Former President Trump is challenging the $364 million fine a New York judge handed down for his company's fraudulent business practices, multiple outlets reported.

Why it matters: In legal filings Monday, the former president formally signaled his intent to appeal New York Judge Arthur Engoron's ruling, which will trigger a lengthy process that will likely delay its enforcement.

Catch up quick: In addition to the $364 million in penalties, Engoron also barred Trump from running a business as an officer or director in New York for three years.

  • Trump told reporters at the time of the ruling that he'd appeal the decision, and "if we're not successful, New York State is gone."
Background: Engoron found Trump liable for financial fraud in September. The January trial was to determine what penalties the former president and his business empire would face.

  • New York Attorney General Letitia James sought a $370 million penalty from Trump for allegedly committing decades of financial fraud.
  • She also wanted to bar Trump and his two sons from being able to do business in New York ever again.

So how much have you contributed to the Dear Leader's legal defense fund, I mean campaign Rico?

He will get off easy on this clear 8th Amendment violation

That's why it will eventually end up in the Supreme Court if New York doesn't fix its own mess.

Why is it a "clear" 8A violation? Guy made millions, while fudging numbers by millions over many years. Millions in penalties doesn't seem like an unfair judgement.

It's not like the state of NY just pulled some huge number out of the air to throw at the judge for a penalty. I'm fairly certain there was some reasonable calculations involved to come up with the amount they were asking.

It will be interesting to see if Trump can get a bond, that is a large amount of money to guarantee.

While I despise Trump, I do hope he wins this appeal. The banks are responsible for who they lend money to, and if they felt the documentation provided was enough to make lending decisions, then the state should not become involved in a private business matter.

So he won't get off. Nobody is really disputing that he lied. The conversation will revolve around the appropriate damages.
