TONIGHT!: Soccer Sweet 16 Sunday: 8 PM on ESPN+: 3 Iowa vs 7 VA Tech

Hawks looked like the better team, but nothing too threatening by either team.

Soccer Sweet Sixteen first timers! Dillani’s Hawkeyes play to seed again, but this time past Round 2. Probably a rematch with UCLA for the first time since these Seniors were the Fabulous Freshmen B1G Champs, and nearly upset the Bruins in the second round of the big dance. Ingles becomes the Hawkeyes all-time NCAA Tournament top scorer.

B1G women are absolutely rolling in the NCAAs. 5-1 so far in the Round of 32. Two upsets with MSU beating Texas and Minnesota over South Carolina. Only loss was Washington going down to #1 seed Mississippi State, 1-0. Makes the Hawks two B1G Tourney titles and a regular season runner up finish all this decade so far even more impressive.

I know it likely won't matter, but can they stop giving the College Cup to Cary, NC. Seems like they host every year
I used to love when it was in Richmond every year. Really cool venue, and really raucous crowds. WakeMed isn't nearly as cool or intense. Santa Barbara was the best venue in recent years. Harder Stadium is a madhouse, and they regularly pull in near-10k for UCSB. I think the College Cup Final there had 15k.

WakeMed seems like a typical suburban stadium with 20 soccer fields surrounding it for youth soccer. At least it looks like next year it will be at CPKC Stadium before moving back to Cary again

Both of my daughter's clubs play in a big soccer showcase in Raleigh that weekend. We usually are able to attend the semi-final games.

Saw FSU last year...damn they were good.

Hoping the Hawks make it :)

7 Big Ten teams in the Sweet 16. If you are in the top half of the Big Ten, you are in the Sweet 16. Except UCLA.

Believe us, FSU has voiced this opinion for decades. If you take a deep dig into all of the North Carolina natties, you realize how many were played instate.
The other side of the coin is that few facilities exist that can host and produce crowds.
FSU has been pretty successful there recently…

Pulling skrong for the Hawks.
I had picked a few upsets… Santa Clara over UNC. Nope. VaTech over UCLA. Yep.
Did not see Vandy taking down the Noles. Dang.
Thanks. VA Tech is the real deal. UCLA did not look good in barely surviving Cal-Baptist in double-OT. Guess it wasn’t a hiccup. Sunday should be fascinating.

If this game were to be played at Iowa...

I bet we would get 5k. Hills packed on both sides.

Can we please get a men's team while we are at all this success?

Which begs the question: If we win and Sparty upsets Duke, would we host with a trip to College Cup weekend on the line? That would be an epic event.

Would the NCAA put that on Friday night next week? They surely wouldn't do that... right?

Looks like two of the Elite Eight games will be Friday night and two will be Saturday. No idea how they choose. Hopefully it’s the Hawks that have to worry about that, and not the Hokies.

That’s pretty impressive. Is the B1G always the dominant conference in women’s soccer?

ESPN+ again for the game?
No, the B1G has never been this dominant. Penn State has been to multiple College Cups and won it all a few years ago. Beyond that, only Wisconsin has made a title game in women’s soccer. The league has come on strong about the same years Iowa has. Traditionally it’s the coasts, the ACC and PAC 12. Speaking of, there’s a small chance that the game Sunday gets picked up by the ACC Network, but it will be streaming on ESPN+ regardless.

I do think one of the reasons they get crowds is the massive girls soccer recruiting event in town that weekend. It's good for coaches as there is a combine and a chance to see a lot of players. All total, thousands of girls and parents and in town and it's a great team activity for the whole crew to go to the semi-final games.
