Story about 40 year old helicopters still plugging away on a daily basis against the Russian lines. Replacements would be nice, as would be some newer stuff…
The US has over 6,000 military helicopters with 700 of them being the current Apaches. I remember the Cobras of which over 1,000 were built. This seems like another case where we could send 100s and never miss them. I'm assume logistics and training is one reason we have not done so.

Counteroffensive starts soon, says Ukrainian ground forces commander

Ukraine’s top ground forces commander, Col Gen Oleksandr Syrskyi, said his forces would soon begin a counter offensive after withstanding Russia’s brutal winter campaign.

He said Russia’s Wagner mercenaries, who have been at the frontline of Moscow’s assault on eastern and southern Ukraine, “are losing considerable strength and are running out of steam”.

“Very soon, we will take advantage of this opportunity, as we did in the past near Kyiv, Kharkiv, Balakliia and Kupiansk,” he said, listing Ukrainian counteroffensives last year that recaptured swathes of land.

It will be interesting how the depleted uranium rounds tilt, or do not tilt, the balance during the upcoming counteroffensive.

Is this the one where they talk about how they are fighting a transparent war making it difficult to coordinate offensives. Also that this may be part of why there has been limited use of manned aircraft.
Yeah...they talk about Ukraines advantage in this realm. Western intelligence/AI.

Some interesting stuff about the Bahkmut battle. Basically there is some dissatisfaction from on the ground Ukrainian commanders around Bahkmut....basically Ukraine is apparently putting in lower grade units to grind the Russians down while they husband their more elite forces for the counter offensive. Talk about the shortage of artillery shells etc...

Pretty smart militarily if true....but understandable why those lesser units taking the brunt in Bahkmut might be a little pissed.

Having said that it actually made me more confident Ukraine can achieve something in their counter offensive if in fact true. If Ukraine is also husbanding ammunition stocks for the offensive this all makes perfect sense...militarily. The ultimate goal is to defeat the Russians.

I think this is just one of those things that war is hell and you end up having to make tough decisions like that.

I mean Churchill in WW2 refused to send out warnings to ships about the position of German Subs for fear that the Germans would realize that their code had been broken.

Not to mention all of the times in history there would be a "rear guard action" which was basically a small group of men standing and fighting a much larger group usually being killed in the process in order for the larger portion of their army to escape.

Sometimes you pretty much have to sacrifice someone to the enemy to win.

Yeah...this was never going to be easy (obviously). Tough decisions have to be made.

Seems like the Ukrainian leadership is keeping their eye on the ball.

The Russians...not so much (fortunately)

Along with Wagner the Russians have thrown in some of their more "elite" units into the Bahkmut fight. If they had any sense they'd be husbanding those to counter the coming spring Ukrainian offensive.

The guy they interviewed posited that the Russian "strategy" is to trade bodies for the Ukrainians depleting their munitions stocks. Hopefully inhibiting the Ukrainians that way....seems crazy.

I think Putin is desperate to prove something so that he can say he's winning.

Progozhin knows which way the wind blows. Better to get out now.

Between what he is saying and the attack in Africa on Chinese mine workers during Xi visit, it sure seems like he is stirring the boiling pot Putin is in.

Question: why do the armed forces of Ukraine announce their plans of an upcoming offensive? Why wouldn’t you just keep it quiet and then surprise the enemy?
Everyone knows it's coming...no secret.

I think the way he worded it would make one think it's going to be in the Bahkmut region. Which makes me think it's going to be somewhere else :)

I think they want the Russians to be focused on Bahkmut.
