AP story delving into Russian combat deaths. Independent groups put the death total at approximately 50,000. Hard to tell. They use models based on various factors, but in what is literally a 3rd world country when it comes to health care, and purposefully misleading data from Russia, it is just an educated guess.

In reading some of the conflict it sounds like politicking. US is advocating for membership for Georgia and Ukraine. France and Germany maybe others are concerned about escalation. Zalensky wants an aggressive timeline. NATO has valid concerns about corruption and the democratic system in Ukraine.
In the end they will need to identify a process. Any sign that they will not receive NATO membership will play into the Russian plan, which is to until the west gets tired of supporting Ukraine or as Putin believes collapses.
