TONIGHT!: Soccer Sweet 16 Sunday: 8 PM on ESPN+: 3 Iowa vs 7 VA Tech

Missouri State scores after a miscommunication between Enneking and defenders as she came out and got caught out when a defender attempted to clear. 2-1.

Sofia Bush JUST over the bar top corner…ugh. 8:50 left as they have a video review? No. Refs have an audio equipment change. Long stoppage but about to be game on. Insane it’s nervy, because it’s a 27-6 advantage on shots for Iowa.

This group has some talent but need to put the ball in the net more. Dominated this game but it was waaayyy to close when it shouldn’t have been. We lose a lot off this team. I thought I heard two coming in next year are studs. If only 2 I assume we will see a couple of portal additions that can help right away.

Two Canadian studs from MLS academy teams incoming, after landing two five stars last year. And yes, Dillani has thrived on transfers. The second assist was Lauren Geczik, a Texas A&M grad transfer.

EDIT: The biggest get may be Liana Tarasco, attacking midfielder who has five goals in seven appearances with the Canada U-17 national team.

Welp. Kids soccer schedule meant we missed this one also. Any insights into the next game time/date?

UCLA and Cal Baptist are in OT. Could be notable...
Right before UCLA scored in the second OT period, I read Iowa would have hosted the second round if the Bruins lost. Instead they have to face either Georgetown or Fairfield out in neutral LA in preparation for potentially facing them in the Soccer Sixteen.

B1G went 6-0 tonight despite nervy games for UCLA, Iowa, Washington, and Wisconsin. Upsets were 7 seed Georgia (who knocked Iowa out of the second round last year) losing to Colorado, recent finalists BYU also out as a 7 seed to Santa Clara, and 8 seed Utah State going out to Washington in PKs in a scoreless match (Iowa can relate to the Aggies on that one. This is the Huskies tournament M.O.).

Awesome! Thanks for the update. The next round on actual tv?
Last year we got on TV in the second round because we faced a fellow major conference tournament champ in Georgia, and SEC Network picked it up. I doubt Georgetown would have that type of pull for TV to cover it, but we shall see.

Is there a contract for this or is it "Whichever network wants to televise this, give us a call?"

It’s an ESPN contract. Everything goes through them and it gives ESPN+ the exclusive streaming rights. The SEC Network is an ESPN property, hence why we were on it with Georgia last year. BTN has been known to pick up the rights of B1G schools hosting other big Power 5 schools too, to fill a time slot. I guess being at UCLA as a neutral host site next round would qualify for that now. If it’s Georgetown MAYBE that happens, but it’s long shot. More likely we have to make do with ESPN+ at least another round. If we face UCLA in the Soccer Sweet 16, that has a good chance of making BTN or ESPNU.

I understand the angst about streaming services and the incremental costs that build. However, I’m surprised that people don’t have the ESPN/Disney/Hulu bundle. Since I enjoy watching college soccer across both genders - as well as watching the occasional small format college football (like Drake) - it’s an easy investment for me.

Agreed. There’s so much I watch on Hulu/ESPN+: Bundesliga, FA Cup, Dutch Eredivisie, Drake football, Waterloo Bucks/Northwoods League, Super Rugby Americas, college soccer, college hockey, college wrestling, college softball, college baseball, and college rugby. And I catch multiple Iowa away games in pretty much all of those that they play.

Case in point: Drake plays Morehead State at 12 today. Who doesn’t want to tune in to watch Morehead?

I'm old enough to remember when everyone was "getting ripped off" by a cable bill for all the sports channels....

...now they just split everything up into a half dozen or more streaming services that you need to pay about twice as much when your team's seasons are split up among all of them....

Peacock
ESPN+
Big10+
FloHoops
Amazon Prime Video
Youtube

etc etc etc...
