From the transcript of Trump's interview with Time magazine:

If the prices of groceries don't come down, will your presidency be a failure?

"I don't think so. Look, they got them up. I'd like to bring them down. It's hard to bring things down once they're up. You know, it's very hard. But I think that they will. I think that energy is going to bring them down. I think a better supply chain is going to bring them down. You know, the supply chain is still broken. It's broken. You see it. You go out to the docks and you see all these containers. And I own property in California, in Palos Verdes. They're very nice. And I passed the docks, and I've been doing it for 20 years. I've never seen anything like it. You know, for 17 years, I saw containers and, you know, they'd come off and they'd be taken away—big areas, you know, you know, in that area, you know, where they have the big, the big ships coming in—big, the port. And I'd see this for years as I was out there inspecting property and things, because they own a lot in California. And I look down and I see containers that are, that are 12, 13, 14 containers. You wouldn't believe they can hold each other. It's like crazy. No, the supply chain is is broken. I think a very bad thing is this, what they're doing with the cars. I think they lost also because of cars. You know, there are a lot of reasons, but the car mandate is a disaster. The electric, the EV mandate."

August 20, 2024:

“Prices will come down,” Trump told voters during a speech last week laying out his vision for a return to the White House. “You just watch: They’ll come down, and they’ll come down fast, not only with insurance, with everything.”

Now: “You know it’s very hard”

He MUST be held accountable to his fools gold campaign promises.

Duh……Really?
I knew that and I never went to an expensive eastern business college!
(But facts never make good campaign rhetoric)

So now we have people upset that he's not lying? I think he's just trying to be honest, and I do think he thinks that fixing supply chain issues and lowering energy costs will have far reaching effects on prices.

That's why you don't have a small college town mayor in charge of transportation.

Energy cost will be the number one mover and driver of bringing the economy back around.

I expect Trump's inflation on food prices to be less than Biden's.

I actually kind of missed the divergent rambling - 'weave' - type stream of consciousness that only Trump can do and get away with. Amusing in a 'can you believe this?' sort of way, disappointing for our country in a 'can you believe this?' sort of way, and also hilarious in a 'can you believe the MAGAs think he's a genius and the non-MAGAs will defend it' sort of way.

Will certainly be an entertaining term.

So once again we libs were right that Republicans like Iowa's MMM were running on a BS narrative, that Biden and Democrats caused prices to rise, that Republicans will never ever attempt to fix, in order to help everyday Americans, and this BS was accepted as fact. It's always so easy to point this out but right wingers refuse to acknowledge it. We all KNEW Trump wasn't going to lower costs...because he can't.

I'm sure THIS is the lie that will turn his base from him.

So now we believe the president DOES control prices?

No. Your poor comprehension is failing you again.

- Trump and MAGA blame Biden for higher prices
- Trump says he can fix it
- Trump now says it is very hard (hedging or backpedaling, whichever is easier for you to understand)
- Non-MAGAs laugh at the predictability of this series of events and gullibility of MAGAs who they assume fall for everything Trump says
- MAGAs mount their best defense and will be mocked as well

No one now believes the president does control prices.

This is at least the third time this concept has been explained to them, but like so many other simple explanations, this probably won't sink in. They think we're serious when we bring it up.

I have come around to the idea that these people aren't totally dumb, but rather they are just dedicated liars and manipulators. They have traits similar to low level management in strict religious cults.

Remember when the right criticized Kamala for "word salads"? JFC, we're living in the dumbest possible simulation.

Trump is a genius at spin. Whatever he does, he spins into something positive.

Intellectually, I think he's a dunce. He's never read a book in his adult life. He doesn't know any details but he's amazing at spin.

You should read the full transcript. We hear Trump talk and you know he's a moron, but when you actually see the words written out, it's somehow even more stupid. I mean, look at this one sentence:

"You know, for 17 years, I saw containers and, you know, they'd come off and they'd be taken away—big areas, you know, you know, in that area, you know, where they have the big, the big ships coming in—big, the port."

His presidency is already a huge success. Just ask his supporters on this board.

I’m gonna use this thread to share an observation I made over Thanksgiving.

I was visiting family in Minneapolis, and I went to a grocery store to grab some things. This was in an upscale neighborhood not far from the university. I was surprised to see the prices weren’t any higher than my small town Walmart and Fareway. Some things were actually cheaper. I am not sure urban and suburban people are experiencing the changes in cost of living in the same way as rural people. It used to be that those of us in the hinterlands suffered lower wages, but it was offset by a lower cost of living. Is that going away?

So now we believe the president DOES control prices?
No, however one of the central tenets of Trump's campaign was that they do, and that he WILL lower them if elected. Smart people always knew that this was a lie and that the president has very limited (if any) control over grocery prices, however exit polls, surveys and focus groups indicated that amongst Trump voters lowering grocery prices was commonly sighted as one of the top reasons for voting for Trump.

The point is, he lied to fool stupid people into voting for him, he knew damn well he was lying, and now he is backpedaling to try to cover up his lie. Not surprised that this needed to be explained to you, btw.
