This might be a little tougher than Putin thought...

I'd support sanctions long term but.....like I said. Over time it'll be hard for many countries to keep it up if they're dealing with high energy costs for months on end. That and Ukraine won't always be the flavor of the week....it'll recede to the back burner eventually.

Just reality and has nothing to do with Republicans.

I didn't say it won't be difficult to keep up.

But when Republicans undermine it for political gain, it will be even harder if moderates/independents don't call them out on it.

I would as well....trouble is domestic politics will probably weaken the will on these sanctions over time...

Ukraine is very high on the priority list NOW....couple years down the road? Everybody is still going to need natural gas/oil. Not sure long term higher energy costs will be sustainable long term politically for a lot of countries.
This reinforces the need to reduce petro usage.

It is so obvious.

Gold.
Thanks

You're welcome.

I'll clarify: the context here is CURRENT energy spikes, created by the lack of Russian petro on the markets.

Claiming it has to do with "US leases" is silliness, because there are ample leases untapped and which weren't going to be tapped because prices were too low to support them.

And they cannot be tapped quickly enough to respond to the spikes of the past 1-2 months.

Prices were rising before the war.

According to Oil experts.... the production is down because the Oil Companies need to spend billions to get these areas up and running and they don't trust the government to follow thru with leaving them alone to drill. They worry about policy changes. That's why the whole environment changed after the 2020 election.

"Why are gas prices so high?

Oil prices have been rallying for months as the global economy rebounded from a pandemic-induced slowdown.

Petroleum refiners that had reduced output as the economy slowed haven’t ramped back up to pre-pandemic levels. The market has lost about one million barrels of daily petroleum-refining capacity since early 2020, when the U.S. was producing about 19 million barrels of refined petroleum a day.

Events in Ukraine have caused oil prices to skyrocket, pouring gasoline on what was already a smoldering fire. Brent crude topped $130 a barrel in early March, and gasoline prices recently hit $4.305 a gallon, according to AAA."

If I had any 'faith' in Russian military strategy, I would think that those could be double-agents/saboteurs, but I feel pretty confident that they just want out of Russian army.
Yeah, I don't think I could trust them with my best weapons.

It can only happen so fast....unfortunately a country like Germany got ahead of their ski's by closing their nuclear plants which at one time provided 28% of their energy and all the windmills that litter the German landscape didn't pick up the slack and they're reliant on Russian oil and gas....

We'll get there, but we're going to need natural gas and oil for the forseeable future.

That is the last straw. Norilsk must get at least 4-5 tourists per year!

While your last sentence is true, it is also true that the faster we wean ourselves from oil dependence, the sooner kleptocracies like Russia and Saudi Arabia are weakened, and thus, less threat to global economy and order.

It is imperative to not let the fossil fuel industries here try to use the Ukrainian/Russian war as a bullshit excuse to not continue our switch from fossil fuels to renewables. In fact, that effort should accelerate.

I agree.....I also don't have a problem with the US increasing natural gas production to lesson Russian leverage on that front.

Definitely a balancing act....

When I was in Germany it was readily apparent they knew they screwed up being so reliant on Russian oil and gas. It was a common refrain from their politicians and pundits....they also wish they hadn't closed their nuclear plants until they could pick up the slack.

This Ukraine thing has been a sea change for the Germans...increased their defense spending considerably.

Oil drilling and production is actually increasing so enough with the nonsense.

After we wean ourselves of of oil...... Will we be fighting wars over Lithium?
Luckily Li deposits are pretty diverse. Alot comes from Australia, but you also have China and South American countries thrown in.

Li isn't our biggest concern when talking about "rare earth" elements. Things like cobalt and neodymium is where things are going to get ugly.

Interesting stor
Probably because it is full of humanitarian aid and medicine, and not weapons/ammo, in terms of secondary explosions.
I get that, and it's a good point. But, that seems to make it more likely that the Russians would pound it into dust. One to destroy it, and two as a psychological warfare move. A move to show just how brutal they can be, and how there is no hope.

If only we'd used the last 50 years or so to start moving away from gas and oil...
