. I don’t like our odds, but still have to try.

On a personal level - start a business that all these new millionaires will spend money on. A large percentage of these players won’t keep this money - it will filter through their fingers like most lottery winners do. You can win if you can find a way to catch the dollars they flitter away.

If Iowa ever does this, I will never again purchase season tickets.
As someone already suggested….use the existing seat extortion fee to pay players.
Most teams will do it, they will just call it "ticket increase" and use that money to pay players.

Ah, but mot of these "kids" aren't smart and will blow the money on hookers and blow. Soon the ticket holders will only be the elite that can afford them and the average fans will find something else to do.

Wait, where's the DEI and Equality of Outcome folks? If ever DEI and EoO is needed, it is in athletics! Every team should win a NC, and every team should have a % of the players that represent their ethnicity in the population.
