For example, even when Iowa gets horses to transfer (Eierman, Woods, Teemer, Parco, etc.) they tend to regress; not progress.

So many Iowa wrestlers are banged up, sidelined, wrapped up, etc.

Iowa wrestlers do not wrestle freely, with purpose, for the full seven minutes.

Iowa wrestlers cannot keep up with the pace of Penn St. wrestlers.

I don't think getting more NIL money, better facilities, sellout meets, etc. will make a dent in the problem.

Iowa has a handful of NCAA champions in the last 10 years ... Penn St. gets 3-4, so it seems, every year.

Brands has had plenty of time prove if he can compete with Cael. Apart from a few years of success, it's been an uphill battle.

Sure, Iowa is ranked #2, but they might as well be #22 as far as the distance between the programs.

I know this might sound like a long shot, but what if Iowa gave Ben Askren a call and gave him the reins? Askren has a guaranteed pipeline to top talent and that's what Iowa needs, along with the fact that Ben gets that Iowa way underperforms, and that Iowa is a sleeping giant.

I get tired of the same old "we gotta be ready", "we gotta get to our shots" etc, but it doesn't happen.

Last night most of our guys looked scared, they looked intimidated and they were merely in survival mode. PSU guys all looked like they had no doubt they would win minus the guy at 133.

You do realize no one else is competing with Carl right now either right? This isn't just an Iowa thing. If the answer was so easy, why hasn't literally anyone else in the country figured it out yet!? Iowa lost 30-8 and is very likely the second best (3rd at worst) team in the country. That says a lot more about Penn St. than it does about Iowa.

This. My casual basketball/football hawks fan asked me the same thing if Brands needs to go. No one else is closer than Brands at PSU. Not saying we're closing the gap right now but...

That's an obvious take but it still remains that Iowa needs to rethink about who leads the program and at least fix the regressing, injuries, and getting more blue chip recruits.

It can't hurt to TRY to fix things (even if other programs are also behind)

Penn St. has 7 wrestlers in the top 3 all 10 in the top 10. This team is likely to break the scoring record for a 2nd year in a row. Nobody likes to lose but let’s have some perspective, any dual team going against Penn St. is getting demolished.

Sigh ... this is why I don't much hope in Iowa being competitive anytime soon. Too many are resigned to being #2. But if Iowa becomes #3, #4, etc, then we will demand change? To get back to the top losing team behind Cael?

Last time i looked they had 6 in P4P too

Yep and so let's accept fate and just lose for the next 20 years. If that's what folks are ok with, then we can't complain when the gap becomes wider and wider ... and then ....

Cael and Penn St will make everyone forget about Iowa and Gable. It's so sad to see Iowa bring out guys from the 70s at half time to talk about the good ol' days.

Agree with you. By no means supporting complacency. Just thru a stat out you dont see to often.

Im a hawk fan but enjoy watching programs elevate past all others regardless the sport. History tells us others including iowa with finally adjust and catch.

It all comes down to recruiting — they have a whole team made up of high school world team members. You don’t have to coach these kids, just put them in a room together. Iowa needs to grab 4-5 kids in this 26 class and turn the tide.

But, for the love of God, can we save the same dialogue every year — this change will take time. Keuter, Arnold, Ferrari, DeLuca, and Ludington are a step in the right direction. We need to build on it with 4-5 more hammers.

Get rid of Telford first and bring in a young coach that these kids can relate too — Marsteller, Burroughs, Nolf and/or Spencer Lee.

FWIW, I feel like Iowa has had damn good upper weights for a squad coached by a couple of 134ish pounders. Maybe Telford as the recruiting coordinator for all weights isn’t perfect, but he has done a good a damn good job in the upper weights.

I accept that there are only 2 guys right now that I would want other than Tom Brands; One just took the Okie job and the other is still competing.

I also accept that it may be 4 years minimum before we make a change. Hopefully Spencer Lee wants the job and is capable of taking over one of the 3 premier programs in wrestling.

Hard to complete when that team is all juiced up.

Iowa needs a technician at the upper weights and someone with a "wow" factor. Doing the same thing year after year after year and hoping for a different outcome is insanity. Dake is my choice.

I love the Iowa is so far behind PSU, therefor Iowa must be bad logic…

This Iowa team is actually REALLY good. Mind you, up until the last couple of seasons PSU was actually winning titles with very similar lineups. 4-5 hammers, 2-4 AA types and 1-2 actual holes in the lineup.

Iowa has hammers at 133, 149, 157, 165 and 197. They have solid AA types at 174, 184(Arnold could make the finals) and 285. 125 and 141 are admittedly, at best, 1-2 at NCAA’s, if they get there….

That isn’t remotely a team you call the coaches out for. In fact, in many years they would get praised. It is just painstakingly simple. PSU has become a powerhouse at an unprecedented level. You can hate it all you want and want to still beat them as much as anyone possibly could, but blaming the Brands because the gap is so wide is comically misplaced…

We need a new assistant coach, you know his name. 🤣🤣

@Gobblin you don't think he's a threat in the immediate future?
Not near the threat many portray. If you think he will be Sanderson level, while Sanderson is still fully invested, you are delusional. Now, will he get them back to a team Iowa truly has to contend with? Sure.

I could see Taylor going on a run similar to what Ryan had at his best, but anything above that would take him literally stealing recruits from PSU and I just don’t see anyone doing that any time soon….

A “threat”? Sure…. But to proclaim he’s gonna “take us out” is absurd. The good is hardly relatable to today’s athletes. He’ll be competitive simply because of the $ backing him. Nothing more.
The "David Taylor" brand is itself an attractant. The young wrestlers are impressed with him.

Who did he learn from? Who do you think he's emulating? He has more cred than Cael when he started coaching.

Exactly, Taylor is going to take us out soon too. He's building as we speak.
Okie State will have a lot of freshman next year. It’s still too early to tell how Taylor is doing. This team was inherited. They are being carried by their transfers this year — Fish, Amine, Hamiti and Hendrickson. None of their team has developed much and, some would argue, they have regressed - Spratley, Hughes and Tegan.

Next year their freshman will take their lumps minus Lockett so we will see if he is closing the gap or not.

Our fans suck.
We don't suck, Gobblin. And I like most don't think it's about replacing Tom. But if we don't tweak things a bit we're not going to get back to the top. 2nd place isn't bad, but when you are in the house that Gable built you're not Ok with 2nd place. And you're definitely not OK with getting your ass kicked by more than 20 points two years in a row to PSU. We're great fans who want more from our program! :)

Exactly, anointing Taylor king before he has accomplished anything as a coach is stupid. Maybe he will succeed, maybe he won't. Time will tell. Too say he will dethrone Carl in a year or two is ridiculous. It won't happen. Even with the transfers this year I don't see them finishing ahead of Iowa with a whole season for the staff to coach everyone up.

By the transfers in, you can already see his appeal.

I think the best path is probably Tom through the remainder of his contract, followed by Spencer (if he is ready).

No one said Cael, I was talking about the Hawks. All I said was he's a legit threat and building. Near future he's a big threat to us imo.
Didn't mean to include Tarps post.

psu is in a league of 1
Of course every other team, Iowa included, is trying to get better and catch them. And just because they are failing now doesn't mean they aren't trying.
If there's someone out there now with the recipe, then by all means replace Brands. I don't happen to think there is.

What does Morningstar bring to the room? Ive heard a handful of folks say he’s worthless and while I enjoy wrestling, I don’t consider myself anywhere near knowledgeable enough about coaching to really form an opinion
