This might be a little tougher than Putin thought...

Talking about intel. Maybe it's a case of Russia's intelligence services kind of sucking.

By that I mean they have intelligence assets...satellites, whatever human intel, signals intel and the like. Maybe they really suck at compiling it for actionable intel. My it's a timeliness issue....can't get it to forward units quick enough.

There's also the fact that their leadership probably doesn't want "bad news" so they paint a rosier picture...

Very strange. That and their vaunted cyber capabilities have minimal impact.
As far as cyber goes, a lot of that was done in a nod and wink way with hackers. It gave Russia a shred of deniability to outsource this. My guess is a lot of these guys fled Russia, and the ones left are the Nat Algrens of the litter who aren’t terribly good at their jobs.

They can always try to surrender, and at base their complaint is that their assault orders were “unjustified” in that they were incompetent, not in that they are fighting an unjust war. As far as I am concerned, until they surrender, I hope they get blown up while awaiting competent orders to assault Ukrainians.

There was a story on the CNN website about some guy arrested in either Brazil or the US that was operating as a spy in this country recently.
Had several, relatively close contacts on intel/strategy.

Russian intel has always been robust at the ground level, but the higher up the chain the actionable info goes, it gets lost in the political and bloated bureaucracy, gathering dust in an inbox or rusted file drawer.

How weird would it be if you fled an area, Russians occupied your house, and then you saw a video of it being blown up? I imagine am quite a range of emotions.
We’ve already heard of an instance of a Ukrainian evacuee giving coordinates to his house so that it can be bombed because Russians were using it. Probably half a year ago.

War sucks. It‘d be a lot cooler if Russia would just give up. Until then there will be collateral damage.

Russia's not giving up. I doubt that any of them want to be there, particularly getting slaughtered in an Eastern European winter unequipped. This can only stop by Putin's choice or by somebody removing him from that decision-making authority.

The major cities remain largely unaffected by this war both in terms of material goods and bodies sent to the front lines. Until that changes, this is going to be a budget expense for Russia

The United Kingdom's Defence Ministry says Russia appears to have shifted its operational focus away from the Donbas town of Bakhmut to areas to the north and south.

The ministry's daily report on Saturday says that, with the offensive on Bakhmut itselflooking to have stalled, Russia's forces are redirecting their efforts to Avdiivka, south of Bakhmut, and to the Kremina-Svatove sector in the north.
