I just checked - all US states and DC have at-will employment. Can they even have binding contracts that tie players down? Not if you sign an employment contract with your employer.

This is going to start out with football, 60 some teams outside the NCAA.Bilas has advocated for player payment forever.
He never mentions the fans.
Basically he makes a great living and wants the same for athletes and does not give a fig about the customers who pay for it all.
I find him exceedingly arrogant.
He also clearly does not give a fig about non-revenue sports surviving as there is no way to pay players 6 figures and pay for scholarships for the other 300 athletes also.
I support Hawkeye athletics for the name on the front of the uni.
That is the true brand value in the sports programs at iowa to me.
Hey Jay, kill the golden goose at your own peril. May have actually use that "worthless" education to make a living someday.
Never. But they don’t play a sport for 7 years, unless they’re Jess Settles. How long before some court says athletes can play college sports for as long as they want?
Player/employee signed a contract for 3-4 years. Non compete clause and a buy out amount. If a school breaks a rule the league of 60 votes them out, cuts their TV money, suspended from post season bowl games and championship. I'm sure the SEC group of the league would vote as a block to sit Michigan out for a year.Imagine the playoff teams sweep through the non-qualifyers and cherry pick stars to fill gaps. Bwah.
If the end result of this is that a small cadre of the elite football colleges form a feeder NFL league and the rest go back to being collegiate amateurs..... where do I sign up?
In theory, the impetus to leave is leveling up to the NFL. But imagine fringe NFL players signing up for a "liberal studies" class and doing a AAA-like stint at college to stay in shape and try to work back into the league? Or someone plays a few years in the NFL and would normally have retired, but suits back up for the ol' U and the big NIL money?
They're an employee hired to be a quarterback. Just like all the coaches are employees under contract that can be renewed or terminated.I just checked - all US states and DC have at-will employment. Can they even have binding contracts that tie players down?
Someone hasn't seen Tommy Boy... or hasn't seen it in a while...But they don’t play a sport for 7 years, unless they’re Jess Settles. How long before some court says athletes can play college sports for as long as they want?
The student athletes should never get the blame here. Asking a 4 star now to sign just to get a pat on the back from Kirk is gone. Pay them their money. Blame the NCAA for their ineptitude. You are not going to stop kids from making money. You going to form a league where kids have their part time jobs regulated? Which is in theory you are trying to do by having a non NIL league.
So you have this non NIL league, let’s assume Iowa is in the non NIL league and develops a clear deluxe stud at QB, he will leave instantly for the NIL league.
All you accomplished was creating a farm system for the NIL schools.
You lose in court all day every day if you think you are going to stop a non NIL kid from transferring to a NIL school.

+1,000,000It is my opinion that had the NCAA been proactive, and worked with the athletes 10 years ago to reasonably compensate them, this would not be the clusterfvck it currently is.
Instead they dug their heels in, even though it was clear this would eventually happen to anyone with an ounce of foresight.
They have no one to blame but themselves. The legal system is just doing what it does, like it or not.
Disagree. This was always going to be a loser in the courts at some point.+1,000,000
The NCAA chose not to be pro-active. They chose to let the process play out and they lost. The NCAA should be dissolved, they have zero power or credibility. This is all because of their lack of foresight.
And it will happen in D3, I’m fairly confident it already is. Some of the private D3 schools have significant alumni/boosters to make payments happen. High schools are next.
Yes, but with the rise of online classes, it's become much, much easier.OK please don't chastise me for my ignorance but... since NIL I have not heard of an athlete that transferred being academically ineligible. I understand that college football is becoming the feeder system for the NFL but are these "students" still required to be full time students and remain academically eligible?
It's not that though. It's more that everyone with a functioning brain knew exactly what NIL was going to turn into and why it wasn't worth going down that road.Disagree. This was always going to be a loser in the courts at some point.
No different than a kid creating a phone app and making money while in college.
“NIL makes watching college football less enjoyable” isn’t something to build a legal case around.
A lot of sports need to be eliminated. When do the women sports start demanding a lot of money? How long before D3 athletes start demanding pay for play? High school athletes after that? Colleges and high schools will start eliminating sports and some of these athletes will strictly become students. Shame on those schools and greedy boosters that put winning above what is right.
I remember when I first heard about it and thought, "this is obviously going to be used to buy recruits, that's why its always been against the rules"I remember first hearing about NIL.
I thought, 'it's cool the players will get some extra "beer & pizza" money off jerseys & etc. sale kickbacks'.
To now, where players are raking in multi-million dollar deals - as recruiting pitches!!! - to let businesses use them & their likeness to sell services and products.
This can't be what the original thinking and planning for what NIL would be. It can't be.
This also is removing the desire and need for their futures. Why work to make it to the professional level of the sport you play when you can just as easily get yourself set for life (financially) while still in college??
Oh yeah, they're done. It's just a matter of time. They don't serve a purpose anymore and they're weak leadership is ultimately to blame.I can easily see this being the beginning of the end for the NCAA. The big conferences (SEC & B1G) will grab the big boys, garner the money, and make their own rules.
He who has the money/power makes the rules.
Yeah, especially when they are given money and and an eating plan by the school, gotta eat those 3lb pancheros burritos.I think that it started when the NCAA was worried that a player might get a dollar to buy a burger or soda instead of it going into its pocket.
Have to agree 💯 with you on this one … selling your souls to the devil is never goodThings just got worse today when it comes to NIL and pay to play.
Anything, literally, goes.
He's going to Ohio St. and yes there was tampering with him. Good player but he is either on or off when it comes to shooting. Paris will probably get another guard. and we got a good high school player Eli EllisJust a reminder that ANYTHING goes right now when it comes to the portal and NIL....
Meechie Johnson, South Carolina's leading scorer, entered the transfer portal & it looks like Ohio State is interested.
The 6-2 guard averaged 14.1 PTS, 4.1 REB, and 2.9 AST this season. @pepsicock , have you heard anything? Guessing there's been tampering as well.
Good luck getting that done. Some of CF big boys - that are now in control and getting what they want - will block it. My question ----- how much longer will the CFB players be part of the student body and even attend classes. CF is a TOTAL JOKE right nowTime to take a stand. Disassociate from NCAA, form new division with rules and punishments.
NIL was the devil in enititled clothing, congrats.
I've heard they are already. Bet your bottom dollar they're driving a couple big name school NILs.When will the Saudis start a team and buy up the best players?
They should not be part of the "student" body any longer, they should be employees. Most schools won't hold grades to any standard when the players can just jump ship any time they want.Good luck getting that done. Some of CF big boys - that are now in control and getting what they want - will block it. My question ----- how much longer will the CFB players be part of the student body and even attend classes. well, the NCAA tried to enforce NIL rules when it came to Tennessee but the court ruled that they can't
so, I guess you could say that the change is that we went from some rules that the NCAA tried to make schools abide to (and the NCAA tried to enforce) to no rules/anything literally goes
