This might be a little tougher than Putin thought...

It's parody for sure-but the fact people think he really could say it tells you everything.
yeah, it's a plausibility reinforced from both ends -- not only that tucker might say something this (personally, I've not seen that hack in the better part of a decade), but also that the internet twitterati would spend its waking hours obsessing over the fact that he said it.

This is alarming. Was Merkel compromised (Kompromat) by the Kremlin?

JFC

Merkel and Sarkozy. I seem to remember reading that Sarkozy had accepted a lot of Russian cash. Merkel did more than a few deals with Russia. Looking back, Merkel certainly seems to have been looking out for Russia's interests internationally.

Update - Sarkozy was convicted of taking bribes from Libya and has been criticized for a large deal with Russia. It is likely he was compromised.

Germany agonises over Merkel’s legacy: did she hand too much power to Putin?

Sarkozy

of course I do. The national policy wasn’t indiscriminate bombing, mass graves, looting all supported by civilians at home. I know our hands aren’t clean but last I checked our military adheres to a rules of engagement that is to minimize civilian casualties.

And it’s quite one thing to be crass and cavalier on message boards and with your buddies, these are videotaped opinions for the world to see.

I've heard more than a few advocate for such things in the past. More recently, some savor for civil war in this country so that "the left" can be dealt with. I saw a post stating as much on this board on Saturday night.

One other thing about our recent past wars, Bush and Cheney, along with a few others, should have been turned over to international authorities and tried for war crimes.

depressing. Early on I thought the Russians citizens would force putins hand. In particular I thought young Russians would have better access to information. Videos can’t speak for a nation but the definitely don’t give much hope that this conflict will end soon. More importantly and depressing is the genera attitude towards ukraine. This is thinking from generations ago, or at least I thought it was.

The people whom you were correctly counting on to oppose Putin, most of them fled the country. It is mostly uneducated, brainwashed, dumbasses who remain.

So I took my wife to the ballet on Saturday night at the Kennedy Center -- it was Don Quixote, which ironically enough, I first saw in Moscow in 1985. Principal ballerina dancing the lead role was Ukrainian. Before the show, one of the principal dancers who had the night off came out and asked us all to stand as the orchestra played the Ukrainian national anthem. Quite moving indeed.

Funny how high culture can sometimes provide some extraordinary moments -- first opera I ever saw was Beethoven's Fidelio, an opera about liberation, performed by the Polish National Opera at the Bolshoi, again, in 1985.

This is why dictators jail or kill artists, almost ahead of everyone else like journalists and political activists, when taking power or conquering a new land. They don't want anyone inspiring an opposition.

Weeeellll, in 1985, it was the dictators who seemed to let the Poles do their thing. Just sayin'.

Notice that I said when taking power or first conquering a new land. 1985 was at the tail end of the Soviet run. Fortunately for Poland, their minders had gotten lazy. It also didn't hurt that their one time Catholic Archbishop was elevated to Pope a few years earlier. JPII along with Reagan and Thatcher were a determined force in ending the Soviet Union. As I write this, I am reminded that they almost succeeded in assassinating the Pope. Like I said, dictators like to eliminate those who inspire opposition.

I agree. I just don't like the fact that China/India are basically Russia's fall back....we can hurt Russia and are hurting the Russians but those countries are gonna soften the landing.

Seems in the current climate countries like Germany are getting more grief "for not doing enough" than China/India as they just sit off to the side and basically don't get the "grief" they should be getting IMO.
India must pay bigly.

All that may be true but a smaller front also means greater troop density and more importantly....Artillery density. Since the Russians have found out they suck...I'd expect them to rely on Artillery to obliterate area's and make incremental advances WW1 style....a destructive slog.
That works both ways.

If someone like Tucker supported overt genocide, I'd expect the internet to keep that front and center. Wouldn't you?
Whatever blows your hair back dude.

Personally, my priority right now is on Ukrainians, rather than political screeds against domestic TV talking head hacks.

I'm continually amazed at how Zelenskyy seems to put out these all-timer speeches almost daily while running a war campaign. There is not a more effective leader. It's about damn time the U.S. had Gen X or millennial president.
No offense, you don't just find somebody like Zelensky. He is acting like a human, while helping command his troops and eloquently pushing other countries to assist his country with throwing enough shade to put pressure on without going to far overboard. He has essentially captured lightning in a bottle. Down the road I am sure he will do something to taint his reputation, you can't be this spot on forever, but damn he has done as fine a job as anyone could have expected.

Existential threats have a way of focusing the mind.

Churchill was considered a bit of a buffoon prior to WWII breaking out, but he rose to the occasion. I think we are seeing a similar dynamic at play here.
