This might be a little tougher than Putin thought...

Part of the food issues will be from lack of good harvests as well. Supposedly, Russia is the largest producer of fertilizer. Sanctions will not allow that fertilizer to be sold worldwide which will create an even bigger food shortage and will sour many countries on Russian sanctions. What’s more important when hungry? Russian sanctions or eating? Things are going to get even nuttier in the next year or so.
Fertilizer is exempted.

Too bad Ukraine didn't have these at the start of the war

Trivia - The famous Swiss Oerlikon 20mm anti aircraft gun was used by both the Axis and Allies in WW2, usually mounted on warships.

I know this is a radical idea, but what if some of the best farmland in the world (in Iowa and the Midwest) was used to efficiently grow food for humans?

Human suffering obviously takes precedence but how sad is this...

According to the charity UAnimals, the shelter's 485 dogs remained locked in their cages from the beginning of the war in late February until the beginning of April, after Russian soldiers left Borodyanka and charity volunteers were able to return to the shelter. During that time, the dogs were left without any food or water, the charity said. By the time the volunteers finally gained access to the building on April 1, all but 150 of the 485 animals had died.

Lavish parties, junkets, hookers, blow.
Weird

I thought FDR was a Democrat
All of those good conservatives elected FDR 4 times.

Yep, hearing about all this makes me about want to puke. I would support military action against Russia….the world said never again nearly 80 years ago…not never again unless the other side could threaten OUR homes….then go ahead and carry on….
Two words...Nuclear Weapons.

That reality changes calculations...

Is Zelensky/Ukr considering giving Russia land in Ukraine as a concession for Putin to stop the war? Thought I saw this mentioned in the thread but skimmed it quick and haven't seen anything else on this.

Thanks

In recent days, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky walked the first steps toward peace by announcing his openness to making several concessions to Russian demands. These include a commitment to Ukrainian neutrality with respect to military alliances, a rejection of any nuclear arsenal, and an acceptance of Russian control over Ukraine’s eastern regions. He even indicated a readiness to change language policies that had disadvantaged Russian speakers.

so why would that calculus suddenly change if Putin does the same thing to Poland or the baltics?
Clearly defined red line, NATO treaty obligations....that's why Putin has avoided attacking NATO countries. He knows exactly what the response will be.

If we didn't want him to attack Ukraine NATO/US should have let Ukraine in or given security guarantees BEFORE he invaded. We us/nato made it abundantly clear we WOULD NOT get involved militarily in Ukraine.

This was before the Bucha and other war crimes were uncovered, right? I hope he walks this back - at least from where I sit I would. Can't concede to a murderous criminal imo.

NATO treaty does not require defense of member states. Article V says that each member state may respond by taking the actions we deem necessary….we could respond by a strongly worded message and flipping Putin off and still fulfill our obligations
