This might be a little tougher than Putin thought...

You forgot the Pope. I name dropped him too. Yes I mostly agree with them but I believe what I believe thru my own critical thinking. I might add I was also one of the only voices against the Iraq war too. Everybody says they were now.
You would probably have been in favor of the US pressuring Stalin into negotiating an end of hostilities with Hitler when the Red Army was approaching the Odor River.

woah, thread was at 995 or so just a few days ago and boom blew past the 1000 page mark like nothing.

a couple questions. with putin deploying massive numbers of new untrained conscripts, is there a reason ukraine isn't switching from blowing shit up piecemeal with raids to outright finishing the war (basically get mass surrender from the russians)? get 20-30K to surrender and the world can get back to being normal.
If Ukraine fights Russia using Russian tactics going toe to toe, they will suffer huge losses. They need to continue what they are doing, nibbling beyond the reach of Russian artillery with longer ranged artillery and HIMARS, with precision guided munitions. Once enough nibbling has occurred, like a cavity in the tooth, the integrity of the area is compromised and they can come in and mop up. Once enough of that happens, it will continue to break the will of Russians' will to fight, making gains even easier. So, that is a long way of saying I believe they will stay the course, which has been wildly successful in the past 2 or 3 months.

my take is that ukraine has executed as you posted with great success in recent months which is why there are now masses of ill suited conscripts on the other side. why give them the opportunity to turn into hardened soldiers over time? the longer this goes on greater the potential for the borderlines to start solidifying… i think there’s chance for some shift in tactics.

We all have third-hand information, and are reading the tea leaves a bit, but I think these 700-900 KIA per day numbers we are seeing is largely bunched up conscripts and equipment getting pulverized. Ukraine has shown a deft hand on judging when the enemy is sufficiently battered in an area to come in an mop up. If they see an opening they will take it.

They retracted it because it was a political faux pas.....they signed it and sent it Joe.
They retracted it due to circumstances on the ground changing and realizing it was a mistake.

Meantime, Republicans are actively running on ENDING ALL funding for Ukraine.

The two situations are diametrically opposed, yet you posit them as equivalent. That is objectively false.

Who's running on "ending all ukraine aid" other than greene and other MAGA types? Haven't seen "mainstream" R's run on this. Know for a fact Rubio hasn't been running on this in Florida.

Did Grassley get on a stage with Greene or not? Why is she in Iowa? Why are both Iowa Republican senators seeking to align themselves with her?

Grassley has voted for Ukraine aid when it's come up in the Senate.

MTG is garbage....no argument...but to say the whole party has adopted MTG's platform is a stretch. I have no doubt support for Ukraine will weaken amongst Republicans but I've seen nothing to suggest it vanishes as has been argued. None of the votes support that argument.

Well your strategy of hoping Republicans do the right thing hasn't exactly worked out so well in the past.

I firmly believe your optimism in them is misplaced.

How many civilians were killed before 2014? What changed in 2014?
A coup and a civil war. Ukraine is very divided politically, east to west.. also divided by language, culture and ethnicity. This aspect is deeply rooted and didn't happen over night. It's even part of a trend toward ethnic revival or ethnic nationalism in former soviet union countries but strong in Ukraine. However, there are no other Russian regions like eastern Ukaine and Crimea in the former USSR. I believe when their president got ousted the eastern regions got fed up and demanded independence, rather than being second class citizens. Yes, Russia supported their cause I believe.

Zelensky even ran in 2019 on revising divisive cultural policies in Ukraine, meaning discrimination against Russians and trying to end the Donbas war. He opposed laws against the Russian language and derussification.. his predecessor supported those. His predecessor cut off pensions to the Donbas in 2017 and utilities.

Those Were the Days
In the spring of 2019 a showman converted himself into a politician, then a statesman. The 73 percent of voters who supported him (or who voted against the incumbent, Petro Poroshenko) in the presidential elections had a clear set of change demands: (1) to find a solution to the Donbas war, (2) to rein in the constantly growing prices for communal services unmatched by an equivalent growth in household income, and (3) to revise divisive cultural policies. Even though Zelensky’s platform as candidate was at best hazy, one thing was crystal clear—here was a man who was different in every way from the hungry hordes of the old elites.

When foreign governments get involved in ‘making it stick’ they call it a coup, not a revolution.

See: Operation Ajax
The "foreign government" was Russia, and the "coup" was Putin and his operative Paul Manafort getting Yanukovich to overturn 20 years of Ukrainian plans to join the EU in favor of joining the Russian bloc. No outsiders were needed to get 100k protesters in the streets, and it was Yanukovich ordering his Russian FSB infested Berkut thugs to murder 100 of them that brought out 1,000,000 more. Nor was any interference necessary to get Yanukovich to record a resignation speech and flee to Russia, nor get the Ukrainian legislature to vote 320-0 to remove him from office.

Those ARE the mainstream Rs

They will control the House if they get the majority.
Warned you this would be the case for months on end. You continue to deny it'll happen.

They parrot Kremlin propaganda constantly. Doesn't take a rocket scientist to predict here.

Guess we’ll find out if you were right in a few months. We’ll revisit when the first funding authorization comes down with the new Congress

So we're back to believing campaign talk? About 3 months back when discussing beto, I was told what is said on the campaign trail is hyperbolic and shouldnt be taken literally. When did that change?

Not my party...if I'm wrong and Ukraine aid gets cut off I'll admit as such.

Still plenty of R's that support Ukraine and the votes show that...
JFC...we've covered this.

The Rs currently voting to support aid to Ukraine are doing so because they know the Dems are the majority and will pass the aid bill.

You think if Republicans regain the House that they won't change their view??? McCarthy said as much until he retracted his decree.

We’ll see.

The Russians have lost 278 aircraft in 8 months. Ukraine claims to have killed 74k+ Russians; the Russians claim to have killed 61k Ukraine personnel.
